Researcher – Forensic Genetics

We are seeking a motivated researcher for a full-time permanent position within forensic genetics at the Department of Forensic Sciences, Oslo University Hospital (OUS).


The Forensic Genetics Research Group develops new methods and analytical approaches for biological trace evidence in criminal investigations. Our research focuses on advancing DNA and RNA-based technologies. Current research includes studies of RNA degradation to estimate the time since deposition of biological traces, microbiome analysis for forensic location inference, and development of new approaches for sampling and analysing human DNA from air and dust. The work involves laboratory methods such as collection and extraction of low-quality or low-quantity DNA samples, PCR and qPCR-based assays, multiplex assay development, capillary electrophoresis and sequencing, combined with statistical modelling and analysis of experimental data. The group works in close collaboration with the Section of Forensic Biology at OUS, a casework laboratory performing biological trace analysis for the Norwegian police and judiciary.

Duties and responsibilities


The successful candidate will contribute to research and development within forensic genetics, with a particular focus on laboratory-based method development and analysis of complex biological data. The position combines experimental laboratory research with quantitative data analysis and modelling.

Key tasks include:

  • Planning and contributing to research projects within forensic genetics
  • Laboratory work related to development and validation of new forensic methods
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation of research data
  • Development and implementation of new analytical approaches

Qualifications

  • PhD in forensic genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics or a closely related field

  • Solid experience with data analysis and statistical programming, preferably using R
  • Documented experience with research project management
  • Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary research environments

About the position

A postdoctoral fellowship is available at the PROMENTA Research Center, Department of Psychology, University of Oslo. The postdoctoral fellow will be working in the project Genomics and Life Paths: Unravelling the genetic and social interactions shaping social, economic and health inequalities funded by a infrastructure grant from the Swedish Research Council. 

The appointment is a fulltime position for a period of three years with 20 % teaching and administrative duties. 


More about the project and the PROMENTA Research Center

The purpose of the project is to increase our knowledge of the complex interplay between genes and environments in shaping our health and the position we occupy on the social and economic ladder. More specifically, we use the quickly increasing availability of large-scale genotype data across Europe, along with detailed register and survey data from several countries, to map out how specific genetic factors covary with and interact with our environmental exposures in producing variation in outcomes like mental health and health behaviours, education, income, political participation, social trust and other prosocial behaviours. The project aims at continuing to develop a world-class interdisciplinary research environment at the forefront of social science genomics.

The project is now searching for three new postdoctoral fellows across three different research nodes - one at Uppsala university, one at the University of Oslo and one at Amsterdam UMC. The three postdoctoral fellows will work closely in collaboration with each other as well as with other project members across all three nodes. A full description of the project can be found here.

The successful candidates are expected to conduct research with a focus on one or more of the core questions of the project. To facilitate research collaboration, the candidates will also spend some amount of time at the other two nodes.

Genomics and Life Paths have three overall objectives: 
1: Conducting several comprehensive Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) focusing on various life-course outcomes, with corresponding follow-ups and independent replications.
2: Cultivating and enhancing an international and interdisciplinary research setting by offering opportunities for a number of postdoctoral researchers to establish themselves in the field of social science genomics.
3: Lowering barriers of entry for researchers in the broader social science domain who are interested in integrating genomic data into their research endeavours. 

Genomics and Life Paths will integrate temporal, spatial, social, genetic, and individual levels of inference. Studying individuals with similar genetic profiles will allow to uncover the influences of time periods, places, schools, and families. This will allow us to jointly evaluate hypotheses on direct and indirect pathways into poor mental health, academic challenges, and workforce exclusion.

With Norwegian national registries giving full genealogy and year-by-year event data on place of residence, SES, mental health, and educational performance, the project will be in the position to consider the entire country since 1940. A population-based cohort study comprising 100 000 genotyped families with a wide array of survey data is nested within the population registry data. This investigation of the interplay between extended social arenas and family factors will help to grasp inequity in mental health and educational outcomes.

The PROMENTA Research Center carries out interdisciplinary research on mental health and well-being in a bioecological perspective - from genetics and biology to local communities and policy. We are concerned with examining determinants of good and poor mental health, understanding how social inequalities emerge, and designing and evaluating effective interventions to promote well-being.

