Project Description - PhD Position in Sustainable AI for the Environment Promoting a Green Transition

In recent years, there is a need for studying and using sustainable AI methods to head towards a green transition. This is particularly important for environmental initiatives to achieve the targeted 2050 climate neutral goals of the EU as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). These initiatives are in line with Denmark’s ambitious 2045 climate neutrality target as well. Promising research directions in the initiatives include investigating sustainable machine learning approaches and addressing renewable energy related projects. Likewise, deploying a novel paradigm of KGML (knowledge guided machine learning) can propel further research.

PhD candidate responsibilities:

The PhD candidate will be responsible for conducting research and implementation in areas such as:

  • Exploring KGML in environmental science, e.g. in renewable energy related projects; this can entail working alongside domain experts to extract relevant knowledge, and programming using suitable models to infuse that knowledge with ML methods, thus aiming to optimize performance and interpretability, analogous to RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) in LLMs

  • Investigating methods for improving AI model sustainability, e.g. model compression techniques (such as quantization and pruning), carbon-aware computing, minimizing algorithmic complexity, maintenance requirements, mapping energy efficiency and related aspects using KPI (key performance indicators) with respect to ESG (environmental, social, governance) parameters.

  • Developing tools and prototypes (programs, mobile apps, or web interfaces) to validate and dissiminate research findings (e.g., systems for environmental decision support, urban planning, energy optimization, etc.). Designing knowledge bases for further use in KGML; and investigating the use of KGML and Interpretable AI to explain complex green transition concepts to users (e.g., via intelligent tutoring system (ITS) or interactive interfaces).

Qualifications for application:

The candidate should complete a Master’s degree (MS / MSc / MTech / ME etc.) in Computer Science or Information Technology or Software Engineering or Artificial Intelligence or Data Science or Environmental Science or any other relevant field, prior to admission into this PhD program.

Required skills (mandatory):

  • Strong understanding of sustainable AI or related areas

  • Experience of programming in Python / C / Java or equivalent

  • Experience with using Machine Learning software, e.g. PyTorch / TensorFlow / Scikit Learn

  • Highly knowledgeable in mathematical and statistical concepts

  • Solid foundation in mathematics for Machine Learning (Linear Algebra, Probability, Optimization).

  • Proficient in English for technical writing, oral presentations, and general communication

Additional experience (preferred):

  • Familiarity with the KGML paradigm and its implementation

  • Working with domain experts in Environmental Science & Engineering

  • Expertise in model compression techniques like quantization and pruning

  • Successful development of apps and websites with real-world deployment

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Experimental Linguistics Laboratory (ELL)
STATSBYGG SØR UNIVERSITETET I AGDER GIMLEMOEN
Norway, KRISTIANSAND S

About the position

A fixed-term 100 % position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Humanities and Education, as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow affiliated to the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation, for a period of three years. The position is located at the University of Agder’s Kristiansand campus. The proposed starting date is the 1st of September 2026.

About the Faculty: https://www.uia.no/en/about-uia/faculties/faculty-of-humanities-and-education

The position is funded by the University of Agder and is linked to the ERC Synergy research project entitled Phonological cognisance and allied linguistic representations: acquisition, bilingualism, change and script (PAAL) 2025-2031. This international project is a collaboration between the Universities of Agder in Norway, Radboud in the Netherlands, and Oxford in the U.K. The project will investigate the representation of phonological knowledge and its relationship to script. This includes investigating how script interacts with representations in (morpho-)phonological alternations as well as generalisations about constraints on phonological representations in terms of features, size and shapes of morphemes, tone and metrical structures. Phonology governs processes that are examined in a number of different fields of research, namely first and second language acquisition and processing and language change. Currently, each field employs different models of the sound structure of language. The overarching aim of the research is to develop a unified theory. The project is therefore interdisciplinary, involving a collaboration between the fields of theoretical phonology, historical linguistics, psycho/neurolinguistics, and language acquisition.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate for this position will contribute to the Synergy project within the Experimental Linguistics Laboratory (ELL) https://www.uia.no/english/research/research-groups/humanities-and-education/experimental-linguistics.html run by Professors Linda Wheeldon and Allison Wetterlin. The focus of this position is on adult language processing (comprehension and production) in both spoken and written modalities. The majority of the research will involve the testing of Norwegian-English bilingual speakers. A suite of cognitive and linguistic experiments will be designed to investigate the effect of first language phonological representation and knowledge on the processing of second language English as part of a comparitive study including other Germanic languages. The research will employ eye-tracking and EEG methodologies. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow (RF) will be fully involved in the design, running, analysis and dissemination of the research. The project will support the career development of the RF by enabling the development of their research expertise in a theoretically broad and methodologically demanding project. The expectation is that the postdoctoral researcher will be the first author on several publications.

Importantly, the successful candidate will aslo be involved in the project as a whole. The research will be run in collaboration with Prof. Paula Fikkert (Centre for Language Studies, Radboud University) and Prof. Aditi Lahiri (Language and Brain Laboratory, Oxford University). The RF will therefore have opportunities to engage in international and interdisciplinary collaborations.
