2 three-year postdocs in political communication and political psychology at Aarhus University

The Department of Political Science, Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for two three-year full-time postdoctoral researchers to join the research project “The Politics of Shaming and Shamelessness: How Elite Rhetoric Fuels Hostility and Tolerance for Political Violence”, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation (Semper Ardens: Accelerate) and headed by Associate Professor Tobias Widmann. The starting date is flexible and subject to mutual agreement but expected to be between December 2026 and February 2027.

The project
Healthy political discourse is the lifeblood of democracy. Yet across Western democracies, discourse has grown markedly more hostile, and physical assaults on politicians, attacks on minorities, and mobs storming legislatures show how hostility increasingly spills over into political violence. The project examines how elites, through their rhetoric, contribute to this development. It focuses on the emotion of shame and two connected rhetorical practices that have been on the rise over the last decades: shaming, where elites publicly brand opponents as norm violators and threats to the moral fabric of society, and shamelessness, where elites reassure their supporters that stigmatized beliefs or behaviors are normal or even honorable. These practices do not merely express disagreement – they recalibrate what counts as legitimate behavior and instruct citizens on which actions should be punished or excused.

The project is organized around three work packages. Work package I develops computational tools to detect and quantify shaming and shamelessness in elite political discourse across advanced democracies. Work package II examines the causal consequences of elite shaming and shamelessness for citizens’ discursive norms, hostility in debate, and tolerance of political violence. Work package III develops and tests remedies against the harmful effects of this rhetoric, using generative agent-based simulations and AI-chatbot-based dialogue experiments.

The two postdocs advertised in this call will take on leading roles in the empirical work of the project, with different but complementary profiles. Both postdocs are expected to have an affinity to computational methods and tools. The project is funded by a Carlsberg Foundation Semper Ardens: Accelerate grant, an ambitious funding instrument supporting research of high international standing led by mid-career researchers. The project runs for four years from August 2026 to July 2030 and is carried out by a team of two postdocs and student assistants led by Associate Professor Tobias Widmann.

The positions
Postdoc 1 will focus on the development and application of computational tools in the project. This includes, first and foremost, computational text analysis to detect shaming and shamelessness in parliamentary debates, party manifestos, press releases, and elite social-media content. It also includes other forms of computational tools used in the project, such as generative agent-based simulations with LLM-powered agents and AI-chatbot-based dialogue interventions. The postdoc will lead the empirical work on work package I and contribute to the computational components of work packages II and III.

Postdoc 2 will focus on the experimental and quasi-experimental work of the project. This includes designing and implementing online and mock social-media experiments, developing causal identification strategies in observational data, and conducting human experiments with AI chatbots as adaptive dialogue interventions. The postdoc will lead the empirical work on work packages II and III, with a strong emphasis on research design and causal inference.

Both postdocs are expected to combine their respective methodological profiles with an active interest in computational tools. They will be part of a collaborative team including the PI and student assistants. Research will primarily be carried out in collaboration with other project members. In addition, the positions involve opportunities to pursue independent work within the overall focus of the project. The successful applicant will become part of an exciting and ambitious research project and a supportive research team with a collegial and respectful atmosphere. There will be excellent opportunities for intellectual development and mentoring, with a focus on how the candidate can make use of the postdoctoral position to develop their career.

In addition to the outlined research tasks, the position implies modest teaching obligations equivalent to one course per year.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD in political science or a closely related discipline (e.g., communication, sociology, computational social science, psychology) by the starting date of the position. We are looking for outstanding candidates who can demonstrate:

  • A strong record (relative to career stage) of research on political communication, political behavior, political psychology, or a closely related area.

  • An affinity to computational tools and methods, and strong programming skills (e.g., Python and/or R).

  • Familiarity with research on emotions, social norms, incivility, or political violence.

  • High level of professional English proficiency, both written and oral.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international team.

  • Experience with or interest in comparative research across multiple democracies.


For Postdoc 1, we particularly look for:

  • Documented experience with computational text analysis, including natural language processing and the use of (multilingual) large language models / transformer-based models.

  • Experience with large-scale data collection (e.g., parliamentary speeches, manifestos, press releases, social-media data).

  • Interest in or experience with other computational tools relevant to the project, such as generative agent-based simulations or LLM-based conversational interventions.


For Postdoc 2, we particularly look for:

  • Documented experience with experimental and/or quasi-experimental research design.

  • Strong skills in statistical analysis and causal inference.

  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in LLM-based methods, including the use of conversational AI or generative agents in experimental settings.

The successful candidate will be based at Energy, AAU – Aalborg Campus and will play a leading role in establishing a new research group with a strong focus on multi-scale digital twins for electrical systems, including their interaction with advanced loads such as Power-to-X (P2X) processes.

The research will address key challenges related to performance, reliability, stability, control, and degradation mechanisms in integrated electrical energy and conversion systems. The position is designed to strengthen our research platform through complementary experimental and theoretical competences, and the candidate is expected to contribute to both modelling and validation activities (e.g., hardware-in-the-loop, real-time simulation, and experimental setups).

AAU has already made significant investments in research hardware and facilities supporting this area, and additional investments are expected in the coming years. Funding opportunities include both external grants and participation in strategic initiatives such as the CAPeX Pioneer Center.

