Hyggelig, ung voksen mann søker assistenter på Senja
BPA NORD AS AVD SENJA
Norway, SILSAND

Men personlig egnethet vil bli prioritert høyest.

Mye mer enn bare penger

PhD Research Fellow in Multisensory Networked Interactions with Robotics Avatars
UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON
Norway, OSLO

About the position

We invite applications for position as PhD Research Fellow in Multisensory Networked Interactions with Robotics Avatars available at Department of Informatics.

The fellowship period is three years. Depending on the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship period can be extended either for compulsory work consisting of e.g. teaching and supervision duties and research assistance up top four years.

Starting date as soon as possible.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Place of work is the Department of Informatics at Blindern, Oslo.

Job description

The PhD fellowship position is located at the Department of Informatics and is hosted jointly by the Network and Distributed Systems Research Group and the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Research Group. The research groups consist of around 30 full- and part-time faculty members and several postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The research groups conduct research in various areas of mobile network systems, multimedia and AR/VR/XR systems, robotics and machine learning, focusing on fundamental aspects as well as on applications in multidisciplinary contexts.

This position is part of the DRIVE project, funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) (2026-2030), focusing on brain-driven multi-sensory robotic avatars for remote collaborative physical work. The DRIVE project involves Simula Research Laboratory and University of Texas at Austin, USA, as partners. In addition, this PhD candidate will be able to participate and exploit synergies with the National AI Centre for AI and Creativity (MishMash), led by University of Oslo, funded by the RCN (2025-2030).

The successful candidate will join the Sustainable Immersive Networking Lab (SINLAB), a multidisciplinary team working on systems that enable users to act in remote physical spaces and experience the effects of their actions through multimodal feedback (audio, video, haptics). While SINLAB addresses applications in health, industry, education, sports, entertainment and creative domains, the focus of the PhD candidate will be on remote collaborative physical work especially the real-time interaction among humans and between humans and a remote environment.

The main challenge with such networked interactions is that haptic feedback has very stringent delay requirements as low as 20 milliseconds. Therefore, performing such actions remotely with both action and reaction traversing long distances is far beyond our technical capabilities today. Even the developments in 5G and beyond networks that specifically target significant latency reductions are not sufficient due to physical as well as resource limitations.

The core research objective of this PhD is to design and evaluate “latency hiding” methods for immersive networked interactions. This involves (i) developing predictive machine learning models that forecast user actions and remote system responses across audio, video and haptic modalities, and (ii) jointly orchestrating network and computing resources to compensate for the gap between physical latency limits and human perceptual tolerances. The work will comprise designing networking and computing architectures that integrate prediction and control algorithms, optimizing data transformations, offloading and distributed computing, and exploiting mechanisms such as network slicing and multi-access edge computing. The overarching goal is to guarantee perceptual latency budgets and to devise embodiment recovery strategies when these budgets are exceeded, enabling consistent, realistic and cognitively coherent remote physical interaction with robotic avatars.

About the NeuroPathways Convergence Environment and the PhD project
Convergence Environments are interdisciplinary research groups that aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment. They are funded by UiO's interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science.

Neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and autism are being diagnosed more than ever — but why, and with what consequences? NeuroPathways is an interdisciplinary Convergence Environment that brings together psychology, genetics, pharmacology, education, and clinical research to address questions about neurodevelopmental variability that cannot be answered within disciplinary silos. The NeuroPathways research environment bridges biomedical and social science perspectives to examine how genetic predispositions and environments — from clinics to classrooms — jointly shape developmental outcomes, using Norway’s exceptional registry and cohort data to study why diagnoses are rising, who receives assessment and support, which interventions work best for whom, and how support systems can become more equitable and inclusive.

This PhD position has a genetics-oriented focus. The PhD fellow will work with large-scale longitudinal and family-based data, including genomic data, population registers, and cohort studies, to investigate how genetic predispositions relate to neurodevelopmental outcomes across childhood and adolescence, and how these relationships vary across social and environmental contexts.

About the NeuroPathways Convergence Environment and the postdoc project

Convergence Environments are interdisciplinary research groups that aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment. They are funded by UiO's interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science.

Neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and autism are being diagnosed more than ever — but why, and with what consequences? NeuroPathways is an interdisciplinary Convergence Environment that brings together psychology, genetics, pharmacology, education, and clinical research to address questions about neurodevelopmental variability that cannot be answered within disciplinary silos. The NeuroPathways research environment bridges biomedical and social science perspectives to examine how genetic predispositions and environments — from clinics to classrooms — jointly shape developmental outcomes, using Norway’s exceptional registry and cohort data to study why diagnoses are rising, who receives assessment and support, which supports work best for whom, and how support systems can become more equitable and inclusive.

The postdoc position is part of the overall project’s Work Package on Neuropsychosocial Pathways, a collaboration between the PROMENTA Center and the Clinical Section at the Department of Psychology. This work package aims to understand how personal, social, geographical, and clinic factors together influence the likelihood of neurodevelopmental diagnoses, access to services, use of medications, and long-term outcomes. The candidate will work with diverse data, including Norwegian national registries and the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child cohort (MoBa), a pregnancy cohort including more than 100,000 children and their families with genetic data and follow-up into adulthood. Rich data will also be available from two ongoing randomized controlled trials at Lovisenberg and Innlandet hospitals.

The postdoc fellow will be embedded in the interdisciplinary NeuroPathways Convergence Environment, which includes strong links to the PsychGen Centre at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Lovisenberg Diaconal Hospital, and the national FRAMBU center for rare diagnoses. The candidate will develop their postdoctoral project in collaboration with work the package leaders, Professors Alexandra Havdahl and Krister Fjermestad. Prof Astrid Sandsør at Centre for Research on Equality in Education – CREATE) will serve as mentor of the candidate. An additional core team comprising Dr. Rosa Cheesman (Department of Psychology, University of Oslo), Dr Nicolai Borgen (CREATE) and Prof. Hedvig Nordeng (Department of Pharmacy) will be collaborators in the team supporting and promoting the candidate.

The postdoc fellow will collaborate closely with researchers across the NeuroPathways Team, including experts in psychology and genetics, education and inequality, pharmacoepidemiology, and clinical psychology. The postdoc fellow will work with advanced quantitative methods, contribute to joint publications within NeuroPathways, and participate in interdisciplinary seminars and training activities.

The career-promoting work will involve supervision, dissemination activities, development of educational material, support for other researchers, organization of scientific activities, and administrative responsibilities within the NeuroPathways convergence environment.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
