A fully funded PhD fellowship in social anthropology is available at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo. The position will be dual degree fellowship between the University of Oslo and Makerere University, Uganda.
The appointed candidate will be one of three PhDs working in Oslo as part of the collaborative EU-funded doctoral training network HEALENAE: Health and Environment in Africa and Europe. The network will consist of up to 15 PhDs that together will work and learn as an international cohort and collaborate across projects to bring together insights anchored in different sectors and countries.
The candidate will conduct fieldwork in Africa and/or Europe, participate in annual training schools and writing retreats, and complete a 6 month stay with the secondary university, Makerere University in Uganda. More information about the network can be found here: https://healenae.eu/phd-calls
The PhD research fellow will be admitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences' PhD programme at the University of Oslo (UiO). The candidate will also be admitted to the doctoral programme of Makerere University (MU). This will require a separate registration process. The PhD research fellow will be supervised by professors at the Department of Social Anthropology and Makerere University (MU).

The candidate must develop a project description, which should be submitted as a part of the application. The description should show how the candidate’s project will contribute to the PhD project as proposed above but need not cover all the proposed objectives. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the prospective supervisors with ideas for research. See more about the requirements for the project description below. The appointment is for a duration of three years, and the candidate is expected to take part in the PhD programmes as described above and to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The successful candidate would ideally be available to start by 1 September 2026. Relocation to and residence in or close by Oslo city is required.
Note that applicants can be of any nationality. However, the candidate cannot have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies etc.) in Norway for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately prior to the recruitment date and must not hold a PhD.
Selection criteria
The successful candidate must have:
- Education equivalent to five years at university level in Norway, with two years (120 ECTS) at master’s level in social anthropology. Master’s degrees in closely related disciplines may be considered. The master’s degree must have been obtained by the time of application.
- An average grade of A or B (ECTS scale). The master’s thesis must have been awarded an A or B, or equivalent result.
- Minimum 3 months of ethnographic fieldwork experience as part of the degree(s) or otherwise.
- Demonstrable capacity to complete writing projects within deadlines
- Willingness to conduct long-term ethnographic fieldwork
- Willingness to work interdisciplinary, across borders and institutions, and as part of a larger team
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
- Excellent command of English (oral and written).

The position will be part of a project that includes various forms of public engagement. Experience from engagements with non-academic audiences is therefore an advantage.

About the Job
We have a vacancy for a senior researcher to contribute to externally funded projects at the Department of engineering cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.
The SmallSatLab at NTNU conducts research on satellite systems, including payload development, mission design, system engineering and integration, satellite control and operations, data analysis and algorithm development for a wide range of applications in remote sensing, data communication and localization. The lab currently operates two own satellites – the HYPSO-1 and -2 – while several new concepts and payloads are under development for new satellite missions. Research is currently centered around hyperspectral imaging (instruments, data processing algorithms and applications), satellite-based maritime surveillance and security, and integrated systems-of-systems where small satellites interact closely with autonomous systems, drones and other assets and data sources for advanced observation missions.
The researcher will conduct research in externally funded projects in the areas mentioned above, and assist the SmallSatLab with developing such projects. We are looking for candidates that have a broad interest, competence and experience in the field of small satellite systems, and with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Embedded systems hardware and software; system engineering; system integration and testing; navigation and localization; hyperspectral imaging and systems; data processing; maritime surveillance. The researcher will be a key resource in project teams where he or she will interact with other researchers, industry and government agencies.

Required selection criteria
“Seniorforsker 1109” (senior researcher)
To meet the qualification requirements for “seniorforsker” (Norwegian Civil Service Handbook 5.7.2 § 4), research competence at the associate professor level is required.
- A doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, for example control engineering, electronic systems, aerospace engineering, remote sensing, or similar.
- Experience with development and/or operation of small satellite systems, documented by publications.
- Documented expertise in one or more of the following areas: Embedded systems hardware and software; system engineering; system integration and testing; navigation and localization; hyperspectral imaging and systems; data processing algorithms; maritime surveillance.
- Good programming skills.
- Good written and oral English and Norwegian language skills.
The research planned for the position has civilian and dual use objectives. Some of the equipment being used is subject to export regulations or other limitations such as ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), and the position requires that the applicant has permission to use such equipment. Some activities will be subject to export control regulations and some may also require security clearance. The person hired should be eligible for security clearance at level KONFIDENSIELT in Norway.

Salary and conditions
As a researcher (code 1109) you are normally paid from gross NOK 600 000– NOK 750 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
