The pharmacoepidemiology group at Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine (CPPEM), Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, is looking for applicants for a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship.
Syddansk Universitet
Denmark, Odense M

The pharmacoepidemiology group at Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine (CPPEM), Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, is looking for applicants for a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship. The position is to be filled from June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is part of a newly funded research project aiming to understand long-term safety and beneficial effects of ADHD medication in children, adolescents and young adults as well geographical variation in access to support and diagnostic pathways.

Research environment
The PhD position is hosted within the pharmacoepidemiology research group at Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine, SDU. The PhD student will join an interdisciplinary and engaged research environment and supervisor team with expertise in pharmacoepidemiology, pediatrics and child and adolescent psychiatry. We combine clinical perspectives and data sources with advanced population-based research using nationwide health data to address key questions about utilization patterns, safety and benefits of ADHD medications in youth. Our group is collaborative, international, and dedicated to high scientific standards, while maintaining an open and informal atmosphere. We value curiosity, teamwork, and mutual support, and we take pride in creating a space where young researchers can develop their skills and thrive both scientifically and personally.

In daily work, the PhD student will report to medical doctor, PhD, Helene Kildegaard and professor Anton Pottegård, but he/she will also be expected to contribute to the whole research unit whose research areas span from pharmacoepidemiology to clinical studies, and cell-based basic pharmacology and environmental medicine.

Project description
ADHD is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses in childhood and is characterized by persistent difficulties with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. The condition can lead to significant challenges at school, at home, and in social relationships. In Denmark, around 5% of children and young people currently receive medication for ADHD—a proportion that has increased markedly over the past decade. Although many experience improvement in their symptoms, we still know far too little about how these medications affect children and adolescents in the long term. In particular, there is limited knowledge about the benefits and risks of treatment in real-world settings outside the short, controlled framework of clinical trials.

In this project, we will combine Danish and Norwegian health registers with school data, clinical assessments of symptoms, and information on municipal services. We will analyze how ADHD medication affects the risk of serious adverse outcomes such as cardiovascular disease, substance misuse, and impaired growth. At the same time, we will examine how medication influences children’s schooling, well-being, and symptom levels. Finally, we will map how access to non-pharmacological support—such as parent training and school-based assistance—varies across the country. The project will generate new knowledge about how ADHD medication works in real-life settings and will provide a stronger basis for decision-making for families, professionals, and policymakers.

Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy, and Environmental Medicine at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health, University of Southern Denmark, is offering a 3-year position within pharmacoepidemiology.
Syddansk Universitet
Denmark, Odense M

Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy, and Environmental Medicine at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health, University of Southern Denmark, is offering a 3-year position within pharmacoepidemiology. The position is to be filled from April 1st, 2026, or at the earliest convenient date thereafter.

The academic position
The successful candidate will work primarily within our portfolio of hypothesis-generating screening studies, a methodological portfolio where we identify signals of interest from large real-world register data to guide the conduct of further studies according to principles of causal inference.
The specific focus of this project is to find unsuspected associations between prescription drugs and hospitals contact for non-infectious liver injuries. We will use the world-class populations based Danish data resources of prescription drugs and hospital contacts. Findings from the Danish analyses will be validated by similar analyses in data from the US Veterans Affairs.
The position entails a visit or research stay with our American partners at Rutgers University in New Jersey, US. The successful candidate will be trained in advanced epidemiology.

Our department
The candidate will be part of the pharmacoepidemiological research group within the department of Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine (CPPEM).
The pharmacoepidemiology group is led by professors Jesper Hallas and Anton Pottegård. It comprises approx. 45 individuals and focuses on registry-based research covering all aspects of drug use, drug effects, and drug safety.
The group is highly regarded within pharmacoepidemiology and has a large international network. Furthermore, we collaborate extensively with other groups, including both clinical and basic pharmacology researchers as well as environmental medicine specialists.

The research interests of CPPEM span from pharmacoepidemiology to clinical studies and cell-based basic pharmacology and environmental medicine. Collectively, CPPEM has a strong track record in pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacogenetics, pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, therapeutic drug monitoring and exposure to environmental chemicals. Specifically, the pharmacoepidemiological research group utilizes the world-class Danish registries as well as international data sources to assess pharmacological questions in large populations.
The translational pharmacology group aims to understand variability in drug toxicity, drug metabolism and drug transport. Examples of this include cell-based models such as induced-pluripotent stem cells, primary human hepatocytes and clinical studies.
The environmental medicine group study the impact of early life exposures to environmental chemicals. In particular per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a main focus area, with studies of the adverse health effects of exposure, biomonitoring and advising national and international authorities.
The analytical chemistry laboratory measures concentrations of drugs or environmental chemicals in various matrices.

We offer an attractive and inspiring working environment with dedicated and highly skilled people. There is a formalized teaching program dedicated to methodological aspects of pharmacoepidemiological research.
As a department, we value having a pleasant and informal working environment across all job functions at the department. Further, attracting and training excellent young researchers is a priority, including internal training in not only methodology but also ‘soft skills’ covering topics such as dissemination, work planning, collaboration, work/life balance etc.

Qualifications
The applicant is required to be fluent in English (written and spoken), hold a degree within epidemiology, statistics or a health-related discipline and have a track-record within the field of observational research, preferably within pharmacoepidemiology. Further experience with data science or AI will be preferred.

Further, the candidate should contribute to a positive and constructive working environment by active participation and be open to interdisciplinary work across the width of the department and its collaborators.
