About the position

A PhD position, fully funded for three years, is available at the Department of Biology of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim.

Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.

About the project

We invite applications for a PhD candidate to join an interdisciplinary research project focused on zooplankton ecology and its role in the oceanic biological carbon pump under the supervision of Associate Professor Jose Landeira and co-supervisor Associate Professor Kang Nian Yap . Oceans have sequestered approximately 30–50% of anthropogenic CO₂ since the beginning of the industrial revolution, mitigating the rise in atmospheric CO2 and, consequently, global warming. However, the mechanisms through which carbon is transported into the deep ocean remain poorly understood.

The project will investigate how zooplankton contributes to carbon sequestration through vertical migrations, using a combination of optical and acoustic instruments to observe and quantify their dynamics in the water column. A key objective is the development and improvement of physiological proxies and endpoints to better estimate zooplankton respiration and its impact on oceanic carbon fluxes. The position offers training in field observations, advanced instrumentation, experiments with zooplankton organisms and physiological analyses within an international research environment. This position will contribute to the strategic program Polhavet 2050.

About the position

Do you want to help shape the future of cardiac diagnostics? We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate in artificial intelligence (AI) and medical imaging at the Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging (ISB), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, NTNU. The position is affiliated with the Ultrasound Research Group at ISB and the research collaboration between NTNU, SINTEF Digital, and the Clinic of Cardiology at St. Olavs University Hospital. The project also involves close collaboration with Oslo University Hospital, Sørlandet University Hospital, and Tromsø University Hospital (UiT The Arctic University of Norway).

The position is funded by the Liaison Committee for Education, Research and Innovation in Central Norway.

The workplace is at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, NTNU, located at St. Olavs University Hospital in Trondheim.

The main supervisor will be Researcher Andreas Østvik (NTNU/SINTEF Digital). Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

About the project

The doctoral work is part of the project “Beyond Images – Multimodal Learning for Improved Assessment of Cardiac Function and Outcome Prediction using Artificial Intelligence and Echocardiography". The project aims to develop novel AI models based on self-supervised learning and multimodal machine learning to improve diagnostics, risk assessment, and prognostication of cardiac disease using echocardiography and other data modalities.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and echocardiography is the cornerstone of cardiac imaging. Despite significant advances in AI-based automation of individual measurements, substantial challenges remain in integrated, patient-centered analysis where imaging information is combined with clinical and physiological variables. This project addresses this gap by developing holistic AI frameworks that contextualize echocardiographic findings within the broader physiological and demographic profile of each patient.

The project builds on a unique combination of world-leading technological expertise in AI for echocardiography and access to one of the world's largest curated normative echocardiographic databases (>4,000 subjects from the HUNT and Tromsø population studies), as well as data from multiple clinical studies with patient outcomes (>10,000 patients).

Duties of the position

  • Develop and evaluate self-supervised learning models to learn representations of cardiac function patterns from large-scale data
  • Design and implement multimodal fusion architectures that integrate echocardiographic representations with clinical variables, time-series data (e.g. ECG, blood pressure), and demographic information
  • Develop interpretable and explainable AI models aimed at clinical transparency and user trust
  • Validate the holistic AI framework for risk prediction and prognostication across multiple cardiac conditions (heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, aortic stenosis, etc.)
  • Publish results in leading scientific journals and present at international conferences in collaboration with the research team
  • Be part of an interdisciplinary research environment at the intersection of technology and medicine
  • Write a doctoral thesis and publicly defend it
  • Complete the mandatory PhD program in Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU

Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.

Required selection criteria

  • A completed master's degree (equivalent to a minimum of 120 ECTS credits) in artificial intelligence, medical technology, computer science, physics, applied mathematics, informatics, or a related technical field.
  • The applicant must have a strong academic background from his or her previous studies, with an average grade from the master's program, or equivalent education, that is equivalent to a B or better according to NTNU's grading scale. If the applicant does not have letter grades from previous studies, he or she must have an equally good academic foundation. If the applicant has a weaker grade background, he or she may be considered if he or she can document that he or she is particularly suited for PhD education.
  • Master's students may apply, but the master's degree must be completed and documented before starting the position.
  • Documented experience with programming in Python and relevant machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)

The applicant must meet the requirements for admission to the Medical Faculty's PhD program.

Excellent written and oral English skills.

About the position

The Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a three-year PhD fellowship in the fields of women’s health and epidemiology.

This PhD project is a follow-up study of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who have participated in different clinical studies based at NTNU/St. Olavs hospital since the early 2000s. Data from the HUNT4 Survey (the fourth survey of the Trøndelag Health Study) will be used as a reference population.

About the project

Background

When the original studies were conducted 25 years ago, PCOS was primarily understood as a reproductive disorder with particular relevance for fertility. Since then, research has substantially advanced, and PCOS is now recognized as a complex, lifelong condition. Despite this progress, significant knowledge gaps remain—especially regarding women’s health in peri‑ and postmenopausal stages related to cardiovascular, respiratory, and pain-related comorbidities. Research on PCOS in these life phases is limited, and the long-term health consequences of PCOS after menopause are not fully understood.

Project Description

This PhD project aims to address these gaps by conducting a comprehensive follow-up of approximately 750 women with PCOS, including questionnaires, blood sampling, andphysical examinations.

The primary objective is to collect new longitudinal clinical data from well-defined PCOS cohorts, with particular focus on:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Respiratory function
  • Chronic pain and musculoskeletal health

This project will contribute essential knowledge to help improve patient pathways, early prevention strategies, and long-term care for women with PCOS.

Research Environment

The position is affiliated with the PCOS and Women’s Health Research Group, a collaborative initiative between St. Olavs hospital and NTNU. The PhD candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment with researchers from gynecology, midwifery, epidemiology, and biostatistics. The group has decades of experience with clinical and epidemiological research in PCOS and women’s health.

The fellowship provides opportunities for close clinical collaboration, access to unique long-term datasets, and engagement in an internationally relevant research field with substantial public health impact.

The position is funded by the Liaison Committee between the Central Norway Regional Health Authority (RHA) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The PhD candidate will be part of the research group “PCOS and women´s health” led by Professor and consultant/gynecologist Eszter Vanky. Vanky will be the main supervisor for the PhD candidate.

The position is intended to be a three-year, full-time position, but there may also be an opportunity for a part-time position combined with clinical work. The position is affiliated with the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM), with the workplace located at IKOM, Trondheim. The desired start date is  1st of September 2026. An earlier start date ca be discussed.