We strive to provide our candidates with opportunities to develop high-quality research competence, across disciplines, working alongside leading experts in our fields. The postdoctoral fellow in Oslo will be based in the GeoGen workgroup at PROMENTA lead by Professor Eivind Ystrøm. The goal of the GeoGen workgroup is to study the interplay between genetic and contextual factors in families, schools, and wider contexts by integrating genotyped family trios into population-based registries on family structure, residence, schools, health, and education.

The postdoctoral fellow will be working with GeoGen Team members from Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Educational Sciences. The fellowships are planned to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements

  • The applicant must have submitted their PhD thesis for evaluation by the closing date and be approved by the time the appointing authority reaches a decision. The PhD degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent should be in in psychology, genetics, political science, sociology, epidemiology, economics, demography or other related fields.
  • Skills in relevant molecular genetic data analyses such as GWAS, polygenic scores, and GCTA.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Plans for excellent research within the project, as evidenced by the required one-page letter of application, explaining the motivation for applying and how own qualifications are suitable for the announced position.
     

Favourable qualifications (not requirements, but give applicants an advantage)

  • Motivation for teaching within the teaching portfolio of the Department of Psychology.
  • Strong interest in the potential of integrating mental health research, social science, and genetics.
  • Publication record on the genetics of mental health, educational, or demographical outcomes.

  • Experience with register data or other types of big data.
  • Training in application of genetic data.

About the position and research group

A three-year postdoc/researcher position in statistics is available at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), Department of Biostatistics, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB), University of Oslo (UiO), Norway. The candidate shall take part in the research group on “Statistical models for high-dimensional and functional data”, led by Professor Valeria Vitelli. Successful candidates will work on Bayesian models for unsupervised learning when multiple data sources are available, mostly tailored to the case of dynamic sequential inference and probabilistic recommender systems. 

The position is connected to the project “Bayesian Rank-based unsupervised Integration of multi-source Data in cancer Genomics and the digital Economy (BRIDGE)”, funded in 2025 by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) under the open scheme “Researcher Project for Scientific Renewal”, and it is fully funded for 3 years. The project is conducted in close collaboration with the SFF Integreat, The Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-driven Machine Learning (ML), a centre of excellence funded by RCN and in operation until 2033. 

The research group on statistical models for high-dimensional and functional data is part of the larger and active research environment on “High-dimensional statistics” at OCBE. OCBE has expanded considerably during the last decade, becoming one of Europe's most active internationally recognized biostatistics groups with currently over 70 researchers.


Main tasks for the position

The candidate will pursue research on Bayesian models for unsupervised learning when multiple data sources are available, mostly tailored to the case of dynamic sequential inference and probabilistic recommender systems. Emphasis will be placed on rank-based models and their successful use in probabilistic recommender systems, but many other research topics may also be relevant for the project, such as scalability, post-Bayesian methods, and in general computational and methodological challenges in integrative unsupervised learning. Method development will be motivated by the research questions of the funded project, but the candidate will be also free and encouraged to pursue her own research agenda.

Being part of a larger funded research project (3 positions in total), the candidate will work closely with other project members at OCBE to pursue common research objectives and will participate in regular project meetings. Therefore, ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is essential. The candidate for this position will specifically contribute to the project by successfully developing methods to integrate large and complex preference datasets with information at individual level, with specific attention to open and reproducible research, e.g., in the development of codes and algorithms. We will focus on devising computational solutions that can immediately be of use in other applications contexts as well. The candidate’s work will entail the development and implementation of statistical methods, as well as data analyses, preparation of manuscripts and communication of research findings. The funded research project team, as well as the broader research group on high-dimensional statistics at OCBE, provide a friendly and stimulating international research environment.


Qualifications requirements

Required qualification 

  • Applicants must hold a degree corresponding to a Norwegian doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, machine learning, mathematics, data science, computer science or another relevant field. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.
  • Strong quantitative and computational skills are required for this position. Applicants should be proficient in R, Python, or equivalent statistical software.
  • Some background knowledge in (computational) Bayesian methods and statistical learning for high-dimensional data is required.
  • Working language in the group and at OCBE is English, hence excellent communication skills in written and oral English are a prerequisite. Job description

The PhD Research Fellowship position is available under the project “miniCCS” at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, within the field of geological carbon storage, with a particular focus on in-situ CO₂ mineralization and the geological, geophysical, petrophysical and rock physical characterization of mafic and ultramafic geological formations, onshore Norway. The project addresses scientific and technical challenges related to permanent onshore CO₂ storage by injecting CO₂ into Norwegian mafic and ultramafic rock systems. 