 

Key Research Areas

The candidate will contribute to developing and applying digital twins (data-driven and physics-based) with emphasis on modelling, control, optimization, and real-time implementation, for example within specific Power-to-X applications. Relevant domains include (but are not limited to):

  • Electrical power conversion and power electronics
  • Transmission and distribution systems, grid dynamics, and stability
  • Electrochemistry, thermochemistry, and catalysis linked to P2X processes
  • Renewable energy production and storage systems Real-time simulation and hardware-/software-in-the-loop approaches
  • Grid and market integration of P2X systems supported by digital twins
Teaching

The candidate should have a sound background in a relevant area of energy engineering or similar e.g., electrical, control or chemical engineering, AI and preferably relevant work experience from industry or academia. The candidate should preferably also document an understanding of electric power systems, power electronics, control and grid-connected services. Irrespective of the academic background, the candidate must document how his previous research has been applied to energy processes, technologies, or systems. Modelling experience and competences will be highly prioritized, as well as documented skills in laboratory work related to the real-time simulation and implementation of process control in control/hardware-in-the-loop applications.

As it is expected, the successful candidate will take a leading role in establishing a strong research group within electrochemistry and electrode performance and degradation studies. Strong collaborative skills combined with personal ambition and drive are key ingredients in making it successful. 

Qualification requirements 
Applicants for a tenure track assistant professorship must have academic qualifications at PhD level.  

When appointing tenure track assistant professors, Aalborg University also place particular emphasis on: 

  • The candidate can demonstrate a high degree of autonomy in their previous education and employment path
  • The candidate shows considerable potential and is among the best in their field

Assessment in connection with transfer to associate professorship
The assessment in connection with transition to tenure as an associate professor normally takes place in the final six months of the tenure track assistant professors’ employment. However, the employee may request that an assessment take place at an earlier time in the first four years. If this assessment finds that the employee is not academically qualified, they may request another assessment within the final six months of their period of employment. A maximum of two assessments may take place. 

The assessment, on transition to the associate professorship, will as a minimum, emphasize the following qualifications in relation to the scientific subject area of the tenure track assistant professorship: 

  • Research qualifications equivalent to the level that can be achieved on the basis of satisfactorily completed employment as tenure track assistant professor.
  • Documented scientific production at international level. Assessment will be based on up to ten selected publications selected by the employee.
  • Documentation of pedagogical supervision and upgrading of qualifications, including a positive written assessment of teaching qualifications. The assessment will also be based on the employee's teaching portfolio.
  • The level of contribution to an active academic environment as well as the ability to collaborate and build relationships.
  • The level of experience with grant proposals and experience of communicating research to relevant stakeholders. 

If the tenure track assistant professor fails to request that their qualifications be assessed in the last year of their period of employment or if they are assessed as not academically qualified, the university must immediately initiate dismissal proceedings in accordance with the collective agreement rules.

Your work tasks
As Professor in electric power systems and electrification you are expected to establish and grow a new research group in electrification and transmission systems. The group will focus on the integration of large shares of inverter based renewable energy (IBR), cross border power transmission and system related issues such as stability and transmission bottlenecks. Transmission power systems play a major role in the green transition and are often the bottleneck for sufficiently fast progress. New renewable energy generation as well as large consumers waiting to be electrified are sometimes put on hold because transmission systems cannot follow the demand.

The professor is expected, in cooperation with both AAU based researchers as well as international world-class researchers, to identify ways to develop the power system from a one-grid perspective, enabling a faster electrification. This development must consider technical/economical/societal challenges from a holistic perspective considering elements such as:

  • flexible transmission network planning
  • cross-border transmission capacity
  • system stability with large IBR shares
  • multi-terminal HVDC, P2X, storage providing system services
  • blackouts and network restoration in IBR based power system
  • advanced simulation platforms and digital twins as a holistic decision support for complex system phenomena as well as the more practical considerations of operating such power systems. 

A key success criterion for the position is the establishment of a funding self supportive and growing research group with at least ten members within a five year horizon. This includes attracting competitive national and international research grants and building strong cooperation with TSO/DSO companies, as well as with industry partners in Denmark and across Europe.
The department will support you in founding the research group by investing in an additional position as assistant or associate professor. Together with the Head of Section, you will have the opportunity to recruit this colleague within the first year and you will receive support in establishing and positioning the group within AAU Energy and the wider energy research landscape.

The focus of the professorship will be mainly on research, with a limited amount of teaching and supervision within core research areas. Teaching and supervision will take place within electrical engineering and related programmes at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD level, and over time you are expected to contribute to the development of courses and project activities that reflect your research profile. The position is placed in the Section for Electric Power Systems and Microgrids.

Your Competencies
The position requires an internationally highly recognized researcher. You must have a strong, proven track record of attracting and leading large international research as PI successfully as well as an excellent set of academic credentials including first authorships in prestigious journals and conferences such as IEEE and CIGRE within the topics relevant for the position.

You have solid experience with interdisciplinary collaboration with stakeholders outside academia at both national and international levels. You can document experience from collaboration with TSO and DSO companies, and you are motivated by working in partnerships where research results are discussed, tested and implemented in real power systems. Active roles in knowledge exchange power grid societies (e.g., CIGRE) and practical experience with power system operation and planning are considered clear advantages.

You hold a relevant professional and educational background within electric power systems. The position requires research qualifications at doctoral level within electrical power transmission or closely related areas.

You communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing, and you can present complex technical material clearly to different audiences. Non-Danish and non-Scandinavian speaking candidates are expected to learn Danish to a fluent level within three years in order to participate fully in everyday departmental life and in relevant local collaboration.
The position requires that you can obtain security clearance by the relevant Danish authorities in order to access data related to critical infrastructure.

SDU Robotics

SDU Robotics conducts research among others within the fields of robotics and computer vision. The unit focuses on research problems from real robotics applications within manufacturing industries, hospitals, elderly care, and other partners in society.   • All documents must be in English and PDF format. CPR number (civil registration number) must be crossed out. All PDF-files must be unlocked, allow binding and may not be protected by password.

Assessment

Assessment of applications will be done under the existing Appointment Order for universities. Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and, if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material. 

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns them. 

Interviews and tests may be part of the overall evaluation and references may be obtained.
