Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Social Inequality
UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

Job description

Applicants are invited for a three to four-year full-time position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Research on Equality in Education (CREATE), University of Oslo, Norway.

CREATE is an interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway with the objective of generating novel knowledge about how to reduce social inequality. The interdisciplinary center integrates researchers with substantive expertise from sociology, psychology, education, economics, and genetics, and methodological expertise from educational measurement, psychometrics, econometrics, statistics, and biostatistics. The Postdoctoral Fellowship is affiliated with CREATE’s research strand 1 «Identifying the barriers to equality in education», aiming to disentangle the causal mechanisms that hinder equality and to understand for whom, how, and why these mechanisms operate over time and across the life course.

More about the position

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to define and pursue their own research interests within the scope of Strand 1 research on inequality across the life course. Areas include research on educational inequality, labor market inequality, marginalization and social exclusion, family formation and dynamics, and health inequality. We welcome research into the contextual drivers of these inequalities and outcomes, including family environments, early childhood education and care, and broader school and neighborhood settings.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to be able to use advanced quantitative methods to draw causal inferences from non-experimental data, using existing data linkages available in CREATE. These include linkages of registry data across several decades, as well as registry data linked to multiple large surveys with longitudinal individual-level data, school-level aggregated data, and genetic data. The successful candidate should have prior knowledge of quasi-experimental methods and, preferably, experience with large data sources, such as registry data.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be embedded in the interdisciplinary Strand 1 group alongside researchers in sociology, psychology, education, economics, and related fields. We welcome candidates with a strong record of publishing in leading journals within their field and expect active participation in our interdisciplinary center.

The position is a full-time position for a period of three years. If there is a good match between the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs at the Department of Special Needs Education, then the position can be extended to four years with the 25% teaching duties, usually in the form of teaching, supervision, and assessment. The Department of Special Needs Education offers a bachelor’s degree in special needs education and five special education majors (speech and language therapy, hearing, language and communication, specific learning difficulties, psycho-social difficulties, and neurodevelopmental disabilities) at the master’s level, in addition to an international master’s program (Master's in Special Needs Education).

The main purpose of the fellowship is to build a research profile and competence that qualifies the postdoctoral fellow to apply for a position as associate professor within their disciplines. The position may also provide other competence with relevance for the postdoctoral fellow's further career.

If the Postdoctoral Fellow does not already have educational qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professor position, UiO shall facilitate the acquisition of such competence during the employment period.

A career plan shall be developed for the Postdoctoral Fellow, specifying the competencies the Postdoctoral Fellow should acquire. UiO is responsible for following up on the career plan and ensuring that the Postdoctoral Fellow has access to career guidance throughout the postdoctoral term.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Education, or other relevant fields. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved

  • Advanced quantitative research skills
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

To qualify for a four-year contract with teaching duties at The Department of Special Needs Education, the candidate must have:

  • Teaching and supervision experience
  • Knowledge of Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language)

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • The quality of the project description and the research topic’s relevance to Strand 1

Postdoctoral Researcher in Spatial Ecological Modeling and Interdisciplinary Biodiversity Science
UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

About the position

Applicants are invited for a 4-year position as a postdoctoral researcher in spatial ecological modelling in the interdisciplinary Convergence Environment BioM, based at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo (UiO).

The position includes compulsory career-enhancing work, such as project  management and coordination, teaching, curation of collections, and outreach.

Employment is scheduled to start on August 15th, 2026.

The BioM Convergence Environment

BioM - Methods for knowledge-based biodiversity monitoring and management under uncertainty - is an interdisciplinary Convergence Environment under UiO:Life Science, based at the Natural History Museum, and in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Biosciences and the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas. From Jan 1st  2026, UiO:Life Science is part of the Centre for Global Sustainability.

To respond effectively to the accelerating biodiversity crisis, society urgently needs decision-making systems that are scientifically robust, transparent about uncertainty, and responsive to ecological, ethical, and policy contexts. BioM will unite ecology, statistics, and philosophy to improve the modelling and governance of biodiversity under uncertainty. The project develops process-explicit, hierarchical models that capture key ecological dynamics, integrate diverse and incomplete data sources, and account for uncertainty in ways that are relevant to real-world management. At the same time, it addresses how models are used in practice clarifying the assumptions they carry, how they influence decisions, and how they can be improved to better align with societal goals. This includes philosophical analysis of how evidence is constructed, how ethical trade-offs are handled, and how scientific advice is legitimized in policy.

BioM is committed to creating a high-quality, supportive environment for the training and development of PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows, including individually tailored career development plans with formal supervision and project-based learning tied to deliverables. Secondments, consortium meetings, and workshops will provide hands-on experience in collaborative modelling, scientific synthesis, and science-policy engagement central to enabling young researchers to navigate the complexity of transdisciplinary research and build strong academic identities.

More about the position

The postdoctoral fellow will be one of four recruitment positions in BioM filled simultaneously (parallel hires: 2 PhD fellows, in population ecology and statistics, and a postdoctoral fellow in philosophy). This position will be affiliated with the Geo-Ecology Research Group (GEco) at the Natural History Museum (NHM), led by Professor Olav Skarpaas. The  postdoctoral fellow will carry out research on spatial processes, environmental drivers and adaptive management, addressing the following aims (WP3 in BioM): 1) develop spatial models for forest ecosystems that integrate ecological processes, including tree demography, with large-scale heterogenous data on species and environment, 2) assess major drivers of spatial dynamics and quantify uncertainty in spatial predictions, and 3) support adaptive management under uncertainty through interpretable biodiversity metrics and devices.

The postdoc will collaborate closely with the project team (PIs, PhDs and postdoc), project partners and stakeholders on demographic analysis (WP2), modelling methods (WP4), and perspectives on nature governance (WP5). The postdoc is expected to co-organize project workshops and seminars, and will lead a synthesis paper, co-authored by recruitment positions and project partners, identifying processes and uncertainties to target to further improve model support for–and learning from–management (aim 3).

During the 4-year postdoctoral period, the successful candidate shall allocate 25% of normal working  hours (i.e. a total of 1 year’s work) to career-enhancing work. This career-promoting work, which is funded by the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo, will include training in transferable skills related to research in a museum environment, such as project management and organization, as well as participation in field work, teaching, outreach and curation of collections.

The postdoc will be based at the Natural History Museum most of the time, with shorter secondments to other departments at the University of Oslo involved in the project and includes opportunities for international exchange.