The position is associated with ongoing research aimed at advancing understanding of mineral fluid interaction processes and their impact on subsurface architecture and petrophysical and rock physical evolution in mafic and ultramafic rocks during CO₂ injection and mineralization. Emphasis will be placed on the characterization of mafic and ultra-mafic igneous rocks, alteration processes, and the development of geological frameworks for in-situ mineralization following CO₂ injection.

The research will contribute to improved geological methods for site qualification, assessment of injectivity and storage performance, monitoring, long-term containment, and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements for onshore CO₂ storage.

The education in the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art seeks to provide theoretical and practical skills in Fine Art including artistic research and exploring new roles of artists in society at large. 

We expect the successful applicant to have significant experience with and relevant knowledge on exhibiting and cross-disciplinary curatorial strategies within art galleries, exhibition halls, museums, biennales and beyond. 

The bachelor's degree in visual arts requires Scandinavian language skills, while the international master’s degree in fine art is taught in English. 


Required selection criteria

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of assistant professor (code 1009) is normally from NOK 650 000 to NOK 850 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. About the position

We invite applications for a PhD Research Fellow position in Semiconductor Physics is available at Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology, the Department of Physics, University of Oslo. 

Preferred start date September 1, 2026. 

The fellowship period is three years.

A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Job description

A PhD Research Fellow is available at Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo (UiO), within the Centre for Defects in Semiconductors for Quantum Sensing (DSQS). DSQS is one of four national research centers within quantum technology in Norway. DSQS is experimentally oriented center for physical realization of quantum technology using point defects in semiconductors. Point defects, e.g. a missing atom or a small defect complex, can act as artificial atoms for use in quantum communication and computing, or as in the present project, as quantum sensors. Such defects are often termed as quantum defects, highlighted for example by NV-centers after the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. At DSQS, we aim to explore emerging candidates for quantum defect components in silicon and silicon carbide, discover novel and previously unknown defects in other quantum materials, and further develop the NV center toward practical applications. DSQS aims to build a competitive research environment that spans over a large portion of the value chain - from fundamental understanding of materials and defects to integration and sensing applications. The Norwegian partners are the University of Oslo, SINTEF and Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) as well as international collaboration envisaged with Nordic partners in Denmark and Sweden.

In this context, the present PhD Research Fellow will contribute to the DSQS by focusing on formation and identification of quantum defects. The work of the PhD Research Fellow will be of experimental character. In particular, PhD Research Fellow will deal with:

  • Design of quantum defect formation schemes 
  • Investigation of defect formation in diamond, Si and SiC by ion implantation and annealing 
  • Fabrication of simple electronic and nanophotonic devices 
  • Optical and electrical characterization of quantum emitters
  • Defect modeling and identification

The PhD research fellow will be affiliated with the Solid-State Physics and Quantum Technology research group at UiO with around 60 highly dedicated professors, researchers, postdocs, PhD Research Fellows, engineers, administrative staff and master students. The research group has an excellent infrastructure, MiNaLab, covering chemical, structural, optical and electrical characterization methods, material growth, device fabrication and simulations. The PhD Research Fellow will also be affiliated with the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology, which is an interdisciplinary research centre in materials science and nanotechnology at UiO. The Centre is an international leader in basic science within functional materials and nanoscience, with applications within renewable energy, materials science, and nanotechnology.

The infrastructure includes the Micro- and Nanotechnology Laboratory (MiNaLab) with a clean room area in excess of 400 m2 with a multitude of modern fabrication and characterization facilities. The PhD Research Fellow will be closely knit with the supervisors’ other projects and activities, and in several cases work in a larger team with colleagues at the University of Oslo


What skills are important in this role?

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in physics or materials science
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Solid background in semiconductor physics 
  • Strong data analysis skills

Candidates without a master’s degree have until August 31, 2026 to complete the final exam.

Desired qualifications:

To or more of the below; 

  • Experience with semiconductor defect formation using ion implantation
  • Experience with optical defect characterization, particularly using luminescence spectroscopy (or related techniques)
  • Experience with electrical defect characterization, particularly using deep level transient spectroscopy (or related techniques)
  • Experience with quantum defects and quantum defect characterization
  • Experience with defect modeling using density functional theory or related techniques
  • Experience with data analysis using, e.g., Origin, Python or MatLab
  • Programming skills, e.g. proficient with Labview or Python

  • The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
