Postdoctoral Fellow
UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

About the position

The Department of Political Science is recruiting up to two Postdoctoral Fellows (SKO 1352) with specialization in political data science or comparative politics. We are looking for an excellent candidate with the potential of pursuing a long-term career in academia. The successful applicant will be part of the research project, “Authoritarian Threats to Scientific Knowledge” (AutoKnow), which is funded by the European Research Council. The appointment is a fulltime position for a period of three years. Depending on the candidate’s competence and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended up to four years for other types of qualification work including various teaching tasks and obligations.

The primary aim of AutoKnow is to investigate how the production of scientific knowledge is affected by authoritarian regimes and politics. The project will look at how authoritarian rule affects the contents and research trajectories of scientific fields, and which fields are targeted for repression and co-optation by authoritarian rulers and movements. It will use computational text analysis to measure content-dimensions of published science and collect different data on attacks on academic freedom. It will study how authoritarian rule affects scientific progress, topic choice, political bias, idea novelty and other dimensions.

AutoKnow will answer questions such as:

  • Which academic fields and institutions are repressed, and which are supported by authoritarian leaders?
  • How does authoritarian rule shape the contents and political profile of academic work in different fields?
  • What is the impact of authoritarian rule on scientific progress?

A postdoctoral position is intended to help the successful candidate develop a research profile and competencies that qualify them to apply for a permanent position in academia. To this end, the main focus of this position is to conduct research, including publication and dissemination. In addition, the fellow is expected to actively contribute to the broader research agenda and environment of the AUTOKNOW project, including project workshops. If the postdoctoral researcher does not already possess the teaching/pedagogical qualifications that meet the requirements for an associate professorship (incl. formal training), the department shall facilitate the acquisition of such qualifications during the employment period. Additionally, the position may provide other competencies relevant to the postdoctoral fellow’s future career.

To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are expected to submit a career development plan, specifying career goals and the competencies that the postdoctoral fellow should acquire, no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period. The department is responsible for ensuring that the plan is followed up and that the postdoctoral researcher has access to career guidance throughout the duration of the postdoctoral fellowship.

Other qualifications

  • Applicants must have a very good to excellent command of English (written and oral).

The evaluation of applicants is based on documented, academic qualifications. When assessing applicants, we generally look for candidates whose academic record and submitted publication/paper showcase their ability to independently conduct research at a high international level. We place emphasis on recent publications and the potential for future high-quality research, rather than the sheer quantity of publications, as this is a recruitment position.

We will consider qualifications relative to the length of the candidate’s academic career (based on the length of the PhD program, the number of years since PhD, and career breaks). Personal suitability, motivation, and compatibility with the rest of the project team are also considered.

About the project

The PhD candidate will independently drive the project as part of a research environment working on inclusion,
equality, and diversity. The main supervisor conducts research on neurodiversity in the workplace. The second
supervisor conducts research on diversity and inclusion and has expertise in research methods. The third
supervisor conducts research on organizational psychology and innovation.

Project Background
Neurodivergent diagnoses — including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia — are increasing among both children and
adults. At the same time, neurodivergent individuals face high unemployment rates, limited career
opportunities, and persistent workplace discrimination. While neurodivergence has received growing attention
in discussions of innovation and organizational competitiveness, workplace practices often remain grounded in
neuronormative assumptions that privilege neurotypical ways of thinking and working. Research indicates that
such assumptions are embedded in organizational and HR systems through misrecognition, superficial inclusion
efforts, and unreflective routines, which may obscure or undervalue neurodivergent contributions.
Drawing on diversity and inclusion research and innovation theory — particularly process-based and socioorganizational
approaches — the project examines how neurodivergent cognitive profiles interact with
organizational structures and practices to shape innovation processes across different stages, and under what
conditions such contributions are enabled or constrained.

Project Overview
The project investigates how neurodivergent cognitive profiles influence innovation in organizational and
entrepreneurial contexts. Neurodivergence is understood as a form of cognitive variation, where implications
for innovation depend on organizational context, practices, and evaluative criteria. The project will examine
how characteristics associated with neurodivergent cognition — such as sustained attention, associative
thinking, pattern recognition, and tolerance for ambiguity — relate to different stages of the innovation process, including idea generation, development, and implementation.
The project combines an individual-level focus on cognitive characteristics with an organizational-level analysis
of how structures, cultures, and practices shape whether and how these characteristics become relevant for
innovation, with particular relevance for knowledge-intensive and professional service contexts.

