We are inviting applications for a 3-year PhD Fellowship in Biostatistics to be based at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo (UiO).

Join a vibrant and supportive research community with leading national and international collaborations. OCBE is one of Europe's most active biostatistics centres with about 75 researchers. The centre is internationally recognized, with interests spanning a broad range of research areas in biostatistics, machine learning and epidemiology and numerous collaborations with leading bio-medical research groups internationally and in Norway. OCBE is a partner in Integreat - the Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-driven Machine Learning and in TRUST - The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI.

The successful applicant will join the research group Statistical learning in molecular medicine and the high-dimensional statistics environment at OCBE, and be part of a multi-disciplinary research consortium called T-PRESS: Trustworthy Personalized Evidence to Support Sustainable Healthcare Decisions.

    About the project

The fellowship period is 3 years and devoted to carrying out a project entitled “Reliable Bayesian prediction models with uncertainty quantification for trustworthy personalized treatment decisions in the T-PRESS Evidence Ecosystem Framework”. The primary objective of the T-PRESS consortium is to make it easier for clinicians and patients to make personalized shared decisions regarding treatment options in cancer. The project will use emerging adjuvant immunotherapy treatment options for renal cell carcinoma as a use case.

The successful applicant will develop Bayesian statistical and machine learning methods for treatment response prediction using clinical information, molecular characterizations of the tumor and results of in vitro drug response experiments with so-called patient-derived organoids (PDOs), with the aim to provide personalized risk assessments and predictions for treatment effect, with explicit uncertainty estimates. The following research questions will be addressed in the project:

    1. How can existing statistical models of drug response be adapted to accurately model the biological and technical variability of PDOs/ immune cell co-cultures to identify biomarker candidates?

    2. How to effectively integrate heterogeneous data from clinic, high-dimensional multi-omics, and PDO functional assays while accounting for dependency structures and biological knowledge?

    3. To what extent does the inclusion of multi-omics and patient-derived organoid data provide added predictive value over established clinical risk factors?

    4. How can prediction models be validated to ensure they are trustworthy and reliable for integration into living digital decision aids at the point of care?

    About the PhD program

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the doctoral degree program at the Faculty of Medicine for a PhD in medicine and health sciences and the fellow is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The admission must be approved within three months.

    More about the position

The position is suitable for candidates who seek to conduct original work that contributes to theoretical development and empirical knowledge both at TIK and in the greater community of innovation scholars. Much of the ongoing work in the innovation group is based on externally funded projects. This postdoctoral position is not, and it allows applicants to develop an independent proposal based on their own interest.

The position encompasses 6 months of teaching duties within TIK’s multidisciplinary PhD, master and bachelor programs, including supervision of candidates and students within these programs. An extension of up to 6 months is possible if additional teaching or other meritorious tasks are agreed upon.

A postdoctoral position is intended to help the successful candidate develop a research profile and competencies that qualify them to apply for a permanent position in academia. To this end, the main focus of this position is to conduct research, including publication and dissemination. In addition, the fellow is expected to actively contribute to the broader research agenda and environment of the TIK research group of Innovation Studies.

If the postdoctoral researcher does not already possess the teaching/pedagogical qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professorship (incl. formal training), the department shall facilitate the acquisition of such qualifications during the employment period. Additionally, the position may provide other competencies relevant to the postdoctoral fellow’s future career.

To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are expected to submit a career development plan, specifying career goals and the competencies that the postdoctoral fellow should acquire, no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period. The department is responsible for ensuring that the plan is followed up and that the postdoctoral researcher has access to career guidance throughout the duration of the postdoctoral fellowship.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Evidence-Based and Behavioural Medicine
    UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
    Norway, OSLO

    About the position

A three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is available at the Department of Behavioural Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB), University of Oslo.

The position is linked to the research project “Communicating drug evidence to support kind and careful health decisions.”

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Professor Per Olav Vandvik and collaborate closely with national and international partners, including MAGIC Evidence Ecosystem Foundation (with Vandvik as founder and now chief scientist) and leading research groups in Europe (LSE, Oxford, KU Leuven) and North America (Harvard, Dartmouth).

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be part of the Department of Behavioural Medicine at IMB, a multidisciplinary environment focusing on health behaviour, decision-making, and clinical communication.

    Project description

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has produced major advances, as exemplified by digital and trustworthy living guidelines and tools for shared decision-making (SDM) in an enhanced evidence ecosystem (www.magicevidence.org). Implementation barriers include clinicians and patients facing time pressure and increasingly complex treatment choices. The breakthrough for Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) holds great potential, yet its trustworthiness and impact on care remains uncertain. Integration of EBM, behavioural science and technology holds potential to unlock key barriers along the road to kind and careful patient care.

Within this context, the project will investigate how evidence on treatment benefits, harms, burden and uncertainty is communicated and used and how this – through improved decision support tools and AI - affects decision-making in practice. The project is likely to primarily focus on drugs within selected clinical topics such as oncology, chronic pain and diabetes due to ongoing projects and opportunities.

This position offers a unique opportunity to conduct high-impact research embedded in global guideline development and evidence-to-practice initiatives. The fellow will work within an international network of leading researchers, clinicians, journals, and policy organisations and will have opportunities for high-impact publications and extensive networking.

The appointment is a full-time position for a period of three years (10% devoted to career-promoting work, usually teaching).
