About the position
A three-year postdoctoral research fellowship is available in the research group of Prof. Andreas Carlson at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo.
Starting date no later than December 1, 2026.
No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.
The position is part of two projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, focusing on the development of soft hairy surfaces for flow control and vibration-based soft robots. The overarching goal is to develop a new understanding of fluid flows coupled to complex and actively driven surfaces. Specifically, the projects aim to uncover the fundamental physical principles that govern the coupling between active surfaces and their surrounding fluid environment, and to use this knowledge to inspire new technological applications. The physical designs will be partly bio-inspired and will emphasize sustainability.
This position is well suited to candidates who are highly motivated by fundamental science and excited about questions related to actively controlled or driven surfaces in the context of soft robotics, sensing, and flow control.
You should be strongly self-driven, genuinely interested in an academic career, and eager to develop independence in your research. The postdoctoral fellow will join an international and interdisciplinary research group.
The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment. There are some administrative duties associated with the position connected to the project and research group activities.
Qualification requirements

Required qualifications:
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in mechanics, physics, applied mathematics or similar. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Excellent track record in fundamental research in fluid mechanics, active materials, soft robotics, or within elastic materials.
- A strong experimental background in developing and performing experiments in one of the following; soft materials, robotics, complex materials, fluids, interfaces, active surfaces.
Desired qualifications:
- Experience within some of the areas of active materials, robotics, sensors, elastohydrodynamics, interfacial flows and/or complex materials will also be considered beneficial.
- A theoretical background and/or scientific computing will be also considered beneficial.

About the Department
The Department of Physical Performance contributes through education, research, and dissemination, to an understanding of what determines physical performance with a focus on exercise physiology, biomechanics and technology.
The department is responsible for teaching and conducting research within areas of how physical performance is influenced by optimal training and technique in both a sport and health perspective as well as in rehabilitation of patients.
The department's activities take place in "state of the art" laboratories, equipped for studying human motions.
The department's target groups incorporate various populations; youth, elite athletes, the elderly population and patients.
We carry specific responsibility for research within the sports of cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, swimming, orienteering, and track and field.
The position and the research project
The Department of Physical Performance at NIH offers a three- to four-year PhD fellowship from September/October 2026, four-year if teaching 25%.
The fellowship is in Exercise Physiology, with the PhD project focusing on:
- biological sex differences in performance-limiting factors
- durability
- metabolism
- fatigue development
- and the influence of nutritional strategies in well-trained individuals to elite athletes in endurance sports.
This will be achieved through a combination of laboratory- and field-based studies. The exact research questions and methodological approaches will be further refined in collaboration with the successful candidate.
The PhD candidate will play an active role in all aspects of the project, including planning and development of study design, participant recruitment, data collection (assessments of performance, indirect calorimetry and gas exchanges, metabolic measurements, muscle biopsy allocation and analysis, etc.), data analysis, and dissemination of findings. The candidate will work closely with researchers at NIH and external collaborators.
There will be opportunities for international collaboration, and periods of research exchange at international institutions are encouraged, although not mandatory.
The project will be under the supervision of Associate Professor Øyvind Skattebo, Associate Professor Kristin Lundanes Jonvik and Professor Jostein Hallén.
The successful candidate will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at NIH. Employment as a PhD fellow will be conditional on successful enrolment in the PhD program.
Job Description
Your main tasks as a PhD fellow at NIH are to:
- Complete an independent research project under supervision.
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent educational activities corresponding to 30 ECTS points.
- Actively participate in research environments, including collaboration with fellow researchers.
- Dissemination of results from your PhD project, both at international conferences and in scientific journals.
- Write a PhD thesis based on your project.
- Optional: The candidate may gain teaching experience, depending on the department's teaching needs and the candidate's competencies.
Qualification requirements and the Selection Process
The applicant must be eligible for admission to the doctoral program at NIH: PhD program - Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Applicants should hold a two-year master’s degree in Sport Sciences or equivalent with the grade B or better. It is the candidate responsibility to document and eventually transform the grade.
Selection Criteria
- Experience in human studies and experience in scientific writing, i.e. publications in scientific peer reviewed journals, are considered an advantage.
- Demonstrate competence/experience and motivation to conduct independent research using advanced methods to investigate determinants of endurance performance such as, but not limited to, the study of metabolism and cardiorespiratory fitness using indirect calorimetry, the measurements of hemoglobin mass and blood volume using carbon monoxide rebreathing, and the analysis of metabolic markers in blood and muscle.
- Experience with performance- and cardiopulmonary exercise testing of well-trained individuals or highly trained athletes is considered a requisite
- Familiarity with handling and interpreting complex datasets is an advantage.
- Programming experience is advantageous but not required; willingness to learn will be considered a strength
- Quality of the master's thesis and the relevance of the master's thesis to the project topic, both academically and methodologically.
- Good collaboration skills, and ability to independently find innovative solutions.
- Good written and oral skills in English is required.
- Structured, reliable, and motivated to contribute to all phases of a research project.
The purpose of the recruitment position is for the candidate to achieve a PhD during the fellowship period. Admission to the doctoral program is therefore a condition for employment as a research fellow. The candidate must be able to complete the project during the fellowship period.
The employment period is three or four years, depending on teaching qualifications and needs. The fellow will have their workplace at the Department of Physical Performance, NIH, Oslo, Norway.
The candidate is required to submit an admission to the PhD program no later than six weeks after employment. A complete project description, including a proposal for the plan for the doctoral education/progress plan, will be developed in consultation with supervisors with the aim of formal admission to the doctoral program at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. The application will be processed in accordance with applicable guidelines for employment in fellowship positions, and employment is contingent upon admission to the PhD program. The study plan for all required coursework must be approved no later than three months after commencement.

