About the position

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Conservation and Heritage Management is available at the Museum of Cultural History for a period of three years.

The position is part of the project MORE: Museum objects and reconciliation ethics, funded by the Research Council of Norway, and we are looking for a talent in conservation and heritage management. The position requires a Master's degree in conservation, collections management, museums and heritage, or related disciplines. 

For the PhD project, we encourage research focused on the implementation of Sámi knowledge and traditions in the management and care of cultural heritage treated with pesticides. Key concepts include ethical and culturally sensitive issues, material knowledge, community use, health and safety, terminology, and other.

We expect that the candidate will participate in international networks which discuss Indigenous approaches to pesticide issues and collections care.

The place of work is the Department of Ethnography, Numismatics, Classical Archaeology and University History.

The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The research fellow will be enrolled in the PhD programme at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo and is expected to complete the project within the three-year period.

The applicants must fulfil the requirements for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, and will be responsible for applying for admission within the given deadlines. A final plan for the researcher education programme must be approved and agreed upon no later than three months after the starting date.

More about the project and the position

The Museum objects and reconciliation ethics project (MORE) is funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is led by Professor Gro Birgit Ween.

MORE follows up on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's report from 2023. As state memory institutions, museums are important sites for reconciliatory exercises. In the museum, repatriation is a central reconciliatory measure. In the period 2012-2019, a collaboration consisting of 6 Sámi museum units and the capital museums Norsk Folkemuseum STI and the Museum of Cultural History (MCH), returned half of the latter's Sámi collections. The repatriation was named Bååstede, meaning ‘Homecoming’ in Southern Sámi. In MORE, the collaboration between the Bååstede parties continues between Sámi museums all over the Norwegian side of Sápmi: Saemien Sijte, Várdobáiki, Árran Lule Sámi Centre, Centre for Northern Peoples, Tana and Varanger Museum Siida, Riddoduottarmuseat, Sámi Museum Association, MCH and SNFM in Oslo. We are proud that Finnish Giellagas Institute for Sámi Studies at the University of Oulu is a partner in the project, along with the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari, and the Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum in Jokkmokk, on the Finnish and Swedish sides of Sápmi. 

In the context of reconciliation, a repatriation is the beginning rather than the end of a process. On the premises of Sámi museums, and with the help of Sámi methodologies, MORE investigates how the consequences of the capital museums' management of Sámi artifacts can be remedied. Sámi scholar Liisa-Ravna Finbog writes that the opposite of assimilation, is that Sámi museums operate according to cultural values and practices. A key termin Sámi museum methodology is rematriation, describing activities designed to bring formerly Norwegianized museum objects back to life. MORE explores 3 post-repatriation initiatives: We ask, what efforts are necessary to enable collections with 1. their pesticides, 2. their collection histories, and 3, and alienated objects, to again become part of a living Sámi culture. 

Based on existing partnerships, between Sámi museum institutions from across Sápmi, duojarat and other Sámi experts, as well as Sámi and non-Sámi conservators, anthropologists, archaeologists and museum researchers and workers, MORE seeks to jointly create insights and experiences that have value both for the museums, but also for our ongoing state reconciliation work.

The Phd candidate will be employed in WP1, Decolonization of Collections. This WP, led by Dr. Susan Braovac, will provide a general overview of pesticides present on selected groups of objects, repatriated in the Bååstede project to six Sámi museums. This post-repatriation work intends to provide support to Sámi museums which have received potentially contaminated and toxic objects. It will compare known object- and pesticide-histories to concrete results from chemical analyses. Based on these results, WP1 will develop recommendations for safe handling and study. The knowledge generated will be shared with the PhD candidate, who will be a team member in WP1. The PhD will be supervised by WP leader Susan Braovac, Sámi experts, and Dr. Torunn Klokkernes.

For the PhD project, we encourage research focused on the implementation of Sámi knowledge and traditions in the management and care of cultural heritage treated with pesticides. Key concepts include ethical and culturally sensitive issues, material knowledge, community use, health and safety, terminology, and other. 

Potential research topics could cover, but are not limited to:

  • Identification and development of culturally appropriate mitigation methods for pesticide-containing Sámi objects. This may include the exploration of new methods such as vacuum drying or heat treatments, etc.
  • Establishment of protocols /procedures for handling toxic artefacts/collections which align with Sámi perspectives.
  • Tracing object stories / collection stories to identify what they have been exposed to, how have they changed and the barriers (and potential solutions) to their use within future Sámi custodianship.
  • Creating alternative realms of interaction if collections remain contaminated; are there other possible routes for meaningful connection with contaminated collections? (3D scanning, printing, other).

