UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Human-Robot Interaction is available at the Department of Informatics, Robotics and Intelligent Systems Research Group (ROBIN), University of Oslo.

Starting date no later than 10.08.2026 or as soon as possible. The fellowship period is three years.

Depending on the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended for either for compulsory work consisting of e.g., teaching and supervision duties and research assistance up top four years.

Place of work is Department of Informatics, Robotics and Intelligent Systems, at Gaustad/Blindern, Oslo.

Job description

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work in the project “Robots as Welfare Technologies and Actors for ELderly Care: A Nordic Model for Integration of Advanced Assistive Technologies (ROBOWELL)”, funded by NordForsk and Novo Nordic Foundation (grant agreement 226198).

The project aims to develop a proposal for a Nordic Model for integrating social and assistive robots as welfare technologies and actors in elderly care. This is for addressing challenges posed by the aging population and the shortage of nursing staff across Nordic countries.

Previous research in the Nordic region's welfare tradition illustrates the use of welfare technologies like fall alarms, cameras, tablets, and computers. However, more complex welfare technologies such as AI-driven technologies, including social and assistive robots might challenge the current practical, ethical, and legal existing infrastructures, or models around the integration of welfare technologies in the care systems for elderly people.

As a PhD candidate, you will conduct user studies on the integration of AI-driven social robots, or socially assistive robots (SARs) within the elderly care, involving both old adults and healthcare professionals in your research, to explore the benefits and tensions across technical, ethical and regulatory aspects, and assess the impact of robots on care workflows. The key goal of the PhD project is to develop a proposal for a Nordic Model for sustainable robot integration in care set-tings, having the Norwegian context in focus. You will publish results in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences.

The overall ROBOWELL project is a Nordic Project taking place in Norway (University of Oslo, project leader), Sweden (KTH Royal Institute of Technology), and Denmark (University of Southern Denmark), together with relevant stakeholders in each country. Your main tasks are to be conducted in Norway, but you are expected to contribute to the overall project, and exchange knowledge with the other project partners. Travels within the Nordic countries and to other countries as part of the PhD are expected.

The position will give you a unique opportunity to contribute to the future model of integration of robots as welfare technologies and actors within elderly care, and beyond.

Job description

This position is part of The Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI), one of Norway’s six national AI centres. NCEI brings together leading robotics and AI groups with key partners from industry and the public sector to study how intelligence emerges from the interaction between body, computation, and environment, across flying, ground, and aquatic robot configurations. Our mission is to chart a generalisable path for physical AI and transform how robot morphology and autonomy are co-designed, enabling new generations of systems tailored to their operational environments and missions. You will join an international community with world-class facilities and strong collaborations across Norwegian universities, research institutes, industry, public agencies, and leading global institutions.

The PhD fellow will work on co-design of morphology and control, with an emphasis on testing on real-world platforms. This includes building a physical robot system that can be used in the project to explore iterative evolution of not only the way a robot acts, but also its physical body. They will build on the work done by others in simulation on virtual robots, and provide a physical robot that can help test how the proposed approaches react to real-world environments.

What the PhD fellow will work on, in collaboration with the rest of the team:
•    Design and build physical robots that can be mechanically reconfigured and iteratively improved.
•    Integrate and test autonomy stacks (perception, learning, planning) on physical robots.
•    Use evolutionary algorithms to optimize both the robot’s body and brain together.
•    Apply quality-diversity methods to discover a wide range of high-performing designs                                                                               •    Run experiments across classes of environments (e.g., forests, industrial facilities, underwater caves) and missions (e.g., exploration, surveillance, object search and recovery).
•    Collaborate closely with the rest of the NCEI center working on simulation, learning, and planning to ensure successful transfer from virtual to real-world systems.
•    Document results, publish in top venues, and contribute to open-source tools where possible.

PhD Research Fellow in ML-assisted reservoir characterization/modelling for CO2 storage
UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in ML-assisted reservoir characterization/modelling for CO2 storage in volcano-sedimentary systems available at Department of Geosciences

Starting date 15.02.2026.

The fellowship period is three years.

A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Job description

The VISTA Centre “VICCO” at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo (UiO) seeks a highly motivated candidate for a PhD research fellowship aimed at de-risking CO2 storage in volcano-sedimentary systems offshore Norway. The PhD research project targets ML-assisted quantitative interpretation and geomechanical modeling by integrating seismic, well log, lab and literature data to de-risk potential CO2 storage sites associated with volcaniclastic lithologies offshore Norway. The research outcomes will lead to better understanding of the geological heterogeneity of reservoir, seal and overburden rocks that may impact seal integrity, fluid injectivity, storage performance, plume evolution, and pressure-build ups in potential multi-site storage licenses. The research will help to suggest best practices for machine learning integration in de-risking CO2 storage sites. We seek a candidate with a strong background in one or more of the fields of rock physics, petrophysics, seismic attribute analysis, seismic inversion (both pre- and post-stack inversions), and machine learning with geoscience knowledge, preferably in seal/reservoir/overburden heterogeneities, static and dynamic reservoir modelling, and flow simulation. The candidate will work in a team of geologists, geophysicists, geochemists and staff with strong machine learning and numerical modelling background to add knowledge on the impact of geological heterogeneity and subsurface environments (e.g., depth, exhumation, temperature, pressure) to de-risk CO2 storage possibilities in volcano sedimentary systems, offshore Norway. There will be a close collaboration between UiO and other research institutes and industries participating in the VISTA centre “VICCO”. The study areas will be selected based on the VICCO centre's focus and guidance from industry partners.

Project description

The PhD will be part of the new VISTA centre “VICCO”. The centre will advance Norway’s expertise in CCS in volcano-sedimentary systems, as well as support the global implementation of CCS at a large scale. The key focus of the project is to characterize CO2 storage possibilities in sedimentary systems containing variable  amounts of volcaniclastic sediments (such as airfall ash), and their potential role in promoting mineral carbonation in the Norwegian North Sea. Due to heterogeneity and anisotropic behaviors, these potential reservoir rocks pose challenges related to injectivity, mineralization, fluid migration, plume evolution and pressure build up. The goal is to gain quantitative understanding of reservoir and sealing / overburden units by integrating petrophysics, rock physics, geophysics, geomechanics and machine learning. A detailed project plan will be developed in collaboration with the successful candidate at the start of PhD.

What skills are important in this role?

Welke middag? Iedereen is gelijk in waarde. Alles gaat in goed overleg. Laten we kennismaken!
