How will you contribute?
Describe the main responsibilities of the position.
Refrigeration and air conditioning account for ~17% of global energy consumption, a figure expected to triple by 2050, while contributing over 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional vapor-compression cooling relies on high–global-warming-potential refrigerants, creating an urgent need for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives. Electrocaloric cooling is a promising solid-state technology that can be up to 20% more efficient than vapor-compression systems. It uses ferroelectric materials that undergo a reversible temperature change under an applied electric field. The materials heats upon application and cools upon removal of an electric field. LIST has been working on the topic for some years, specifically developing electrocaloric prototypes based on ceramics and polymers. LIST is recognized as one of the leading institutes in the field.
The role played by materials thermal conductivity on the behaviour of electrocaloric coolers is central to enable a proper understanding of the system. Therefore, this post doc is about studying the thermal conductivity of electrocaloric materials in the context of cooling devices. More specifically, one part will be devoted to the design and fabrication of heat exchangers integrated in electrocaloric coolers. The impact of materials and their thickness will be assessed in specific devices. Another part of this post doc will be devoted to the study of heat switches associated with electrocaloric materials, enabling the design of fluid-free cooling devices.
Other tasks include:
• Conference/group meetings participation
• Scientific Publications disseminating key findings from the project, in collaboration with supervisors.
• Training & Development (complete all mandatory institutional and laboratory safety trainings)