Qualification requirements 

  • A master's degree or equivalent in conservation, collections management, heritage management, or related disciplines
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

To be admitted to the PhD programmes at the University of Oslo, an applicant must have a five year master's degree or equivalent studies that have been recognized by the faculty as forming a sufficient basis for admission.

To be employed as a PhD Research Fellow, admission to a doctoral program is required, or there must be a binding agreement for admission. Normally, one must apply for admission to a PhD programme within 3 months after the start of the research project leading to the PhD degree.

About the position

We invite applications for a 3-year Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on mathematical optimization for the design and operation of large-scale circular supply chains. The position is part of the research project FOOD2FEED – Transforming Food Waste into Sustainable Feed through Circular Logistics and Insect Bioconversion.

The successful candidate will develop advanced decision-support models for network design and reverse logistics to enable cost-efficient and scalable systems that utilize food loss and waste as inputs in circular value chains.

The position is based at NTNU’s campus in Trondheim, Norway, within the Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research (BEDØK) group at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management. BEDØK is Norway’s leading academic environment in operations research, logistics, and quantitative decision support, with strong publication activity and extensive collaboration with industry and public sector partners.

The purpose of a postdoctoral position is to develop a strong research profile and competence that qualifies for an academic career at the Associate Professor level or other advanced research positions.


About the research project 

Global food systems face major sustainability challenges: approximately one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted, while food production contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. FOOD2FEED aims to transform food loss and waste side streams (FLWS) into valuable resources by developing circular supply chains that convert waste into sustainable livestock feed through insect bioconversion.

The project brings together research partners NTNU, SINTEF Ocean, and Wageningen University & Research with leading industry partners such as Norsk Kylling (poultry producer and feed user), Bama (fruit/vegetable supplier) and NorInsect (insect protein producer). A central challenge is to design efficient reverse logistics systems that ensure reliable, cost-effective, and scalable collection, processing, and utilization of heterogeneous and uncertain waste streams.


Your role in the project

Your research will focus on developing quantitative decision-support models for circular food supply systems, including problems such as:

  • Stochastic circular supply chain network design
  • Facility location and capacity planning
  • Waste collection, sorting and vehicle routing 
  • Design of scalable reverse logistics systems for heterogeneous and perishable waste streams
  • Techno-economic analysis and evaluation of system performance and economic feasibility

The methodological focus is on mathematical programming and stochastic optimization, possibly combined with decomposition and/or heuristic methods when needed for large-scale applications.

The position offers strong opportunities for scientific publication, international collaboration, and interaction with industrial partners. The postdoc can also contribute to joint supervision of MSc and BSc students.

The research will be carried out within a core research team at NTNU that leads the FOOD2FEED project and two of its work packages. The Postdoctoral Fellow will mainly contribute to the work package on Network Design and Logistics Optimization under the supervision of WP leader Associate Professor Steffen Bakker, within the Operations Research group. The candidate will have the opportunity to engage with the Operations Management group at the department, in particular Professor Heidi Dreyer and Associate Professor Anita Romsdal, and to work alongside a PhD Candidate who will be hired as part of the project at the same time.

The research will be carried out in close collaboration with industry partners and other project researchers. The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to engage actively with company representatives, PhD candidates, and project partners to understand operational challenges, access data, and ensure that models and analyses reflect real-world decision problems.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will also collaborate with an international research network, including Professor Lluis Miquel Plà (University of Lleida), coordinator of the EURO Working Group on Operational Research in Agriculture and Forest Management, and Professor Peter Schütz (NHH Norwegian School of Economics), an expert in facility location and decision making under uncertainty. Opportunities for short research visits may be arranged.


Required selection criteria

  • A doctoral degree in 
    • Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.

    • A doctoral degree in Food Systems / Agricultural Systems / Supply Chain Operations, combined with strong competence in Quantitative Modeling and Optimization
  • Candidates in the final stages of their PhD may also apply.
  • Strong expertise in Mathematical Optimization and Modeling (e.g., MILP, Stochastic Programming, or related methods)
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, Julia, or similar).

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, presently at gross NOK 633.400,- before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. 

The position is conditional on external funding.

Trondheim is the workplace. For necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). About the position

We invite applications for a three-year position as PhD Research Fellow in statistics available at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), Department of Biostatistics, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB), University of Oslo (UiO), Norway. 

