Job description
Applicants are invited for a three to four-year full-time position as a PhD Research Fellow at the Centre for Research on Equality in Education (CREATE), University of Oslo, Norway.
CREATE is an interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway with the objective of generating novel knowledge about how to reduce social inequality. The interdisciplinary center integrates researchers with substantive expertise from sociology, psychology, education, economics, and genetics, and methodological expertise from educational measurement, psychometrics, econometrics, statistics, and biostatistics.
More about the position
CREATE is an interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway with the overall objective of generating novel knowledge about how to reduce social inequality. CREATE has three strands, and the PhD position belongs to Strand 1.
Strand 1 aims to identify barriers to equality. Strand 1 further aims to test the generalizability of malleable factors hindering equality across countries and time. A malleable factor refers to variables that are within the control of schools and educational policy and would include for instance school factors (like school climate, teacher characteristics, teaching quality, student motivation and attitudes, student cognitive outcomes). International large-scale assessment (ILSA) like Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) may be used to make generalizable inferences across countries and time.
While the main focus of the PhD position lies in examining factors that may enhance equality across countries and over time, it is desirable to also examine these factors in-depth in the Norwegian context via qualitative approaches including for instance interviews, classrooms observations or similar.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to define and pursue their own research interests that would cover both of these two aims within mathematics: 1) identifying factors that reduce the achievement gap in mathematics between advantaged and disadvantaged students, and study their generalizability across countries and time, and 2) examine this/these factor(s) in depth in Norway with a qualitative approach (e.g. interviews or classroom observations).
The PhD Fellow will be expected to be able to use advanced quantitative methods to analyze ILSA data. The successful candidate should have prior knowledge of quantitative methods and experience with the complex designs and data of ILSAs.
The PhD Fellow will be embedded in the interdisciplinary Strand 1 group alongside researchers in sociology, psychology, education, economics, and related fields. We expect active participation in our strand and interdisciplinary center.
The position is a full-time position for a period of three years. If there is a good match between the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS), then the position can be extended to four years with the 25% teaching duties, usually in the form of teaching, supervision, and assessment.
The PhD Fellow must take part in the faculty’s approved PhD program, and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the PhD fellowship is to qualify the candidate for a research career within or beyond academia.
To support a strategic and well-structured PhD trajectory, the PhD Fellow will be required to develop a career and competence development plan in dialogue with the supervisory team early in the appointment period. The successful candidate will receive close supervision and is encouraged to develop a strong international research profile through collaboration, conference participation, and research stays abroad.
For more information, please see our web site.

Job description
A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) in gesture-vocalization relations in song performance is available in connection with the research project, SongGesture: Co-singing gesture and vocal performance across three musical traditions, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is affiliated with RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion at the University of Oslo (uio.no).
All RITMO researchers are co-located and work in a unique interdisciplinary constellation, with world-leading competence in musicology, psychology and informatics. It is expected that all members of the centre contribute to the general activities and collaborations within RITMO.
The researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities in sound/video recording, motion capture, eye tracking, physiological measurements, various types of brain imaging (EEG, fMRI), and rapid prototyping and robotics laboratories.
Applicants are required to upload a Research outline (uio.no), stating research questions and theoretical and methodological approaches that will further the goals of the project. The project description must present a feasible progress plan. It is expected that the applicant will be able to complete the project during the period of appointment. It is suggested that candidates should carefully read the Project website (uio.no) and details given below, in order to align their research plan appropriately.
About the project
The project, SongGesture, aims to significantly advance knowledge on how expert vocalists use gesture in support of their performance goals. Building on recent research showing an effect of gesture on co-occurring vocalization, SongGesture will advance the theorization of gesture-vocalization relations in musical contexts by considering also the physical interactions between gesture and vocal production movements (e.g., breathing and articulation). The project looks at co-singing gesturing practices in three different vocal performance traditions: beatboxing, European art song, and karnatak vocal music from South India. The candidate is not expected to have previous experience with these musical traditions, as this is covered by other project personnel.
The successful candidate for this position is expected to investigate multimodal correspondence between gesture, vocalization and vocal production movements through computational analysis and to explore the implications of the results for multimodal sense-making (how different modalities combine to create meaning). Tasks will include contributing to project theory and methods development for the analysis of multimodal communication in song performance; audio feature extraction; pose tracking from video and preparation of kinematic time-series data; dataset preparation; manual annotation of audiovisual data; pattern finding; computational multimodal analysis (including time series analysis); data visualization; exploration of multimodal sense-making; and co-writing articles.
About the position
The position is available for a period of 3 years. There is a 10% component of the position devoted to teaching and administrative duties. Given additional funding, the position may be extended to 4 years, with a 25 % duty component. This would depend on the qualifications of the recruited candidate, the department’s needs for teaching, and the centre’s need for assistance.
The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment and contribute to its development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.
A career plan shall be developed for the Postdoctoral Fellow, specifying the competencies the Postdoctoral Fellow should acquire. UiO is responsible for following up on the career plan and ensuring that the Postdoctoral Fellow has access to career guidance throughout the postdoctoral term.
If the Postdoctoral Fellow does not already have educational qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professor position, UiO shall facilitate the acquisition of such competence during the employment period.

