Are you interested in biomass resource utilization and renewable energy processes, and want to engage in research with skilled colleagues who share your interests? Maybe you can become our new colleague at the Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology at The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences. The position is available from 01.12.2026.
This is an educational position that is primarily intended to give promising researchers the opportunity to develop academically and professionally through organised research training.
It is a condition that the person who accepts the position applies for and is granted admission to the faculty’s doctoral programme in PhD in Technology within three months of starting in the position.
The doctoral programme includes relevant courses corresponding to approximately six months of study, a thesis based on independent research, active participation in national and international research environments, relevant research dissemination, a trial lecture and public defence of the thesis. The PhD research fellowship is for a fixed term of three years with pure organised research training.
Your personnel manager will be Ali Ghaderi, and your main supervisor will be Associate Professor Nora Cecilie I. S. Furuvik. It is a prerequisite that you live close by so that you can be present at, and available to, the academic environment at your workplace during ordinary working hours. The place of work will be at campus Porsgrunn.
About the doctoral project
The research project aims to develop a viable technology relevant for the sustainable commercial conversion of biomass waste to biofuels. The main objective of this project is to accelerate the utilization of biomass wastes for production of a green syngas via fluidized bed gasification with integrated CO2 capture. The focus is to increase the fundamental understanding of CO2 absorption in gasification of biomass. The overall approach is lab-scale experiments in combination with Computational Particle Fluid Dynamic (CPFD) model development.
The person appointed will be affiliated with the Research Group in Energy and Environmental Technology (URGENT).
Duties
- Complete the doctoral programme up to completion of the doctoral degree within the

- Be prepared for changes in your work tasks after appointment
Required qualifications
- Master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) (or equivalent qualifications) within Process Technology, Energy and Environmental Technology or Mechanical engineering
- Weighted average grade of B or higher on the master’s degree and thesis or an equivalent academic level according to USN's admission requirements.
- The master’s thesis must have been approved by the application deadline for the position.
- Excellent written and oral English language skills
- Meet the formal requirements for admission to USN’s doctoral programmes and The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences’s doctoral programme in Technology no later than three months after starting in the position
Preffered qualifications
- Knowledge of fluidized bed technology
- Knowledge of biomass gasification
- Experience with lab-scale reactor design, construction and operation
- Experience with experimental work
- Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling

Language requirements
Requirements for proficiency in English

- TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT)
- IELTS – International English Language Testing Service
- Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from the University of Cambridge
- PTE Academic – Pearson Test of English Academic

Project description
Applicants must submit a preliminary research proposal with the application. The project description for the research project should be short and concise, maximum 2–4 pages (600-1200 words). See further descriptions in the “Template for project descriptions for doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships at USN”:
- Introduction (the title, main problem and research questions and the background to the project)
- State of the art (the project’s research field)
- Theory
- Methodology
- Work plan
- Results and hypotheses
- Bibliography
Applications with a project description exceeding 1200 words will not be processed.
The project proposal will be included in the assessment of the applicant’s competence.
The final project description and work plan will be prepared in consultation with the supervisor(s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.

The Appointment Committee for Fellowship Positions (TUS) is the appointing authority for this position. Your competence for the position will be assessed by an expert committee.