Starting date no later than September 1st, 2026 (or as soon as possible). The fellowship period is three years. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Job description

The position is connected to the project “Bayesian Enhanced Tensor Factorization Embedding Structure (BETTER)”, and this PhD project specifically aims at developing a unified, scalable, and interpretable framework for tensor analysis. Specifically, the project will:

  • Develop novel, modular statistical solvers to integrate domain-specific knowledge directly into latent variable models.
  • Account for spatial structures, physical laws, high-dimensional imaging, and clinical covariates.
  • Apply these methods to spatial transcriptomics and fluorescence imaging data to gain a more precise understanding of complex biological systems.

Research Environment & Collaboration
The successful candidate will work at the interface of machine learning and biostatistics, developing new theory, algorithms, and scalable implementations. By establishing a new class of multi-frame factorization methods, the candidate will be positioned at the forefront of genetic data science.

  • Local Research Infrastructure: You shall take part in the research group on “Statistical models for high-dimensional and functional data”, led by Professor Valeria Vitelli at OCBE, and will actively collaborate on data analyses and research problems with the MolMed Imaging Platform at IMB.
  • Global Impact: You will join the FunGen-AD consortium, the world’s largest research initiative studying the genetic underpinnings of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • International Mobility: The position includes a 3 to 6-month research stay at Columbia University in New York (USA).
  • Publication: Candidates are encouraged to publish in top-tier venues across machine learning (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML), statistics, and computational biology.
  • Dual Affiliation: The position will be based at and affiliated with the University of Oslo (Norway) and will be also affiliated with Columbia University (USA).

The research group on statistical models for high-dimensional and functional data is part of the larger and active research environment on “High-dimensional statistics” at OCBE. OCBE has expanded considerably during the last decade, becoming one of Europe's most active internationally recognized biostatistics groups with currently over 70 researchers. This PhD position is also embedded in an international research environment with co-supervision across statistics and machine learning. You will be encouraged to collaborate with prestigious US scholars at University of Columbia and other affiliated universities within the FunGen-AD consortium.

This therefore is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in statistics and machine-learning, by developing innovative methods at the interplay between theoretical and computational aspects, within a collaborative and supportive academic environment. You will be part of a dynamic group of early career researchers, supervised by two main PIs and senior experts from diverse fields of application.


What skills are important in this role?

Required qualification 
The Faculty of Medicine has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, machine learning, mathematics, computer science, physics, or a closely related quantitative discipline. In case of a foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level), this must correspond to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system. The Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • The Master project should treat methodological aspects with mathematical tools. The candidate must show a strong interest in method development.
  • Proven competence in probability, linear algebra, and statistical modelling are essential for this position.
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, PyTorch/JAX, or similar) and computational skills are required for this position.
  • Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Personal suitability and an interest in the themes connected to the funded project will be emphasized.
  • Working language in the group and at OCBE is English, hence excellent communication skills in written and oral English are a prerequisite. Background

There is a temporary PhD position for 3 years available at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management – Section Managerial Economics, Finance and Operation Research. The position is resident at NTNUs campus in Trondheim. About the project

This PhD position is part of the newly funded VISTA Centre for Norwegian Transformative Energy Policy Development (NOTRAP) (https://www.ntnu.edu/notrap), which will operate from 2025 to 2029. The center develops Energy Policy Incubators (EPIs) to co-create transformative, context-sensitive energy policies together with policymakers, industry stakeholders, citizens, and researchers.

NOTRAP is a cooperation between eight departments from four different NTNU faculties, and will house eight PhD students to be recruited in 2025, in the fields of design, psychology, sociology, social anthropology, economics and political sciences. This vacancy concerns one of these eight PhD positions and is allocated to the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management.

Within NOTRAP, the IØT department contributes with macroeconomic and environmental policy analysis through the application of the REMES model which is a Computional General Equilibrium (CGE) model. The PhD project will contribute to the economic and environmental assessment of policy scenarios developed in the EPIs, focusing on macroeconomic analysis, and the labor market and environmental impacts of energy policies.
For this position, we aim to recruit a PhD Candidate who will contribute to the project by addressing the following research questions:

  • How do energy transition policies affect different socio-economic groups and regions, and what are the implications for energy justice and policy acceptability?
  • How can macroeconomic insights be effectively integrated into participatory co-creation activities within the Energy Policy Incubators (EPIs)?
  • To what extent do behavioral and efficiency-based policies trigger rebound effects, and how can policy design mitigate these unintended consequences?

The candidate will work closely with a cross-disciplinary research team and will contribute to the development of policy-relevant outputs, such as policy briefs, academic publications, and stakeholder workshops.


