Job description

Two Doctoral Research Fellowships (SKO 1017) in East Asian religions are available at the Department of Culture, Religion, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (IKOS), University of Oslo.

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in the project “Maritime Goddesses: Transnational Connections, Blue Environments, and Ritual Care in East- and Southeast Asia” (MARGO), funded by the European Research Council (ERC). MARGO studies some of the most popular deities in the world and the ways in which people relate to them: Guanyin, Mazu, Benzaiten, and several other goddesses to whom people pray for protection and support. These goddesses are often associated with bodies of water (seas, oceans, rivers, and deltas). They can move, change shape, and transcend political and ontological boundaries. Although these goddesses are central to the ritual lives of billions of people, there has been little research on the ways in which people relate to them in everyday life.

MARGO offers a large-scale comparative, transnational, and multidisciplinary approach to goddess worship in Asia, focusing not on a single deity or tradition but comparing different practices across time and space. Its overarching questions are: 1) How have people in East and Southeast Asian places related to their goddesses in everyday life; 2) How do these goddesses relate to the larger maritime and riverine environments in which they are embedded; and 3) How have they travelled and changed in response to changes in their devotees’ lives and environments?
The doctoral research fellows will each be responsible for one work package. Applicants should choose one of the two.

Project descriptions

PhD project 1
The River, the Snake, and the Lute: The Changing Meanings of Benzaiten

This PhD candidate will study the popular Japanese goddess Benzaiten, who is often associated with the Indian river goddess Sarasvatī. Benzaiten is arguably one of the most interesting deities in the country: she refuses to be classified as either Buddhist or Shinto, showing up at institutions belonging to both; she is associated with river creatures such as snakes and dragons, while also featuring in pacification rituals for animals killed for food or lab experiments; she is the patron goddess of artists and musicians, but also widely worshipped as a prosperity goddess (people literally wash their money in streams associated with her, hoping that it will yield profits). In other words, she embodies some of the core paradoxes of contemporary Japanese religion. This PhD project will lead to a monograph on modern and/or contemporary Benzaiten worship. Depending on the candidate’s interests and expertise, it may consist of archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, or a combination of both. The candidate should be proficient in Japanese.

PhD project 2
Moving Mazu: Pilgrimage, Heritage Politics, and Smartphones 

Every year, the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage in Taiwan keeps a significant proportion of the island’s population occupied. This pilgrimage keeps growing and is now widely considered as one of the main expressions of Taiwanese cultural identity. But Taiwan is not the only place where Mazu is considered important national heritage. The PRC, too, lays claim to the tradition, and has made considerable attempts to turn Mazu’s birthplace, Meizhou Island, into a pilgrimage destination. Meanwhile, pilgrims continue to have personal, affective relationships with Mazu. How do they experience these relations? Why do they matter to them? What kind of rituals do they engage in? And how do new technologies and media, such as smartphones and social media networks, transform pilgrimage practices? This PhD candidate will focus on contemporary Mazu worship in Taiwan, conducting ethnographic fieldwork with pilgrims, traders, temple caretakers, and other relevant actors. If possible, they will also join a group of Taiwanese pilgrims to Meizhou; if not, they will interview others who have made this trip. The candidate should be proficient in Chinese.

More about the position:

The person appointed will be affiliated with the faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. Read more about the Doctoral degree: PhD in the Humanities (hf.uio.no). 

The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant (hf.uio.no).

Qualification requirements

Mandatory requirements

• A Master's degree or equivalent in Asian studies, religious studies, social anthropology, or a related discipline. The Master's degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline. 
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English (see Language requirements (hf.uio.no). 
• Good working knowledge of Japanese (for PhD project 1) or Mandarin Chinese (for PhD project 2). For project 2, knowledge of Hokkien is an added advantage. 
• Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Oslo, applicants must, as a minimum, have completed a five-year graduation course (Master’s degree or equivalent), including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality.
Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.

Desired qualifications/competence

• Previous ethnographic fieldwork or other research experience (e.g., archival research), preferably in the region.
• Previous experience with academic writing. Candidates who have already (co-)published academic texts have an advantage.
• Other relevant academic experience (e.g., work as a research assistant, conference organisation, translation work, or teaching).

About the position

Are you looking for a PhD opportunity that combines rigorous AI research with high-impact problems in next-generation wireless systems? We are recruiting a talented and motivated PhD student for a Research Council of Norway-funded project in collaboration with NTNU and SINTEF Digital. The research focuses on advanced signal analysis and machine learning methods that enable robust operation and service continuity in future wireless networks under challenging radio conditions.

