U kunt een schakel worden van een groot openbaar bedrijf dat een van onze kostbaarste goederen beheert: water.
Als lid van het team 'mechanisch onderhoud' in een van onze waterbehandelingsstations (Directie Productie) werkt u mee aan het onderhoud en de ontwikkeling van onze netten en installaties. U moet
- alle werken uitvoeren inzake montage en mechanische assemblage, zowel binnen als buiten
- elektromechanische installaties onderhouden, herstellen en er toezicht op houden (mechanische onderdelen aanpassen, pompen, compressoren, afsluiters, dieselaggregaten en andere apparatuur afstellen aan de hand van handleidingen, plannen, schema's, ...)
- U bent in het bezit van ten minste een getuigschrift van het lager secundair onderwijs mechanica, elektromechanica of een aanverwante richting OF u bent in het bezit van een getuigschrift van een duale opleiding in mechanica, elektromechanica of een aanverwante richting OF u hebt ten minste 5 jaar relevante ervaring in mechanica
- Bij de aanwerving moet u in het bezit zijn van een definitief rijbewijs B (handgeschakeld voertuig)
- Een rijbewijs C is een pluspunt

MAIN TASKS:
- 5G/6G RAN Development & Testing
- Implement and validate 3GPP and O-RAN specifications in a controlled lab environment.
- Perform end-to-end testing on open-source and commercial 5G systems, including performance benchmarking, troubleshooting, and security assessment.
- Contribute to prototyping and integrating hardware/software components within a programmable testbed.
- Defence-oriented Analysis & Applications
- Translate experimental findings into technical requirements and recommendations for defence and security-oriented communication systems.
- Analyze the suitability and limitations of 5G technologies for operational scenarios (e.g., tactical communications, mission-critical networking, ISR/situational awareness).
- Identify and characterize vulnerabilities, constraints, and opportunities in applying advanced RAN technologies to military contexts.
- Research, Innovation & PhD Development
- Stay up to date on developments in next-generation networks, including 6G, NTN, O-RAN evolution, and secure PHY/MAC mechanisms.
- Propose and investigate novel approaches to improving RAN performance, security, and resilience.
- Engage in scientific publication, participate in conferences, and develop research contributions aligned with a PhD trajectory.
Collaboration & Technical Communication
- Work closely with industrial, academic, and military partners to align technological developments with operational needs.
- Participate in technical reviews, meetings, and workshops to present results and support joint activities.
- Produce clear, high-quality documentation, including technical reports, project deliverables, and scientific articles.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Degree(s) required / ideal degree(s): Master degree in Engineering Science, Computer Science, Applied Sciences, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline.
This position is open for junior to experienced profiles with the strongly preference for a PhD candidate.
¿MUST HAVE¿ skills:
- Strong programming and debugging skills with experience in C/C++, Python, or Shell scripting, particularly in Linux-based environments.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including protocols, routing, and wireless communication principles.
- Hands-on experience in lab testing, software development, and system integration.
¿NICE TO HAVE¿ skills:
- Knowledge of advanced topics such as signal processing, image processing, information theory, numerical analysis, and stochastic processes.
- Familiarity with 4G/5G standards, including system architecture, protocols, and procedures.
- Proficiency in Software-Defined Radio (SDR) and radio engineering, including tools such as GNU Radio, USRP, or similar platforms.
- Experience with secure communication protocols, military-grade communication systems, or low-latency network optimization.

Other skills:
- The applicant shall have good knowledge of English (oral / written).
- Minimum knowledge of French or Dutch is an added value for collaboration with peers.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- The researcher may be exposed to classified information and will therefore have to obtain the required security clearance. The candidate must consent with the background check required to obtain this clearance, which will be executed by Belgian Defence.
- Only applicants with a nationality of a country that is both part of NATO and the EU will be eligible.
- Working for the Patrimony requires living in Belgium for the duration of the study.
CONTRACT
- Probable date of recruitment: From 15 March 2026, in consultation with the applicant.
- Status: Full-time employment based on an open-ended contract with the Patrimony of the Royal Military Academy (you will not be a civil servant).
- Please note that your contract will be open-ended, but the financing of the contract will be tied to the funding project, which is guaranteed until 02 March 2030. The financing of your contract beyond that period is therefore not 100% guaranteed. However, the Patrimony has a policy to keep the good elements on board and the research focus of this job offer fits within our core research activities, so there is a high chance that we will be able to offer you follow-up projects beyond that date if you decide to stay.
- Wage scale: class A1 (holder of a Master's degree in Science or equivalent), class A2 (holder of an Ir degree or equivalent Master's in Engineering Sciences recognized in Belgium as Ir, doctor's degree in the same area of expertise). RMA-Patrimony applies a merit-based research career track, allowing researchers to advance in wage scale based upon annual evaluations.
