Scope and Practicalities of the research education
K3’s PhD education prepares you for a career in research or teaching in academia, as well as cultivating scope for advanced professional work outside of the academic field. The goals of meaningful collaboration with other researchers, and the development of regional, national and international networks fostered by the PhD processes would support both career directions. With relevance to this PhD position, we are consolidating existing research platforms at Malmö University such as Medea and are devoting considerable energy toward the establishment of substantial new research programmes, like the Data Society Research Programme, and research platforms such as Collaborative Future Making and Rethinking Democracy.
More formally stated, and in line with the General Study Plan for third-cycle programme in Media and Communication Studies, the aim of the PhD programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for a PhD student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the chosen subject area. The PhD programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is completed when the PhD student publicly defends his/her dissertation. The four years of PhD education can be extended in case of, for example, teaching commitments.
Aims of the Media and Communication programme include: the experience of collaboration with other researchers, critical and scholarly engagement with both traditional and/or contemporary discourses in the field of Media and Communication, and establishing a national and international contact network. Further, it is desirable that the student integrates creative or practical work with analytical work.
As an employed PhD student you are expected to commit to full time research and to be located in the Malmö or Öresund region. Course work, regular supervision, potential teaching commitments and participation in the seminar culture of K3 mean that long distance research is not feasible for this PhD position. Decisions regarding employment of PhD students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§.
Eligibility requirements
The general requirements for third-cycle (PhD) education are that the student has
1) received a second-cycle higher education degree,
2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle, or
3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.
Special requirements for the position are knowledge and skills corresponding to a second-cycle degree (master) in media and communication studies or in another subject that is relevant to media and communication studies (such as communication for development).
Special requirements can also be fulfilled by demonstrating equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, nationally or internationally.
Basis of assessment
Initial assessment concerns the general and specific eligibility requirements (above).
Further, according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student’s ability to appropriate the advanced learning of the third-cycle PhD programme. The previously written material and the dissertation plan are important indicators of this ability. (Refer to instructions on the form of the application, below.)
Another important basis of assessment is the degree to which the proposed research can contribute to Media and Communication studies and the collaborative research environment at K3.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities
As a Quantitative Analyst in the Strategic Risk team, you will partly be working on the model development and analysis of the inhouse-built valuation model for the entire production asset portfolio of Vattenfall. This is used both for the valuation of the Group asset portfolio as well as for ad-hoc requests by senior management to support strategic decision-making. Moreover, you will be involved in big investment projects (>10 million EUR) – of which the valuation is based on complex models and methodologies – through close cooperation with valuation analysts and through contributing to the independent review of the project. Role overview
The Stockholm Partnership Development team require an additional developer with a great eye for the Android platform and interest in exploring other mobile and handheld platforms.
In this role you will be responsible for (Android) native and Unity specific development for all past and future Toca Boca apps and for bringing them to our partner platforms. This will include creative problem solving to work around technical specification challenges related to non-Apple, Google Play and Amazon platforms, as well as gameplay thinking and gameplay adaption/ creation to add Partner specific or bespoke characteristics depending on the intended partner /platform.
Working with and helping to mentor a Junior Android/ Unity Developer in the Partnership Development team will also be a key part of the role, and a way to ensure that we are able to scale up the ambition, creativity and output of the Partnership Development team moving forward. Shifo's Vision is "A day when no child dies or suffers from preventable diseases". And Shifo is working to develop and implement solutions that ensure children can be registered and receive unique personal numbers, and that children are followed up to ensure they receive quality preventive health services.
Shifo is currently focusing its efforts to strengthen health systems in Africa and Asia.
We are current looking for a software engineer who would like to join the technology team and help Shifo to get closer to its vision.
System/software development is an integral part of Shifo where we work hard to bring the best experience to the end-users by developing among others healthcare applications, transparency systems and much more.
Shifo Team are quite an international bunch of people, who were working previously at KTH, Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institutet, and we decided to dedicate ourselves to this cause. And we are based in Stockholm, Sweden.
We hire for attitide rather than competence, so below expectations are only a desired checklist:
- You love turning ideas into working code
- You have minimum of 2 years of experience in development of software applications/platform and understanding human computer interaction
- Experience in web development and knowledge/understanding of Python, Pandas, Docker
- Knowledge in front-end technologies and libraries such as HTML5, CSS3, LESS, JavaScript, jQuery
- Experience in administration and development in PostgreSQL, MySQL databases
- Disciplined approach to test-driven development, A/B testing, and metrics-driven decision making.
- Experience working with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
- Strong problem solving skills with the ability of debugging and troubleshooting
- English language proficiency (spoken and written)

Shifo Foundation is a non-profit organisation based in Sweden. Shifo's vision is a day when no child dies or suffers from preventable diseases. Shifo develops solutions based on Smart Paper Technology to enable relevant and quality data for use to drive continuous improvement in quality of care and health outcomes for women and children during ante, intra, post-natal and child health services.
Four indicators are crucial for Shifo - 1) enabling child registration and individual health records for more than 99% of all children, no matter where they live, 2) minimising administration for health workers by 60% per beneficiary, 3) ensuring data quality of electronic medical records is above 99% for all health service delivery points, and 4) more than 95% of health centres perform continuous actions to improve quality of health service delivery, based on key performance indicators.