The position
At the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE), the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS), UiT The Arctic University of Norway, there is a permanent position available as Senior Engineer / Chief Engineer in Microbial Bioinformatics. The position is affiliated with the Microalgae & Microbiomes Research Group (M2RG).
The Norwegian College of Fishery Science currently has approximately 130 employees across scientific and technical/administrative positions. Research activities are organized around two main themes: marine resource management and marine biotechnology. This includes both basic research and applied research related to marine resources, seafood science, fish health, marine biotechnology, and marine bioprospecting. Research at NCFS is conducted in close collaboration with other research groups within the faculty and university, as well as with national and international partners.
The Microalgae & Microbiomes Research Group (M2RG) focuses on understanding marine microalgae and microbial communities using multi-omics approaches, molecular ecology, and experimental systems. The group integrates genomics, microbiology, synthetic biology and bioinformatics to better understand microbial ecosystems and develop solutions related to sustainability, biotechnology, and carbon cycling.
The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time.
Job description
The successful applicant will hold a permanent technical position supporting the research activities of the Microalgae & Microbiomes Research Group. The position will focus primarily on development and maintenance of scalable data infrastructure for large sequencing datasets, with particular emphasis on shotgun metagenomic sequencing data analysis and genome-resolved metagenomics.
The successful applicant will also contribute to maintaining and further developing the group’s bioinformatics infrastructure, including workflows, data management practices, and access to computational resources. The position will emphasize reproducible research practices, version-controlled workflows, and transparent data analysis. The position offers opportunities to develop scientific leadership within bioinformatics and to contribute to the group´s strategic development of computational and multi-omics research capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Processing and analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, particularly shotgun metagenomics
- Metagenome assembly, binning, and reconstruction of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs)
- Analysis of transcriptomic and metatranscriptomic datasets
- Development and maintenance of reproducible bioinformatics workflows and pipelines
- Management and organization of large sequencing datasets
- Working with local and national high-performance computing (HPC) resources
- Supporting research projects through data interpretation, documentation, quality assurance
- Collaborating on and leading peer reviewed scientific publications
- Collaborating on research grants
- Collaborating on bioinformatics related teaching activities
- Mentoring researchers, MSc and PhD students with bioinformatics analyses

