About the position
The Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages (ILOS) at the University of Oslo is announcing a Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) affiliated with the research project NxtGenFake. The project examines how generative artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models, affects the production, dissemination, and understanding of digital content that may challenge democratic values and public trust.
More about the NxtGenFake project and the position
The NxtGenFake project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, investigates how large language models shape political narratives and strategic communication in digital environments. The project focuses on so-called disinformation narratives, meaning narratives of a misleading or inaccurate nature. Large language models enable the production of synthetic content at scale, potentially flooding information ecosystems with text that is difficult to distinguish from human-generated material. At the same time, large language models are increasingly being used for information retrieval, which may amplify the spread of biased or inaccurate representations.
A particular focus of the project is how such models—trained on large datasets including social media—may reproduce disinformation narratives from actors such as Russia and China, and influence public opinion in democratic societies, including Norway. The project analyzes how these disinformation narratives emerge, spread, and affect public discourse.
We are now seeking a motivated and skilled Doctoral Research Fellow to contribute to the NxtGenFake project, preferably with experience in handling and analyzing large datasets, and a willingness to collaborate interdisciplinarily with other project participants in studies and publications.
Applicants are required to upload/attach a research proposal (hf.uio.no) stating research questions and theoretical and methodological approaches.
The person appointed will be affiliated with the faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate will be part of the NxtGenFake project and contribute to its development. Read more about the Doctoral degree: PhD in the Humanities (hf.uio.no).
The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant (hf.uio.no).
The start-up date is estimated to 1 October 2026.

About the DataMines Project
DataMines combines approaches from STS, critical data studies and political ecology, and develops “track and tracing” ethnographic methods to follow the flow of genetic resources across land, oceans, jurisdictions, and global databases. It builds on a collaboration between the University of Oslo, Fridtjof Nansens Institute and the University College London, and it brings together an interdisciplinary team of international scholars in Europe and Brazil. The project is led by Associate Professor Ana Delgado.
Biodiversity loss is a main global challenge. DataMines addresses it by studying how genetic resources are digitalized and increasingly stored in and retrieved from databases, often as open data. The project analyses the challenges that turning biodiversity into data poses for biodiversity governance. It focuses on bioprospecting, i.e. the search for commercially interesting forms of biochemistry nature. Using an ethnographic approach it follows specific forms of biodiversity (plants and microbes) in Brazil and Norway.
The digital shift in bioprospecting poses several challenges to existing regulatory mechanisms for the fair access and use of genetic resources. Genetic data on critical biodiversity resources accumulate in databases in the Global North, even when that data has been collected from organisms and microorganisms in megadiverse countries in the Global South.
The digitalization of bioprospecting, including the use of AI and datamining software to search for interesting sequences in databases, has opened up a new round of global controversies on genetic-resource extraction and exploitation, including what indigenous and activist groups see as a new form of digital biopiracy. A key problem is that regulatory and legal mechanisms are missing to regulate the flow of data, and to govern databases.
How does the governance of resource extractions change when the site of extraction is not only physical sites existing within national jurisdictions, but when resources also exist as data in databases and clouds? The project DataMines addresses this question, to produce theoretical and empirical knowledge that can be used to inform better policies, towards contributing to data sovereignty and environmental justice. You can read more about the project here: DataMines

Complex organic molecules, e.g. sugars and amino acids, discovered in interstellar space are believed to originate from reactions taking place at nanoscale dust grain catalysts. Primarily, these grains are made up of Mg- or Fe-rich silicates or carbon-based materials. In cold and dense gas clouds, the grains are increasingly covered with ices of molecules such as water, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, which may impact their reactivity.
In this postdoc project, the successful applicant will employ ab initio methods to study reactions towards complex organic molecules. The chosen reactions will be guided by experimental results from collaborators in the Center for Interstellar Catalysis. It will also be possible to pursue more independent theory-driven projects, including the development of new theoretical methods. In the group, we have extensive experience with machine learning (ML) methods, and it will be possible to include these approaches in the work. The ML methods could include approaches to accelerate structure optimization or the calculation of binding energies, diffusion and reaction barriers through ML interatomic potentials.
The project will be physically anchored at the Center for Interstellar Catalysis at Aarhus University in Denmark and will take place in close collaboration with partners engaged in computational modelling and simulations, laboratory experiments and astrochemical observations. Visits to partners in Leiden are anticipated.
You can learn more about InterCat here, Mie Andersen’s group here and Thanja Lamberts’s group here.
Starting date and period
The starting date is flexible, from August 2026 onward. The duration of the employment is two years.
Academic qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in physics, chemistry, nanoscience or related. Previous experience with ab initio calculations in astrochemistry or physical chemistry is required. Experience with programming in Python and/or ML methods will be considered a plus.
Personal qualifications
The ability to work in teams as well as proficient oral and written communication skills (in English) are required.
The Center for Interstellar Catalysis brings together research teams within theory, laboratory experiments and observational astrochemistry situated at Aarhus University and Copenhagen University in Denmark and Leiden University in the Netherlands.
You will become part of a highly collaborative, supportive and international research environment that welcomes new ideas.
