Our section is working on understanding the dynamical evolution of the hazardous space radiation environment and developing tools for the prediction of the adverse effects of the space environment utilising satellite observations, physics-based numerical models, machine learning, and data assimilation. Our research will help safely design and operate satellites and maintain ground networks. We try to bridge our theoretical studies with high-performance tools that can be used in science, predictions, and applications.
We are looking for one PhD student to join our team! The successful candidate should have strong experience in data analysis, scientific programming, and statistical or signal processing methods. Job responsibilities will include a variety of tasks related to ionospheric research, scientific programming, and data science, including but not limited to:
Your responsibilities:
- Process, validate, and analyse large-scale GNSS-TEC time series, including advanced data cleaning, simulation of observational errors, and the integration of auxiliary data (e.g., global earthquake catalogues, GNSS metadata, and solar/geomagnetic indices)
- Investigate ionospheric TEC anomalies to robustly distinguish coseismic disturbances from natural variability, utilising statistical analysis, spectral methods, and function approximation techniques to quantify coseismic acoustic wave parameters
- Develop scientific visualisations of the results
- Conduct scientific research in the field of space physics
- Attend scientific meetings, including international conferences, and present results
- Write and submit scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals

Project Iso-Orbi: Using high-resolution mass spectrometry for simultaneous multi-element stable isotope analysis of fatty acids in a paleoclimate context
The position is part of the Iso-Orbi project, which is funded by GFZ household funds. Stable isotope analysis of individual organic molecules is typically performed by gas chromatographic separation, followed by combustion and mass spectrometry of the resulting gases, where one isotope system is analysed at a time. In this project, the candidate will use high-resolution mass spectrometry to study the compound-specific stable oxygen isotopic composition (d18O) of isolated lipids and to assess the practicality of simultaneously analysing the stable isotope composition of multiple element systems (carbon, oxygen, hydrogen). While a first instrumental method has been established, the candidate will start by refining/improving the latter in parallel to extensive validation of wet-chemical workup procedures. This is followed by application to lake and marine sediments to evaluate fatty acid d18O patterns across climate transitions and to systematically assess lipid d18O information in the context of vital effects. The project requires a keen interest in both mass spectrometry and paleoclimatology.

Recent progress in broadband, coherent sources of ultrashort mid-infrared (MIR) pulses and electric-field-resolved spectroscopy (FRS) has opened up a vast potential for new applications of vibrational fingerprinting to high-throughput classification of biological systems1. At the Laboratory of Lightwave Metrology (http://lightwavelab.de/) the candidate will join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team, developing MIR-FRS technology toward its application to real-life biomedical settings. The candidate will work at the Leibniz-IPHT on the development of a new generation of ultracompact FRS instrumentation and be in charge of its deployment at the intensive care unit of the Jena university hospital. The affiliation with the Field-Resolved Optical Precision Metrology Group within the Spectroscopy and Imaging Department at the Leibniz-IPHT and the close proximity to the Fiber and Waveguide Lasers Group at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena will provide access to state-of-the-art laser laboratories and cutting-edge infrared vibrational spectroscopy techniques1,2,3. The position is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant “LIVE – Laser-Based Infrared Vibrational Electric-Field Fingerprinting” and is furthermore affiliated with the DFG Cluster of Excellence "Balance of the Microverse (https://www.microverse-cluster.de/en/) ". We are interested in the physical relationship between magmatic/volcanic processes and earthquakes, and in the transport of crustal fluids to better understand seismicity, earthquake swarms, and the degassing of mantle-derived CO₂. In the context of the Czech-German INTERREG cross-border project “Sustainable Trans-Border Geothermal Development and Geohazards Monitoring' - "TransGeo" (https://www.sn-cz2027.eu/de/projekte/prioritat-2-klimawandel-und-nachhaltigkeit/100789750_transgeo) , we are looking for a research scientist with experience in seismic data acquisition, automatic processing of large waveform datasets, and waveform-based analysis of earthquake sources towards geological structural analysis for deep geothermal prospection.
During the project, we will conduct high-precision seismicity studies to identify active faults and potential zones for geothermal exploration. Our university partners will complement this passive seismic imaging by carrying out a high-resolution reflection seismic experiment. Throughout these efforts, outreach activities and close contact with local stakeholders and the population remain important components of the project.

- Contribution to the maintenance, installation and processing of a Large-N seismic network, including data and metadata quality control
- Participation in regular consortium and working group meetings
- Preparation, co-coordination and participation in public science events to inform the locals about the geology and the project, including the preparation of information materials

Your Tasks
For talents with an entrepreneurial mindset and the courage to shape the future, the "Start up!" trainee program offers 18 months of space to learn and develop. We provide you with a wide range of insights into our organization and the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and explore new topics to reach your full potential.
Additionally, We Offer You:
- Take Charge of Your Career! You will have five project assignments: the first within Technology & Innovation. After that, you can choose your subsequent projects individually – across the entire company.
- Step Out of Your Comfort Zone! After your first assignment, you decide which topics you want to dive deeper into. During the program, we want you to step out of your comfort zone and explore new fields within Deutsche Telekom. We will support you with a broad network.
- Expand Your Network and Experience the Trainee Community! Fridays are reserved for the “Magenta Friday". All trainees come together to work on strategic, innovative growth topics outside of their own project assignments. Trainees work in different teams where they organize events, foster their development, or contribute to social initiatives.
- Go International! A leading digital telecommunications company without international experience? Never! One of your (three-month) assignments will be abroad. You decide which country and city.
- Understand Our Business! Take the opportunity to get to know Deutsche Telekom’s operational business. During our "Service Days," you can gain direct insights into how Deutsche Telekom works with customers. Choose your "Service Days", such as a day in customer service, a visit to a T-Shop, or a stop at one of our service centers. You’ll gain direct insights into how we turn customers into fans every day.
- Choose Your Start Date! Every quarter, there is the opportunity to start the program. Simply discuss with your contact person which date suits you best.
Your Profile
You have successfully completed a degree in economics, business administration, IT, Sales, Marketing or a comparable field of study – all degree levels (bachelor's, master's, doctorate) are welcome. You possess strong customer and service orientation.
You bring the following skills and qualifications:
- Service Orientation: You have a pronounced service mindset and strive to meet our customers' needs in the best possible way.
- Relevant Experience: You have accumulated at least 6 months of relevant internships or work experience in areas such as service, business clients, private clients, or data-related environments.
- Project Management, Consultancy: You have knowledge and initial experience in project management and/or management consultancy and are capable of effectively planning, coordinating, and successfully completing projects.
- Trends: You follow current trends and developments in the industry and bring fresh ideas and approaches to our projects and products.
- Sales and Marketing Experience: You have practical experience in sales and/or marketing. This enables you to understand customer needs, craft effective marketing strategies, and contribute to the development and execution of successful sales initiatives.
- Intercultural Competence: Our Start up! community thrives on its international diversity. Therefore, strong intercultural skills should be part of your DNA. International experience – whether through studying abroad, work & travel, etc. – is therefore a must.
- Social Engagement: As a Start up! trainee, you are passionate about driving change! Experience in social engagement and/or entrepreneurial projects is highly welcomed.
- Language Skills: You are fluent in English (C1 level) and are willing to learn German independently.