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have the following qualifications:
- A Master’s degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field
- Documented experience with shotgun metagenomic data analysis
- Experience working in Linux/Unix environments
- Experience using high-performance computing (HPC) systems
- Proficiency in programming and data analysis using R and/or Python
- Experience with genome and/or metagenome assembly and analysis
The following qualifications are considered advantageous:
- Experience with metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) reconstruction
- Experience with metatranscriptomics or transcriptomics analysis
- Experience developing reproducible bioinformatics workflows (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake, or similar)
- Experience managing and organizing large sequencing datasets
- Familiarity with microbiology or molecular biology laboratory techniques
- A track record of leading/assisting peer reviewed scientific publications

Project description
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research group led by Professors Finn-Eirik Johansen (Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Shuo-Wang Qiao (Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine).
The group’s main research focus is the unique immune system of the Atlantic cod, which is characterized by the evolutionary loss of MHC class II molecules and CD4 T cells — components that are essential for immunocompetence in other vertebrates, including humans.
We combine classical molecular biology and experimental immunology with cutting-edge technologies, including modern high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics. The project investigates the transcriptional profiles of Atlantic cod immune cells at the single-cell level and maps the immune receptor repertoires of cod B and T cells during homeostasis and in response to microbes, microbial products and vaccines.

Department of Biosciences (IBV) is one of nine departments at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Research in the department is organised in five sections covering topics within biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, cell biology, genetics, aquatic biology, toxicology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The Department also operates Finse research station, the Biological research station in Drøbak and UiO's research vessel. Education across these topics is offered for around 300 bachelor, 170 master, and 75 PhD students. With 48 permanent professors/associate professors, post-docs, researchers, technical, and administrative personnel, the Department has a total staff of 260 from more than 30 different countries. The Department aims to maintain high international standards within both research and teaching. The new bachelor program in bioscience is the first of its kind to include programming and computational modelling as core elements.
About the position
A fixed-term 100 % position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Humanities and Education as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in European Languages in Post-Colonial Africa: Historical Perspectives (1950-1990), affiliated to the Department of Religion, Philosophy and History, for a period of 3 years. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand. The preferred starting date is the beginning of 2027.
The position is linked to UiA’s research groups “Claimed Pasts: Critical Knowledge and Heritage Production” and “Language and Power.”
Applicants are invited to suggest an empirically and theoretically sound research project which conceptualizes language, and specifically the role of European languages, as an historical object, heuristic device, and analytical lens for understanding African decolonization as a historical process. Their research project might, for example, address
- the role language played for anticolonial mobilization or post-colonial nation- and state-building processes
- the late- or post-colonial connections between language, education, and development
- the role language played for inter- and transnational collaboration and institutions
- language in relation to African subjectivities, collective identities, and social distinction
Ideally, gender should be a central analytical category rather than an add-on variable in the research project. If convincingly conceptualized, any geographic or linguistic area within Africa and its diaspora is pertinent. Projects that place their research topic in a comparative and connective context and converse with discussions in global history will be particularly relevant.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be supported by and is expected to contribute actively to both research groups. They will work closely with Professor Christoph Kalter who is a member of both groups. More specifically, the successful candidate will:
- Conduct research on the project they proposed and publish three single-author articles in leading historical journals.
- Co-organize an authors’ workshop for and co-edit a special issue on (post-) colonial African language histories in a leading historical journal.
- Participate in activities and meetings in the research groups.
- Contribute to writing grant applications in the research groups.
- Contribute to teaching and supervision activities at the department.
Required qualifications
- PhD in history, preferentially in African history. Candidates must have obtained their doctorate or have submitted their doctoral thesis before the appointment decision is made and must have defended their thesis by the starting date.
- Familiarity with transnational and global history approaches.
- Experience with archival research.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Language skills required to conduct the research they proposed.
- The applicants must have excellent international publications or concrete plans for such publications based on their PhD. Furthermore, the applicants must demonstrate strong potential for excellent international publications based on the project proposal they submit.
