We conduct integrative geobiodiversity research with the aim of understanding nature in all its complexity and diversity in order to preserve it as the foundation of life for future generations and to ensure its sustainable use. Across eight institutes and five research stations throughout Germany, scientists from more than 40 countries conduct research at the highest international level. The city of Frankfurt, where the Senckenberg Society was originally founded, hosts the organization’s central administrative services along with two research institutes housing extensive scientific collections and one of Senckenberg’s most renowned institutions, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum Frankfurt. Senckenberg is as much a part of the city’s identity as its skyline and its traditional apple wine. Within the framework of the project "SCRE3NED: Senckenberg Collection's RarEst – 3-dimensioNal Enhanced Digitisation", type specimens of exceptional scientific value (holotypes, paratypes and lectotypes) from various collections of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt (amber, extant and fossil mammals, Messel fossils) are digitised using micro-computed tomography (μCT), synchrotron radiation-based micro-computed tomography (SRμCT), and digital photography. The aim is to produce high-quality, standardised and FAIR-compliant 2D and 3D datasets for research, collection management and science communication. Job description: The PhD candidate is expected to join us to work on the research project “Light-driven microdrones”, which is based on the collaboration between Dr. Xiaofei Wu at Leibniz-IPHT and Prof. Bert Hecht at University of Würzburg. Light-driven microdrones are micrometer-sized robots actuated by multiple independent optical nanomotors, which generate thrusts upon light illumination. Up to date, we have developed microdrones working in a plane with full and independent controls in all 3 degrees of freedom of 2D motions, which is a breakthrough for light-driven robotic devices (see https://communities.springernature.com/posts/light-driven-microdrones-a-new-level-of-optical-manipulation). We are now aiming to extend the operation space of the microdrones to 3D. The two PhD candidates at Leibniz-IPHT and University of Würzburg will work together to achieve this goal by fulfilling a few challenging tasks. Once the whole microdrone system is established, we will perform experiments to showcase the great potential of the microdrones for future applications. The current idea is to do tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) of cells or similar specimens. Your field of activity includes: - Use numerical simulations (FDTD, COMSOL, deep learning) to design efficient nanomotors of the microdrones for 3D control - Develop microfluidic chips as experimental platform of the microdrones. Fabricate the microfluidic chips using photolithography and 3D nano/microprinting (e.g. Nanoscribe). - Contribute to fabrications of the microdrones using FIB, EBL, transfer, etc. - Conduct the experiments of TERS on biological specimens Qualification: - Master’s degree or equivalent in physics or related fields (such as biophotonics, nanotechnology). Design and execute experiments, interpret complex results, and derive actionable insights from data sets to optimize manufacturing processes and achieve precision control at atomic levels. 2. Apply statistical process control methods to establish and sustain robust and stable manufacturing processes. 3. Qualify and sustain manufacturing processes to support capacity expansion while maintaining speed, stability, and quality. 4. Collaborate effectively with equipment and material suppliers and internal engineering partners to identify technology gaps, process limitations, and improvement opportunities, and evaluate sustainable solutions. 5. Support manufacturing operations in a 24/7 high-volume semiconductor manufacturing environment, including scheduled evening shifts, weekend support, on-duty, and on-call responsibilities based on business needs. Profile 1. Legally eligible to work in Germany. 2. Available for approximately one year of on-the-job training in Taiwan. 3. Open for scheduled and occasional shift work, on call duty. 4. Degree in electronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanics, mechatronics, material engineering, or an equivalent field. 5. Practical experience in a mechanical or equipment-related field. 6. Understanding of technical documentation and schematics. 7. Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing is a plus. 8. Fluent in English with good command of German. 9. Hands-on working attitude with an open mindset. 10. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 11. Able to perform physical work on tools in a cleanroom environment. Important Candidate Information: Start Date: This role is planned to commence on October 1, 2026, in Dresden. Onboarding and International Training: The first month of your employment will be spent in Dresden. Following this initial onboarding, training, and integration with your new team members, you will travel to Taiwan for a one-year on-the-job training and knowledge transfer program. Your training in Taiwan will involve close collaboration with experienced TSMC engineering teams. You may also receive additional training and support at TSMC’s state-of-the-art Newcomer Training Center in Taichung. Training Logistics: For employees requiring accommodation during the first month in Dresden, and who reside more than 90 minutes away, ESMC will organize appropriate temporary lodging. This provision does not apply to employees who establish a residential address in Dresden (e.g., to expedite work permit procedures away from their original place of residence) or who terminate a personal lease contract in Dresden prior to their planned departure to Taiwan. Furthermore, ESMC will organize and provide air and ground transportation from Dresden to Taichung (Taiwan) and back at the conclusion of the training.
