Summary of the Advanced features of European Digital Credentials for Learning webinar

European Digital Credentials for Learning (EDC) have rapidly become a cornerstone of Europe’s digital education ecosystem. Today, more than 76,000 credentials have been issued to learners’ Europass wallets, with universities, vocational education and training providers, university alliances, Erasmus+ projects, and national initiatives leading the way.

As EDC adoption accelerates and digitalisation becomes a central priority, the need for deeper technical understanding has never been greater. This is why the Commission organised a dedicated webinar to explore advanced implementation details and equip organisations with the knowledge to fully exploit the potential offered by the EDC infrastructure.

Following the success of the Basics of European Digital Credentials for Learning webinar, this session focused on technical implementation details on 11 December 2025 with approximately 200 participants attending live.

What was covered in the webinar?

The session began with an introduction by the European Commission, outlining different implementation scenarios. It then moved to showcasing all the practical guidance and resources available on the code.europa.eu repository. Key learning points included:

  • understanding the difference between EDC claim types

  • learning how to build, seal, and issue EDCs via APIs

  • replicating the look and feel of paper certificates by customising EDCs’ preview images

  • getting early insights into upcoming developments:

    - new credential types

    - improved sealing capabilities

  • tailored tips for University Alliances

  • highlighting the importance of feedback on EDC implementation via this short survey

Engaging Q&A session

The webinar concluded with a lively Q&A, where participants raised questions on topics mostly around interoperability, creating code-based systems, issuing micro-credentials and role management within organisations.