As a PhD student, you will develop state-of-the-art learning and inference methods to detect and characterize anomalous radio behavior and to design algorithms that remain reliable under practical constraints. Depending on background and interests, the work may involve robust detection under distribution shifts and unseen interference conditions, resilient federated/decentralized (collaborative) learning, and reinforcement learning for adaptive decision-making. A key aim is to connect wireless phenomena to learning robustness by combining physical-layer signal structure and signal-processing insights with trustworthy learning principles.

You will join a dynamic, collaborative team conducting rigorous AI and signal processing research with clear relevance to future wireless systems. The work emphasizes principled modeling, reproducible experimentation with open datasets and simulations, and publication-ready contributions targeting leading venues in machine learning and wireless communications. You will also have opportunities for international collaboration with leading research groups through joint publications, visits, and conference presentations.

Your immediate leader will be the leader of the signal processing group.

Required selection criteria

• You must have a relevant Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master’s students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The employment period is 3 years for the doctoral work, with a possible extension of up to one year of career-promoting work.

About the position

The Department of Historical Sciences at the Faculty of Humanity offers an exciting 4-year postdoctoral position that gives you the opportunity to develop a strong profile as researcher. The 4-year postdoctoral fellowship is associated with a European Research Council/Horizon Europe research project, entitled “BLOCKADE: The Hidden Weapon. Blockade in the Era of the Two Worlds”. The project explores the impact and legacy of the (sea) blockades during and after both world wars and is undertaken by international teams in four locations, including at NTNU, the University of Freiburg, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Hamburg. The purpose of the postdoctoral position is for the employee to build up a researcher profile and competence that qualifies the person to apply for a position as associate professor.

The postdoctoral researcher will focus on the work package Blockade measures and their effectiveness. Based on a dataset of monthly German import data in World War II, which has been disaggregated into about 1,000 different import categories, the postdoctoral researcher will investigate whether and to what extent the various blockade measures used by the blockaders, such as classifying various goods as contraband and applying diplomatic pressure, were actually effective in Europe. To this end, the postdoc will use econometric methods, such as those that have been successfully applied to similar trade datasets. The postdoc will also examine to which extent these results deviate or match the wartime assessments of the blockaders.

The postdoctoral fellow is encouraged to develop their own approach to these questions. The work package is one of six positions across the four BLOCKADE locations that should speak to the theme of 'Integration/disintegration', exploring the short- and long-term integrative and disintegrative effects of blockades with regard to markets, wartime societies and the international order. The team members will work together across locations to build a rich primary source base for BLOCKADE.

Planned starting date for this position is 01.09.2026.

The postdoctoral fellow will work with the project leader of the Trondheim team, Jonas Scherner. Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department. 

About the project 

BLOCKADE (ERC Synergy Grant #101166983, www.blockades.eu) explores the two blockades of the First and Second World Wars, and their aftermaths. In these total wars, the Allies imposed a global blockade on their enemies, and the Central and Axis powers responded with blockades of their own. Over a period of six years, the BLOCKADE team, based in Trondheim, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Freiburg, will analyse the impact of blockades on households, states, corporations and the international order; on the development of political and military strategy; on how the wars were prepared, experienced and remembered; and on how peace was made. BLOCKADE sets out to prove that these blockades are crucial to understanding not only the way the world wars were fought but also their globality and totality, their immediate effects and their long-term global repercussions. Duties of the position

• Carry out research of high ambition and excellent quality
• Publish at least two articles in leading peer-reviewed journals
• Publish at least one chapter in the project’s handbook on the history of blockades and help with the coordination and editing of that handbook
• Actively participate in the research and outreach activities of BLOCKADE
• Contribute to scientific and financial reporting to the funding body
• Actively participate in the project’s workshops, seminars and conferences as well as in organizing and hosting those events taking place in Trondheim
• Help organize BLOCKADE’s research and reading seminars
• Contribute to data collection (qualitative and quantitative primary sources) for the central database located in Amsterdam

Required selection criteria

• You must have completed a doctoral degree in history; preference will be given to applicants with expertise in economic history and quantitative methods
• If you are in the final phase of your doctorate and can document that the thesis has been submitted or that the defense date has been confirmed, your application can be considered even if you have not defended. NOTE: Documentation of the obtained doctorate must be presented before you can take up the position.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years.

The position is conditional on external funding.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control (legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to be in conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

If you have had leave or another break in your career, it is important that this is stated in your application so that the selection committee can take this into account and that the amount of your research may be reduced as a result.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal qualities. Motivation, ambitions and potential for research will also be emphasized in the assessment of the candidates.
