About the position

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year position as PhD research fellow in Environmental Radioactivity/ Radiochemistry/Ecotoxicology

Knowledge of radionuclide behavior in the environment is fundamental for minimizing its potential impact on humans and the environment. This project aims to identify and characterize radionuclide transfer and bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms in combination with chemical stressors and under ecologically relevant exposure scenarios.

The PhD position is funded by the Research Council of Norway through the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC) which is an interdisciplinary collaboration between Norway’s leading research institutions within nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry: University of Oslo (UiO), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) as well as several associated partners (https://www.nnrc.uio.no/english/research-themes/rt-5/).

 

The PhD candidate will be part of a dynamic and productive academic team with a large international network covering several research disciplines. The successful candidate will also be able to work closely with NNRC partners.

Main tasks

The main tasks of the PhD position are to:

  • Improve our understanding of the exposure, uptake and excretion of multiple stressors (radionuclides, metals and organic compounds) in aquatic organisms. 
  • To experimentally evaluate the role of speciation and bioavailability as well as toxicokinetics during combined exposure to multiple stressors in aquatic organisms.
  • Assess interactions between radionuclides and other chemical contaminants during combined exposure 

The work will include:

  • Conducting exposure experiments to characterize uptake and bioaccumulation of radionuclides and chemical contaminants separately and/or in combination in aquatic organisms.
  • Performing speciation and bioavailability studies in combination with in situ fractionation techniques to characterize exposure.
  • Carry out chemical analysis of radionuclides and chemical contaminants in various samples (water, biota and sediments). 
  • Assessing combined effects (toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic)  
  • Organization and analysis of data, writing and dissemination of results.

The successful candidate is expected to submit a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree within the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.


Competence

Required academic qualifications

  • A relevant master’s degree in environmental sciences, chemistry including radiochemistry and nuclear chemistry, ecotoxicology or similar

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

  • Experience with environmental radioactivity, inorganic environmental chemistry
  • Practical field or laboratory experience with studies on aquatic organisms
  • Experience with in situ fractionation, bioavailability assessment and/or speciation modelling
  • Experience with toxicokinetic assessments of contaminants in mixtures
  • Experience with organic environmental chemistry
  • Practical or theoretical experience with effect and biomarker assessment
  • Competence on ionizing radiation or radionuclides including radioanalytical techniques. For candidates without competence within ionizing radiation, a radiation protection course (e.g., the one given at MINA, NMBU) will be mandatory
  • Competence in statistics

You need to have:

  • Strong motivation for the PhD education and for the research project
  • Good social and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Have oral and written communication skills in English, and preferably in a Scandinavian language 
  • Dissemination skills

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in position code 1017 PhD Fellow (550 800 NOK). This is a temporary position with a duration of 3 years. Seniority promotion in the position. 

Admission to a PhD program is a prerequisite for appointment to the PhD scholarship position.

About the position

At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Department of Production Animal Medicine, Section for Small Ruminant Research and Herd Health in Sandnes, a PhD position is available within the project PIG-ART: Optimization of advanced assisted reproductive technologies in pigs. This is a recruitment position with a duration of 3 years. 

The project aims to further develop and optimize methods within assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in pigs, including Ovum Pick-Up (OPU), in vitro embryo production (IVEP), embryo transfer, and competence building within gene editing. The PhD candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary research environment with expertise in veterinary reproduction, embryo technology, surgery, and molecular biology. The project is carried out in collaboration with Norsvin SA, the Faculty of Biosciences (CIGENE) at NMBU, and the University of Murcia in Spain. 

The project includes both fieldwork and laboratory work at NMBU VET Sandnes (SEARCH) and NMBU Ås (CIGENE). A research stay at the University of Murcia is planned as part of the doctoral work.

The desired start date is 1 September 2026. The position will have its office location at the Section for Small Ruminant Research and Herd Health in Sandnes.

Main tasks

  • Competence building within gene editing of porcine oocytes and embryos

Competence

To be eligible for the position, the candidate must meet the requirements for admission to the PhD programme in Veterinary Science at NMBU. About the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

NMBU The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the country’s only veterinary educational institution and provides expertise in veterinary medicine and veterinary public health. The faculty educates veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and doctoral candidates in Veterinary Science and conducts research in veterinary medicine and related biomedical fields.   • Vous utiliserez vos compétences administratives ou logistiques pour soutenir différentes équipes au sein du Service Médical. Vos tâches varieront en fonction de votre travail au sein d'une équipe logistique médicale à Nivelles, mais tout tournera autour du "support". Vous effectuerez aussi bien de l'administration ou de la livraison de médicaments importants que du transport de gros équipements.
  • En tant que logisticien médical, vous gérerez également de l'équipement et des tentes et veillerez à ce que les fournitures les plus sensibles soient conditionnées de manière sûre et ordonnée. Cette tâche est essentielle pour assurer le bon déroulement des exercices et des opérations militaires. Il est possible que tu deviennes un expert dans la conduite de véhicules de transport nécessitant des permis de conduire C et CE, et apprendrez à travailler avec des équipements de levage (tels que des Manitou et des élévateurs). Vous contribuerez à garantir la bonne santé de l'ensemble de notre personnel.
  • En tant que support administratif, vous appuyez différents services spécialisés dans la gestion (personnel, dossiers, contrats) au sein de votre unité. Votre expertise est primordiale pour garantir le bon fonctionnement des tous nos collaborateurs.
  • Vous travaillerez quotidiennement avec des collègues au sein d'une ambiance collective où le soutient se doit d'être appliqué au mieux des possibilités. Etsimme Kemiönsaarelle varhaisjakajaa sekä vakituiseen työsuhteeseen että kesäsijaiseksi. Työ on sanomalehtien ja osoitteellisen postin jakelua aamuyöllä. Työt tehdään yrityksen jakeluautolla ja työvuorokierto on pääasiassa 6 yötä töitä ja 2 yötä vapaata. Työt alkavat klo 03 yöllä ja työaika on noin 3-4 tuntia yössä. Käytössämme on tuntipalkka, joka määräytyy Teollisuusliiton ja Medialiiton välisen jakelua koskevan työehtosopimuksen mukaan. Uuden jakajan keskimääräinen tuntiansio lisineen on noin 12-13 e/t. Työsuhteen aluksi saat palkallisen koulutuksen päivällä sekä opastuksen omille reiteillesi yöllä. Tarjoamme liikunnallisen ja itsenäisen työn, joka jättää päivät vapaaksi opiskelulle, harrastuksille tai elämästä nauttimiselle.