About the position
We invite applicants for a four-year position as a PhD research fellow at the Institute of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Oslo. The position is associated with the interdisciplinary project: «Decoding addiction», funded by a UiO Life Science grant.
The candidate would join the “Project knockout” team and conduct laboratory testing of pain, reward, and stress in a newly discovered human genetic knockout model population. Data analysis of large-scale registry data comparing mutation carriers to non-carriers is also part of the project, which aims to generate novel insights into human endogenous opioid function.
The position is full-time for a fixed-term of four years and includes 25% career promoting work, which may consist of teaching, dissemination, and contribution to other activities at the Department. Start date: summer/autumn 2026.
More about the position
The project studies how Opioid analgesics are powerful medical tools with the potential to cause terrible side effects. Because their effects are so variable across individuals and contexts, many key debates remain unsettled in the field. Improved understanding of endogenous opioid functions in the healthy human brain is urgently needed.
While it is well known that opioid drugs interfere with the many functions endogenous opioids serve throughout the brain and body, current understanding relies too heavily on extrapolation from rodent studies and non-specific pharmacology in humans. Notably, genetically engineered ‘knockout’ mice that lack the mu-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) have revealed the opioid-dependence of e.g. pain and stress regulation. Moreover, an OPRM1 genetic dose response was found for reward by comparing knockouts to heterozygous knockdown mice with few mu-opioid receptors. The project centers on a newly discovered human OPRM1 knockout/knockdown model to probe human endogenous opioid function with a precision far exceeding existing antagonist studies in the field.
The project offers opportunities to develop unique competence in behavioral genetics, experimental psychology and psychopharmacology, whilst working in an ambitious yet friendly and collaborative, interdisciplinary environment. The research group comprises affective and social neuroscience, psychology, anesthesiology, and other disciplines and specializes in the study of pain, reward, stress, and addiction. The candidate will participate in study design, data collection, analysis, and publications in close collaboration with other team members and under the guidance of Siri Leknes. Further details about the project are available upon request.
Your main tasks will be:
- Help finalize and validate test setup for pain, stress, and reward tasks
- Contribute to recruitment, data collection and analysis of experimental data
- Contribute to gaining access to and data analysis of registry data including genetic information, e.g. from MoBa, UK Biobank, Hunt, and other relevant registries
- Maintain good collaboration within the Knockout team and across the disciplines represented in the broader Decode project
- First author papers summarizing and interpreting insights from experimental and registry data, taking into account insights from the preclinical and basic science parts of the Decode project
The PhD fellow will take part in the approved PhD program at the Department of Psychology. The main purpose of the PhD fellowship is to qualify the candidate for a research career within or beyond academia. To support a strategic and well-structured PhD trajectory, the PhD fellow will be required to develop a career and competence development plan in dialogue with the supervisory team early in the appointment period.
What skills are important in this role?
- Applicants must hold a medical degree or a Masters in psychology, neuroscience, or a closely related field.
- To be employed as a PhD Research Fellow, admission to a doctoral program is required, or there must be a binding agreement for admission. Read about admission to the Faculty's PhD program here: https://www.sv.uio.no/english/research/phd/application/phd-fellowship/
- Documented research experience relevant to the project is a requirement. This may come from a master’s thesis, research assistantship, or other comparable research activity, for example in psychopharmacology, computational neuroscience, experimental psychology, functional imaging, or behavioral genetics.
- Coding skills and experience with statistical modelling are a strong advantage.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
The cover letter must include brief reflections on the implementation of this behavioral genetics study. For instance, you could reflect on the choice of tasks that could be used to test pain, stress, or reward sensitivity. Alternatively, provide a brief sketch of an analysis plan for data extracted from suitable databases, ideas for statistical analysis comparing single-case/small-group mutation carriers to controls, or discuss a different aspect of the project that engages your curiosity.
What are we looking for in you?
- Strong motivation and organizational skills.
- Ability to think creatively within a scientific framework.
- Your personal suitability and motivation for the position, including enthusiasm, flexibility, curiosity, and a strong ability to collaborate as part of a larger research team.
- Previous research and interest in the above-mentioned themes, e.g. reward, stress, addiction, pain, opioids. Proven ability to work independently and efficiently on relevant research topics.
Employment in the position is based on a comprehensive assessment of all qualification requirements applicable to the position, including personal qualifications

About the DataMines Project
DataMines combines approaches from STS, critical data studies and political ecology, and develops “track and tracing” ethnographic methods to follow the flow of genetic resources across land, oceans, jurisdictions, and global databases. It builds on a collaboration between the University of Oslo, Fridtjof Nansens Institute and the University College London, and it brings together an interdisciplinary team of international scholars in Europe and Brazil. The project is led by Associate Professor Ana Delgado.
Biodiversity loss is a main global challenge. DataMines addresses it by studying how genetic resources are digitalized and increasingly stored in and retrieved from databases, often as open data. The project analyses the challenges that turning biodiversity into data poses for biodiversity governance. It focuses on bioprospecting, i.e. the search for commercially interesting forms of biochemistry nature. Using an ethnographic approach it follows specific forms of biodiversity (plants and microbes) in Brazil and Norway.
The digital shift in bioprospecting poses several challenges to existing regulatory mechanisms for the fair access and use of genetic resources. Genetic data on critical biodiversity resources accumulate in databases in the Global North, even when that data has been collected from organisms and microorganisms in megadiverse countries in the Global South.
The digitalization of bioprospecting, including the use of AI and datamining software to search for interesting sequences in databases, has opened up a new round of global controversies on genetic-resource extraction and exploitation, including what indigenous and activist groups see as a new form of digital biopiracy. A key problem is that regulatory and legal mechanisms are missing to regulate the flow of data, and to govern databases.
How does the governance of resource extractions change when the site of extraction is not only physical sites existing within national jurisdictions, but when resources also exist as data in databases and clouds? The project DataMines addresses this question, to produce theoretical and empirical knowledge that can be used to inform better policies, towards contributing to data sovereignty and environmental justice. You can read more about the project here: DataMines