Societal Relevance
The project addresses challenges related to labor market inclusion and social sustainability. Despite an
estimated unemployment rate of around 40% among autistic adults, limited knowledge exists about how
organizational conditions shape opportunities for participation and contribution. By applying a neurodiversity
perspective, the project focuses on the interaction between individual characteristics and organizational
environments. This includes how organizational design, work practices, and evaluative systems may create or
reduce barriers to participation, and how inclusion may involve changes at both the individual and
organizational level.

For further information, please contact:

About the project

Project overview
The PhD research fellow will join an international team of researchers at CREDS, Inland School of Business and Social Sciences. We seek a highly motivated candidate to research circular battery strategies and future applications from a business and innovation perspective. CREDS’s overarching academic objective is accelerating research on the transitions enabling sustainable businesses and societies. The primary focus is to understand transitions at the level of ecosystems and markets and at the intersection between digitization and sustainability, for instance linked to new or changed business models, value chains and practices.

The candidate’s PhD project should address how scarce resources in circular value chains related to energy and mobility are organized and governed across competing end-of-life pathways. Relevant topics include sustainable value creation, reuse and repair strategies, recycling systems, and business models that extend the useful life of batteries and battery materials. The project may examine how such arrangements work in practice, how they develop over time, and how different pathways can be assessed in relation to sustainability, loop extension, efficiency, resilience, and other relevant criteria. It may also focus on market formation, ecosystem dynamics, governance arrangements, power relations, and the role of technology in handling resource tensions across systems, as well as on how firms and other actors develop circular strategies under competing demands, regulatory change, and uncertainty about future resource use. One particularly relevant empirical example is end-of-life EV batteries, where tensions may arise between reusing or repurposing batteries for second-life energy storage and recycling materials back into battery production or other industrial uses. Norway provides a promising context for studying such issues due to its early and extensive adoption of battery-electric vehicles.

Candidates are encouraged to define their own research design within this theme. This includes developing the specific research questions, theoretical perspective, empirical focus, and methodological approach in dialogue with the supervisory team and the academic environment at CREDS. A broad range of methodological approaches is relevant for the theme, including qualitative case studies, optimization models, system dynamics modelling, and agent-based modelling. Please note that the project may later be modified in accordance with the supervisors’ advice and the academic research agenda of CREDS. The successful candidate will have a primary supervisor among CREDS’ academic staff.

Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a master’s degree and thesis on a relevant topic. Relevant academic backgrounds may include business and management, innovation studies, energy systems, industrial ecology, system dynamics, systems modelling, sustainability transitions, science and technology studies, topic-related forms of engineering, and other related interdisciplinary fields.
  • The master's degree must normally constitute 120 ECTS credits. INN’s PhD regulations require that the qualifying education includes a master’s thesis of 30 ECTS. As a rule, the average grade at master’s level must be B.
  • The qualifying degree(s) must be awarded from institutions in Norway, the EU/EEA or Switzerland, or from an international institution accredited by AACSB, AMBA and/or EQUIS. Where applicable, candidates should specify such accreditation in the application.
  • Candidates who have not yet obtained the master’s degree at the time of application may apply. In this case, candidates must have submitted their master’s thesis by the application deadline. Temporary transcripts and the master’s thesis must be submitted with the application. The final diploma must be available by the time of employment.
  • Candidates with a master’s degree from a university abroad must attach “Recognition of foreign higher education” from NOKUT. Instructions for obtaining this assessment are available from NOKUT, https://hkdir.no/en/foreign-education/education-from-outside-of-norway/recognition-of-foreign-higher-education-bachelor-master-and-phd.
  • Since the project is likely to involve extensive empirical research, dialogue with practitioners, meetings, and field-based data collection involving Norwegian and other Nordic actors, the ability to work effectively in Nordic industry and institutional contexts will be important. Relevant professional experience from industry or other practice-based settings in the Nordics, or in a comparable context, is therefore considered a strong merit.
  • Oral and written English is required. Applicants from non-English speaking countries must document their English proficiency in accordance with the Supplementary Regulations for Admission to the PhD Programme at INN University. A command of a Scandinavian language is a strong merit.
  • Expertise in relevant ICT software for research is an advantage.
  • Research experience acquired after completion of the master’s degree is considered an advantage, but is not required.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently and purposefully, and engage confidently with external actors to carry out empirical fieldwork. The role also requires the ability to collaborate well on academic research and publishing.

Evaluation of candidates for the position will be based on a total assessment of educational background, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation and other eligibility requirements, as defined in the advertisement. In addition, the following will be emphasized: quality of the project description, documented independent research and development work or experience relevant to the project.

The position and associated tasks must be carried out in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations for government employees, including also the Act on Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology, etc. Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, come into conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to take up the position at University of Inland Norway.
