PhD Research Fellowship in Science & Technology Studies
DET SAMFUNNSVITENSKAPELIGE FAKULTET
Norway, OSLO

About the position

One PhD Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Science & Technology Studies (STS) is available at TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture at the University of Oslo (UiO) from August 2026.

Candidates are invited to apply for a three-year PhD Research Fellowship associated with the DataMines project (Governing data infrastructure and clouds in digitally mediated natural resource extraction and exploitation).

The position is for three years, with the possibility of extension for teaching activities.

The successful PhD candidate will define and carry out an individual subproject on the politics of bioprospecting in Norway, with a focus on legal and scientific practices. More information about the project is available in the project’s website and upon request ana.delgado@tik.uio.no

The appointed candidate will be part of the TIK Centre’s STS research group. The STS group at TIK analyses the relations between science, technology and society; how scientific knowledge and technologies emerge and how science and technology are employed in different social contexts, and with what social and political implications.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program (TIK track) and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. For more information, please see the Faculty of Social Sciences’ web site.

In addition to their own research work, fellows may be invited to participate in teaching and/or administration activities connected to research and teaching in the programs offered at the Centre. All such work will be compensated with an equivalent extension of the research fellowship.

About the DataMines Project

DataMines combines approaches from STS, critical data studies and political ecology, and develops “track and tracing” ethnographic methods to follow the flow of genetic resources across land, oceans, jurisdictions, and global databases. It builds on a collaboration between the University of Oslo, Fridtjof Nansens Institute and the University College London, and it brings together an interdisciplinary team of international scholars in Europe and Brazil. The project is led by Associate Professor Ana Delgado.

Biodiversity loss is a main global challenge. DataMines addresses it by studying how genetic resources are digitalized and increasingly stored in and retrieved from databases, often as open data. The project analyses the challenges that turning biodiversity into data poses for biodiversity governance. It focuses on bioprospecting, i.e. the search for commercially interesting forms of biochemistry nature. Using an ethnographic approach it follows specific forms of biodiversity (plants and microbes) in Brazil and Norway.

The digital shift in bioprospecting poses several challenges to existing regulatory mechanisms for the fair access and use of genetic resources. Genetic data on critical biodiversity resources accumulate in databases in the Global North, even when that data has been collected from organisms and microorganisms in megadiverse countries in the Global South.

The digitalization of bioprospecting, including the use of AI and datamining software to search for interesting sequences in databases, has opened up a new round of global controversies on genetic-resource extraction and exploitation, including what indigenous and activist groups see as a new form of digital biopiracy. A key problem is that regulatory and legal mechanisms are missing to regulate the flow of data, and to govern databases.

How does the governance of resource extractions change when the site of extraction is not only physical sites existing within national jurisdictions, but when resources also exist as data in databases and clouds? The project DataMines addresses this question, to produce theoretical and empirical knowledge that can be used to inform better policies, towards contributing to data sovereignty and environmental justice. You can read more about the project here: DataMines

PhD Research Fellow in Special Needs Education, Educational Psychology, Education and Psychology
UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

Job description

Applicants are invited to apply for a three- to four-year full-time PhD Research Fellow position at the Centre for Research on Equality in Education (CREATE), University of Oslo, Norway.

The position has a double affiliation with the Centre for Research on Equality in Education (CREATE) and the Department of Special Needs Education. The main workplace will be CREATEs premises at the University of Oslo.

CREATE is an interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway (2023-2033) with the objective to generate novel knowledge about how to reduce inequalities in education. The interdisciplinary centre integrates researchers with substantive expertise from education, special education, psychology, sociology, economics, and genetics, and methodological expertise from educational measurement, psychometrics, econometrics, statistics, and biostatistics. The Research Fellowship is associated with CREATE’s research strand 2: “Intervening on the barriers to equality in education”.

The Department of Special Needs Education offers a Bachelor’s degree in special needs education and five special education majors (speech and language therapy, hearing, language and communication, specific learning difficulties, psycho-social difficulties, and neurodevelopmental disorders) at the Master’s level, in addition to an international Master’s program (Master in Special Needs Education). The department’s lab, Oslo Special Education and Learning Lab (Oslo SpeLL) offers an excellent possibility to incorporate research, innovation and student activities into a clinical context.

More about the position

The PhD Fellow is expected to pursue quantitative research in line with the aims of CREATE’s research strand 2: 1) to develop and examine effects from reliable, durable, and educationally meaningful interventions addressing the barriers to equality in skill development, and 2) to design theoretically oriented experiments to examine the causal mechanisms that operate in interventions. CREATE focuses on oral language, literacy (reading and writing), and mathematics as fundamental skills critical to educational success. The current position is tied to one of two planned randomized controlled trials that will test the effects of interventions for upper primary school children (5th -7th grade). The first intervention concerns argumentative writing skills and will be delivered in a whole classroom setting. The writing intervention will focus on skills such as audience design, arguments and counterarguments, connectors, and text revision. The second intervention concerns mathematical skills and targets students who struggle with basic arithmetic. The mathematics intervention will focus on strengthening whole-number skills and developing fraction understanding, which are essential for later mathematical learning.

