Launch Event Report - European Digital Credentials for Learning

The European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit launched the European Digital Credentials for learning in an all-digital event on 25 October 2021 streamed via Youtube, Zoom, Facebook and Twitter.

More than 1500 participants attended to learn about the new standard of digital credentials in Europe. Moderated by Veerle Nuyts, the launch event presented a variety of speakers, including testimonials from stakeholders.  

Commissioner Schmit opened with a welcome speech, saying that “diplomas and other learning achievements are making their way into the digital world”. He added: “with European Digital Credentials for Learning, individuals can easily share their learning achievements in a secure and digital way, when applying for a job or for further studies and training”.

Moderated by Alison Crabb (Head of Unit, Skills Agenda Unit, European Commission), videos and speeches from stakeholders that have integrated European Digital Credentials for Learning highlighted the potential of digital credentials. They presented concrete examples of digital credentials in Europe, showing the possibilities and benefits of becoming an issuer. The session was concluded by closing remarks by Koen Nomden (Team Leader - Skills Agenda Unit, European Commission). 

Representatives from several stakeholder groups, including students, vocational education and training providers, trade unions, employers, and career guidance councillors presented their experience and comments on European Digital Credentials for Learning during quick-fire 3-minute interventions. 

The event sparked interesting conversations, with the DG EMPL team responding to participants raising challenging and relevant questions in the live online chat.
