Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet
Sweden
Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and aquatic ecotoxicology. The department has some 150 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff. For more information about the department visit: www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences Read more about our benefits and what it is like to work at SLU at https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/ Exploring the Role of Pharmaceuticals on Antimicrobial Resistance in the Environment Research subject: Environmental assessment with specialisation in environmental chemistry Description: Antimicrobial resistance poses health risks to humans and our environment. Unlike classical antimicrobials (e.g., antibacterials), knowledge on the impact of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals in the development and dissemination of resistance remains largely lacking. Non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals account for a large proportion of the drug market worldwide. Many of them are often present in natural and engineered environmental systems (e.g., surface water, municipal wastewater) with preserved biological activity that may act as selective pressure. To date, little is known about the role and risk of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals in promoting and spreading antimicrobial resistance in the environment. We are seeking for a doctoral student who will (i) characterise and meta-analyse non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals as antimicrobials in the environment, (ii) carry out field studies and laboratory experiments, (iii) perform quantitative and semi-quantitative chemical analysis of water samples, (iv) assess the impact of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals on the resistance proliferation and dissemination in environmental water systems, and (v) identify related influencing factors and potential indicator substances for resistance. The duties also include big data analysis and processing, statistical evaluation, writing scientific manuscripts in English, and disseminating the results. Qualifications: Applicants shall hold a MSc in Environmental Organic Chemistry, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or equivalent. Specialisation towards antimicrobial resistance and organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment are valuable merits. Data processing skills using statistical computing tools and graphics, e.g. R, MATLAB, is highly desirable. Previous experience with trace analysis of organic chemicals, e.g., pharmaceuticals, in environmental matrices, elucidation of chemical structures based on mass spectra, and the use of liquid-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry for data acquisition and quantification are of high merits too. High emphasis is also placed on personal characteristics, such as interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required, and knowledge of Swedish is also an advantage. Place of work: Uppsala Forms for funding or employment: Employment (4 years) Scope: 100% Starting date: According to agreement. Application: Click the “Apply” button to submit your application. The deadline is 2026-05-17. The application should include i) your CV, ii) a short description of your experience demonstrating your suitability for the position, iii) copies of higher education diplomas, iv) contact information of at least two reference persons, and v) preferably also a written reference letter from at least one reference person. To qualify for third-cycle (Doctoral) courses and study programmes, you must have a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification. Alternatively, you must have conducted a minimum of four years of full-time study, of which a minimum of one year at second-cycle level. Applicants will be selected based on their written application and CV, degree project, copies of their degree certificate and transcript of records from previous first and second-cycle studies at a university or higher education institution, two personal references, and knowledge of English. More information about the English language requirements can be found here: https://www.slu.se/en/education/programmes-courses/doctoral-studies/application-admission-doctoral-studies/ Please note that applicants invited to interview must submit attested copies of their degree certificate, or equivalent, a transcript of records from previous first and second-cycle studies at a university or higher education institution. Applicants who are not Swedish citizens need to submit an attested copy of their passport’s information page containing their photograph and personal details. Postdoc in Data-driven methods for remote sensing
Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB
Sweden
Join and help us to derive global forest biomass data from the European Space Agency’s Biomass satellite mission. If you have interests in remote sensing, machine learning and forests, this is the post-doc position for you! About us The Department of Space, Earth and Environment brings together expertise in space, geoscience, energy and sustainability. Through curiosity-driven research, education and collaboration, we explore the Universe, the Earth and the complex systems linking environment, energy and society – enabling knowledge-based solutions for a sustainable future. At the Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, we develop advanced methods and instruments to observe and understand the Earth system. Combining satellite, airborne and ground-based measurements with modelling and machine learning, we collaborate globally to monitor environmental change and support a sustainable future. About the research project  The Biomass satellite carrying the ground-breaking P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) was launched on 29 April 2025 and recently finished its commissioning phase. This 5-year ESA Earth Explorer mission will produce much-needed global forest biomass data using its polarimetric and tomographic radar capabilities. Our team is responsible for the algorithms which derive the biomass data product. The post-doc project is about extending the biomass algorithm to also include data-driven, machine learning approaches. The biomass data product will be validated by data from an international network of ground-truth forest sites (GEO-TREES, geo-trees.org). The developed algorithms thus extend and complement the current generation of the biomass data product. A large-scale training data set will be generated for the biomass algorithm. The training data will be based on other remote sensing data which estimate forest biomass, e.g. from airborne and spaceborne laser scanners, since no in-situ based biomass data with global coverage exist.
