Hence, our research is often multidisciplinary and is frequently pursued in collaboration with external partners.
Our campus is located at the heart of the city of Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden. Since its inception, the university has played an important role in the transformation of Malmö from an industrial city to a centre of learning and innovation. About a third of our first year students have an international background, which is reflected in an increasingly international academic environment.
The Faculty of Culture and Society
The Faculty of Culture and Society is a multidisciplinary faculty that includes the School of Arts and Communication (K3), the Department of Global Political Studies, the Department of Urban Studies and the Department of Language and Linguistics.
Department of Global Political Studies (GPS)
The Department of Global Political Studies is a multidisciplinary research and teaching environment comprising seven subject areas: European Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Gender Studies, International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER), International Relations, Human Rights, and Political Science. The department’s degree programmes and research activities focus on global processes of change and the specific and evolving consequences for societies and individuals.
Research area Migration, Urbanisation and Societal Change (MUSA)
MUSA comprises the subjects International migration and ethnic relations (IMER) and Urban studies (US), at the Department of Global Political Studies and the Department of Urban Studies respectively.
Doctoral programme in International Migration and Ethnic relations (IMER)
IMER comprises studies of emigration, immigration and return. Scholars within IMER study, among other subjects, the national, regional, international and global causes and effects of migration in both the society of origin and destination on a structural, institutional, collective, and individual level.
IMER is an inherently multi- and interdisciplinary subject, in which for instance sociology, political science, cultural geography, anthropology, economic history, economics, social work, history, ethnology, religious studies, gender studies, and cultural studies are represented. For the general study plan for the doctoral programme in IMER.
The aim of the programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the doctoral student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the chosen subject area. The doctoral programme comprises 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is completed when the doctoral student publicly defends his/her printed doctoral dissertation.
Employment as a doctoral student
An employed doctoral student shall primarily devote time to his/her own research education. Decisions regarding employment of doctoral students can be found in the Swedish National Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 §§. The doctoral student is expected to actively participate in the research and teaching environment and might have up to 20 per cent departmental duties, such as teaching.
Eligibility requirements
The general requirements for third-cycle (doctoral) education are that the student has:
1) received a second-cycle higher education degree;
2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle; or
3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.
Specific requirements
• A second-cycle degree in IMER or in another subject relevant to IMER.
• Ability to express oneself in written and spoken English is essential.
Basis of assessment
The assessment is based on the general and specific eligibility requirements (above).
Further, according to the Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student’s ability to benefit from doctoral courses and study programmes. The quality of the applicant’s research plan, along with scientific publications and other texts, are important indicators of this ability. The research plan should have a clear and well-justified methodology and we encourage applicants with all kinds of methodological approaches. The assessment will also be based on how well the research plan relates to relevant themes within IMER.