As part of the work on these intervention studies, the PhD candidate is expected to contribute to the administration and implementation, including the development of intervention materials, assessment tools, the coordination of research assistants and data collection.

The PhD candidate is expected to work with the interdisciplinary team in CREATE’s strand 2 and will have the opportunity to define and pursue their own research interests within the scope of CREATE’s research aims and the planned intervention studies.

The appointment is a full-time position for a period of three years. If there is a good match between the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs at the Department of Special Needs Education the position may be extended to four years, 25 percent of which will be devoted to teaching, supervision, and research assistance.

The Research Fellow must take part in the faculty’s approved PhD program, and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

For more information, please see our web site

PhD positions

The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen invites applications for two PhD fellowships in Social Anthropology. The positions are fully funded by the European Research Council (ERC) through the project GENMAR (2026–2031). The successful candidate’s PhD project must therefore make a clear and substantial contribution to the themes and objectives of GENMAR.

Prospective candidates must present a project proposal ethnographically situated in either Brazil, Tanzania or Thailand. Further instructions about the project proposal are outlined below.

About the project/work tasks:

The GENMAR-project will advance empirical and theoretical knowledge about why and how women are continuously marginalized in the fishery sector.

Current research shows that fisherwomen’s roles and contributions are not only habitually underrecognized, but they are also often excluded from governance- and management processes and lack social and economic rights. However, we know little about how gender equality policies- and recommendations in fishery are negotiated through political- and advocacy systems. Further, in the face of increased attention to the issue, little is known of where and why it loses momentum in political systems. Moreover, women’s role and agency in fishery politics, advocacy and governance is an understudied field, offering limited knowledge of how and why their struggles are hindered.

GENMAR’s research objective is situated at the intersection of these three knowledge gaps. The project will develop a multi-sited, multi-scalar, comparative and theorized ethnography of gender inequality, gender advocacy and gender policies in fisheries in Spain, Brazil, Tanzania and Thailand, and a case study of fishery policy in the EU-commission and the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Theoretically, the project draws on the existing literature about the gendering of fisheries, in dialogue with gender studies, social science concept analysis, legal anthropology and anthropological approaches to the state, organizations, law and policy. Methodologically, the project draws on ethnographic fieldwork, extended interviews, focus groups, document- and media studies and law- and policy analysis.

The project’s PI is Associate Professor Iselin Åsedotter Strønen. For more information about the project, see https://www4.uib.no/en/research/research-projects/invisible-women-of-the-sea-gendering-fishery-politics-and-advocacy-genmar

Responsibilites:

  • Pursue a PhD project that directly contributes to GENMARs project’s focus on gender and fisheries at the local, regional, national and international level
  • Collaborate actively with the GENMAR project team in developing innovative and ambitious lines of inquiry, joint research questions, literature reviews and theoretical frameworks
  • Conduct ethnographic field research for approximately one year in the course of the project period.
  • Actively participate in research, publication, and dissemination activities of GENMAR
  • Write a PhD-dissertation and at least one book chapter
  • Present research at departmental seminars, project workshops and conferences, and international conferences
  • Follow the highest standards of data management and ethical protocols and procedures in alignment with ERC requirements
  • Obtaining research permits when/if required, contribute to updating the project website and to communicating research findings to the public when appropriate

Qualifications and personal qualities:

Required qualifications

  • The applicant must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in social or cultural anthropology (thesis must be approved by the deadline)
  • The requirements are generally a grade B or better on the Master thesis and for the master's degree in total
  • A documented research trajectory reflecting the thematic and/or theoretical focus of GENMAR. Documented research experience with the gendering of fisheries is an advantage but is not an absolute requirement.
  • Ethnographic research experience from the country/region where ethnographic research is proposed conducted
  • In-depth knowledge of qualitative methods and documented experience with long-term, independent ethnographic field research.
  • Language skills enabling ethnographic fieldwork in candidates’ proposed research site (Brazil, Tanzania or Thailand).
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate clearly
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken)
  • The place of work for this position is Bergen, and the work requires that you are physically present at the Department of Social Anthropology on a daily basis (excluding fieldwork)

Desired qualifications

  • A publication track record beyond MA thesis
  • Prior experience in large research projects and/or prior experience from working in academia in educational/institutional/organizational roles
  • Experience with research communication to an academic and/or public audience

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.

About the PhD positions:

The duration of the PhD position is 3 years. In addition, to finish a book chapter for the project’s final publication output, the candidates will get the opportunity to be hired as researchers for a period of 3 months. For one of the positions there may be opportunities for teaching or other academic duty work, but this is agreed upon at a later stage.

About the PhD training:

As a PhD research fellow, you will take part in the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, UiB. The programme corresponds to a period of three years and leads to the PhD degree. To be eligible for admission you must normally have an educational background corresponding to a master’s degree with a scope of 120 ECTS credits, which builds on a bachelor’s degree with a scope of 180 ECTS credits (normally 2 + 3 years), or an integrated master’s degree with a scope of 300 ECTS credits (5 years). Master’s degrees must normally include an independent work of a minimum of 30 ECTS credits.
