The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 2-year postdoc position, starting September 1st 2026, offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on orbitronics and metastable states in two-dimensional quantum materials. The project involves fabrication of devices and their integration with the existing angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) infrastructure at the ASTRID2 light source to discover quantum geometric effects and their link to new forms of transport phenomena.

Job description


You are expected to contribute to the development of new types of 2D material devices that can realize orbital, spin and valley Hall effects that form the basis for prototypical memory devices. You will command and expand a series of novel infrastructures to achieve these goals, including semi-automated fabrication systems in inert environments, clean-room facilities for device production, micro-focused synchrotron light for ARPES characterization at ASTRID2 as well as ultrafast femtosecond laser pulses for optical control of the materials.  
  • You will take a leading role in defining, designing and manufacturing advanced 2D devices that are compatible with our microARPES experiment at ASTRID2 with the specific aim to uncover orbital-driven phenomena in materials.
  • The scientific goals are to combine synchrotron and ultrafast laser sources to visualize, excite and control electronic states with distinct orbital and spin textures in quantum materials.
  • You will work with metallic and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide, including materials that are sensitive to ambient conditions, which requires development of new techniques to isolate and integrate such materials with devices for photoemission experiments carried out in UHV conditions.
  • You are expected to play a leading role in the laboratory and be the main driver for maintenance and upgrade activities in relation to the device fabrication infrastructure as well as their interface to the ARPES and laser systems.
  • You are expected to contribute to the training and education of students in relation to project activities, as well as being a team-player in the group in relation to being open and supportive of your colleagues and in group related activities.
 

Your profile

Applicants should hold a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics (or related field) and are expected to have experience within the following research areas:
  • Electronic structure of two-dimensional materials (f.ex. graphene, hBN and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors)
  • Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy or similar techniques to probe excitations in solids
  • Experience with exfoliation and stacking of 2D materials and their heterostructures, as well as integration with device architectures.
The applicant is required to demonstrate:
  • A good track record of designing, maintaining and applying ultrahigh vacuum systems in the context of experimental physics. 
  • Use of synchrotron beamline facilities to investigate properties of matter  
The applicant is expected to be a team-player that is strongly motivated to work with students and external collaborators, as well as being supportive and open towards other group members.
 

Who we are

You will take part in a research team that is strongly devoted to uncovering electronic properties of new materials using state-of-the-art synchrotron- and laser-based techniques. Our research is based around the synchrotron source ASTRID2 in Aarhus where we operate a beamline for angle-resolved photoemission experiments, in addition to hosting facilities for isolating and stacking 2D materials into devices. We have strong collaborative ties with some of the most advanced international facilities for conducting photoemission experiments on nanoscale and two-dimensional materials, providing ample opportunity for networking. The research program is primarily organized under an ERC Consolidator Grant project (EXCITE) and a Villum Ascending Investigator project on orbitronics.


What we offer


The successful candidate is offered an opportunity to contribute to a competitive new program on developing orbitronic devices with 2D materials, guided by unique microARPES experiments. You will be given freedom and responsibility to command our infrastructures for building and characterizing 2D material devices. Postdoc Position for development of RNA design software

The position is part of the project RIBOTICS (RNA Origami Technology in Cell Systems) funded by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).

Job description

In the Andersen lab for Biomolecular Design (andersen-lab.dk) we are experts in designing DNA, RNA and proteins to create nanoscale devices for applications in biotechnology and medicine. The lab invented the RNA origami method [1] and have developed basic algorithms and software for RNA design. However, there is a great need to develop new software for the design of advanced RNA origami robots that can sense, compute and actuate [2].

In the recently funded RIBOTICS (RNA Origami Technology in Cell Systems) project, the lab aims to develop RNA origami robots for cell factories (yeast production strains) for improved synthesis of valuable proteins and biochemicals.
The project of this position aims to develop computational methods for design of modular RNA origami robots. The project includes the following tasks:
  • Develop computer-aided design software for modular construction of switchable RNA nanostructures.
  • Develop databases for RNA modules for automated building of atomistic models.
  • Develop multistate sequence design algorithm for rational design of RNA switches.
  • Develop database of cell type specific constraints for incorporation in RNA design algorithms.
The RIBOTICS project involves a team of 3 postdocs and 3 PhD students, who will work on design, characterization, and experimental verification of several RNA systems that can regulate gene expression, control enzyme proximity, sense product yields, and do molecular computations for feedback control. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the RIBOTICS team and will be part of a vibrant research environment at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center, where the lab is located.

Ben jij technisch sterk onderlegd, organisatorisch een kei en haal je energie uit het opvolgen van praktische interieurverbeteringen? Dan ben jij misschien de collega die wij zoeken.

Voor de opvolging van interne renovatiewerken binnen het raamcontract wederverhuring zoeken we een gedreven professional die graag de werven mee opvolgt en het overzicht bewaart.

Je staat in voor de volledige opvolging van renovatiewerken op pandniveau binnen het leegstandsbestek met externe aannemers. Je zorgt ervoor dat elk dossier vlot, correct en kwalitatief wordt afgehandeld. Je volgt hierbij een cyclus:

  • Je plant de werken in en bezoekt maandelijks 2 × 15 panden (maand 1).
  • Je organiseert rondgangen met aannemers en bespreekt de volledigheid van de voorziene werken (maand 2).
  • Je voert een eindrondgang uit met de aannemer na oplevering (maand 3).

In deze cyclus behoren deze taken oa tot je verantwoordelijkheden:

  • Je vertaalt de werkbonnen naar de meetstaat van de aannemer.
  • Je maakt een inschatting van de uit te voeren werken en vult aan of schrapt waar nodig.
  • Je voert controles uit op diverse werkdomeinen, waaronder (afbraakwerken, technieken, binnen- en buitenschrijnwerk, keuringen, ...).
  • Je controleert de vorderingsstaat en kijkt meerwerken nauwgezet na.
  • Je communiceert helder met de administratief medewerker voor de verdere afhandeling van het dossier richting WiV.
  • Je hebt bij voorkeur een diploma Technisch of beroeps secundair onderwijs in een technisch studierichting of bent gelijkwaardig door ervaring.
  • Je hebt een ruime bouwtechnische kennis en ervaring met interieurrenovaties.
  • Je hebt een oog voor kwaliteit en detail.
  • Je bent sterk in het bewaken van planning en voortgang.
  • Kennis van het bestek WiV (Wonen in Vlaanderen) is een troef.
  • Je bent organisatorisch sterk, denkt oplossingsgericht en bent in staat meerdere dossiers parallel op te volgen.
  • Je bent assertief maar diplomatisch in communicatie met aannemers en collega’s.
