About the project National implementation of global goals: Coherence between Nationally Determined Contributions and the Sustainable Development Goals Several studies have pointed at potential goal conflicts between the Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement (NDCs) and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Thus far, connections made at a rhetorical level have not translated into strategies and practices of strong policy coherence, which can be seen as a hallmark of truly ambitious climate action. Our aim is to enhance effectiveness of policy coherence efforts by countries in their NDC and SDG work. Building on our existing analysis of NDC and SDG interaction, including a visualisation tool used by the UN (http://ndc-sdg.info/), this project takes a next step in policy coherence research by using a robust framework for comparative analysis of in-depth country cases representing different levels of vulnerability and fossil fuel dependence: Australia, Colombia, Fiji and Sweden. It will analyze the applicability of insights gained for other countries. The project responds to calls from the scientific community to focus on national implementation and understand domestic factors influencing climate ambition. It also responds to calls from policy practitioners in the case countries and international organizations for best practices and tools for enhancing policy coherence. The research team has a proven track record in engaging in co-creation with stakeholders and producing policy-relevant tools and guidance. It is supported by a reference group including several key Swedish and international organizations.

PhD student Position in Media and Communication Studies
Malmö Universitet
Sweden, Malmö
School of Arts and Communication (K3) K3 is a multidisciplinary school with approximately 80 employees and 1000 full-time students. The school’s education and research deal with design, media, art, culture and society and it plays an important role in the Öresund region’s cultural life. K3 offers PhD education in Media and Communication Studies and Interaction Design. At the heart of K3’s Media and Communication Studies is a commitment to developing intervening, responsive and creative approaches to current and future challenges. A departmental track record in supporting research in New Media, Public Spheres and Forms of Expression provides further context for PhD education in Media and Communication studies, ensuring an outward societal focus that is consistent with the vision for Malmö University as a whole. Scope and Practicalities of the research education K3’s PhD education prepares you for a career in research or teaching in academia, as well as cultivating scope for advanced professional work outside of the academic field. The goals of meaningful collaboration with other researchers, and the development of regional, national and international networks fostered by the PhD processes would support both career directions. With relevance to this PhD position, we are consolidating existing research platforms at Malmö University such as Medea and are devoting considerable energy toward the establishment of substantial new research programmes, like the Data Society Research Programme, and research platforms such as Collaborative Future Making and Rethinking Democracy. More formally stated, and in line with the General Study Plan for third-cycle programme in Media and Communication Studies, the aim of the PhD programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for a PhD student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the chosen subject area. The PhD programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is completed when the PhD student publicly defends his/her dissertation. The four years of PhD education can be extended in case of, for example, teaching commitments. Aims of the Media and Communication programme include: the experience of collaboration with other researchers, critical and scholarly engagement with both traditional and/or contemporary discourses in the field of Media and Communication, and establishing a national and international contact network. Further, it is desirable that the student integrates creative or practical work with analytical work. As an employed PhD student you are expected to commit to full time research and to be located in the Malmö or Öresund region. Course work, regular supervision, potential teaching commitments and participation in the seminar culture of K3 mean that long distance research is not feasible for this PhD position. Decisions regarding employment of PhD students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§. Eligibility requirements The general requirements for third-cycle (PhD) education are that the student has 1) received a second-cycle higher education degree, 2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle, or 3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge. Special requirements for the position are knowledge and skills corresponding to a second-cycle degree (master) in media and communication studies or in another subject that is relevant to media and communication studies (such as communication for development). Special requirements can also be fulfilled by demonstrating equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, nationally or internationally. Basis of assessment Initial assessment concerns the general and specific eligibility requirements (above). Further, according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student’s ability to appropriate the advanced learning of the third-cycle PhD programme. The previously written material and the dissertation plan are important indicators of this ability. (Refer to instructions on the form of the application, below.) Another important basis of assessment is the degree to which the proposed research can contribute to Media and Communication studies and the collaborative research environment at K3. Additional assessment criteria include demonstrated analytical and communication skills, and demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English. Additional information Employment is full-time and time restricted according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 7 §. Application You apply through Malmö Universities’ recruitment system by clicking the button “Apply”. It is your own responsibility that your application is complete with all required documentation according to the adverted position. Your application must have arrived no later than 31 January 2019. The application should include the following documents: 1. Application form 2. CV with up to three references 3.