About the position

The candidate will be based at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management and have access to co-working facilities shared with other NOTRAP PhD candidates at the Department of Psychology. The primary supervisor will be Senior Researcher Dr. Paolo Pisciella (Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management), with co-supervision from Associate Professor Pedro Crespo Del Granado (Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management).


Required selection criteria

  • The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) in Economics, Optimization, Econometrics, or related disciplines.  Applicants should have a strong academic background with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. 
     
  • Strong background in quantitative economic analysis.
     
  • Fluency in English (written and oral).

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience in applied macroeconomic modeling. 
  • Experience with CGE models or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with the Norwegian or European energy policy context.
  • Interest in policy co-creation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability transitions.

ARENA Centre for European Studies is a multidisciplinary research centre at the University of Oslo, studying the direction, dynamics and sustainability of the evolving European political order. The Norwegian Centre for International Economics (NORCIE) will strengthen Norway’s capacity to understand, anticipate, and respond to structural changes and policy shifts in the international economy – through cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and the communication of actionable insights on foreign, trade, security, and development policy. Rooted in economics, political science, and geography, this interdisciplinary centre will bring together four leading research environments with distinct yet complementary expertise in international economics: the Departments of Economics (ØI) and ARENA at the University of Oslo, the Chr. More about the position 

As a post-doctoral fellow, you will be working on the NORCIE project alongside Professors Craig Parsons and Bent Sofus Tranøy at ARENA, as well as partners in the project at the Department of Economics, UiO, the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), and the Peace Research Institute Oslo. You will be expected to both assist with research tasks designed by the project leaders and to develop and implement your own research in related areas. The position is announced within the overall thematic focus of the NORCIE project, with a particular emphasis on NORCIE’s research regarding the evolving EU economic order. Given NORCIE’s mission to inform Norwegian policy discussions, it is desirable that candidates have an interest in issues of relevance to Norway.

The selected candidate should have research experience and interests that connect to some of the ARENA-led components of NORCIE. 

The largest part of ARENA’s involvement in NORCIE will be related to studying the evolving EU economic order. The concept of rules-based openness has always been at the core of EU economic principles, but major pressures are pushing the EU to develop more active and discretionary capabilities. We will study these processes of change from both inside the EU (with interview research on the EU’s evolving policies regarding tradable goods, financial services, and information technology) and in the EU’s key external relationships (researching the related policies of the US, China, Russia, India and Brazil and their consequences for interactions with the EU). 

Other and more specific areas of ARENA’s involvement in NORCIE will cover:

  • Interactions of EU environmental policies and trade. In partnership with economists at the UiO Department of Economics, ARENA will study the politics of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and related issues, including interviews with firms, interest groups public officials at national and EU levels, with a focus on energy-intensive manufacturing sectors.       
  • Energy firms and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rules and norms. In partnership with economists at CMI, ARENA will study how large EU- and US-based companies in the energy sector (including fossil fuels and renewables) relate to ESG considerations. This work will include interviews with decision-makers at each step in firms’ supply chains and in sectoral associations as well as wider data on stakeholder attitudes.

The appointment is a full-time position for the duration of three years, with no teaching obligations.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their discipline. 

The proposed starting date for the position is as soon as possible. You will be provided with office space, equipment, and services as well as necessary resources for research related field work and conference travel. 

As a post-doctoral fellow, you will have your base at ARENA Centre for European Studies. You will be expected to be present in Oslo and to participate in ongoing activities at ARENA and NORCIE.

 


Qualifications 

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in political science, international political economy or European studies before taking up the post (SKO 1352). 
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability to conduct high quality research in areas relevant to the theme of the call.
  • Excellent written and oral proficiency in English and a good command of either Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is required.
  • Prior experience researching these topics at the national, comparative or EU level will be considered as an advantage: trade policy, financial services, information technology, environmental policy, energy policy, corporate governance and ESG norms.
  • Experience with qualitative research methods is an advantage, since the main ARENA activities will centre on interview-based research. Given the interdisciplinary nature of these projects, quantitative methodological skills are also helpful.

In assessing the candidates, particular emphasis will be placed on the quality and relevance of the submitted research publications and the article proposal. Personal suitability and motivation will be taken into consideration. Potential candidates will be invited for an interview.

The period of enrolment (admission – completion) in the PhD programme you have attended must be specified. 6. One writing sample (e.g. published articles or working papers) of what you consider your best publication to date preferably a single authored article in an international journal.
