Professor/Førsteamanuensis i maritim digitalisering
STUDENTPARLAMENTET UIT NORGES ARKTISKE UNIVERSITET

Programmet har to spesialiseringer:

  • akvakulturteknologi
  • maritim digitalisering.

Kandidaten vil ha ansvar for kurs innen denne spesialiseringen.

The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art at NTNU is excited to announce an opportunity for a 100% permanent position as Professor or Associate Professor with a focus on Speculative Materials. We are seeking applications from dedicated and qualified candidates who can help us develop and define the notion of speculative materials and push the academic boundaries through exploring materials as frameworks for societal re-imagination and transformation. An emerging field of artistic research, speculative materials investigate the notion of materials as active agents in shaping cultural, technological, and ecological futures. At the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, we are dedicated to shaping the roles and impact of artists in society. The successful candidate will thrive in an environment characterized by high ambitions, access to relevant networks and facilities, and a strong international reputation in artistic research.

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.

Duties of the position

The primary responsibilities include teaching, conducting artistic research, and fostering artistic development, collaboration, and new initiatives within the realm of speculative materials. The ideal candidate will be committed to exploring the potential of art and culture to drive societal transformation, working with academic colleagues both within and outside the department, as well as international public and private sector actors. They should show enthusiasm for relocating their professional activities to the art academy in Trondheim, Norway, enabling them to share their artistic research and production processes and outcomes with the University, its local contexts, and broader national and international networks.

About the position

Digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming society, and the integration of AI into the maritime industry represents a digital shift that will redefine today’s operations. The maritime industry is increasingly embracing AI, enabling a broad digital transformation. Data sharing between maritime stakeholders is a key enabler for accelerating the operationalization of AI across maritime value chains. This PhD project therefore calls for research on secure and trustworthy data sharing.

The development and refinement of maritime AI models depend on access to large amounts of high-quality operational data. However, data sharing across organisational and sectoral boundaries is often constrained by concerns related to data ownership, confidentiality, cybersecurity risks, and trust. These challenges represent barriers to the safe and responsible use of AI in the maritime domain.

This PhD project will investigate how cybersecurity risks influence data sharing for maritime AI model development. The project will have an interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from information security, maritime operations, data engineering, and data governance.

The research will include structured review of relevant literature, exploratory studies with industry partners and the development of methods or frameworks to support secure and trusted data sharing for maritime AI model development. Depending on the candidate’s background and the project’s progression, the research may include methods such as anomaly detection techniques or simulation-based testing.

This position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of cybersecurity, data sharing, and maritime AI in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The research outcomes are expected to contribute knowledge on cybersecurity-related barriers and frameworks to support secure and trustworthy data sharing across maritime AI use cases.

The center shall position the maritime sector for accelerated and successful use of AI. The demand for safe and sustainable maritime activities, as well as the shortage of crew and engineers, are key drivers for change in the maritime sector. At the
same time, there is a pull for growth, increased efficiency and profitability, while managing volatility in the markets. Moreover, the sector is critically important for global supply chains and security in a tense geopolitical situation. To demonstrate and prototype maritime AI solutions, the center will address a diverse and impactful set of use cases: Logistics, shipping and business transactions; Ship design and construction; Voyage planning and optimization; Condition monitoring and maintenance; Crew training; Maritime traffic and ship surveillance; Decarbonization and energy management; Autonomous ships and remote control.
