About the position

A PhD position in the field of functional materials for future quantum technology is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. 

The project aims to fabricate novel quantum materials that unify topological and magnetic properties, enabling completely new interface functionalities in future spintronics. 

The project combines elements from physics (magnetic and topological properties), chemistry/material technology (fabrication of nanomaterials) and electronics (quantum devices).  This project is interdisciplinary, and the PhD candidate will be part of a larger group using pulsed laser deposition as a tool to engineer new quantum materials. The group is within the Functional Materials and Materials Chemistry Research Group (FACET – http://www.ntnu.edu/ima/research/facet). 

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

We are seeking a PhD candidate to perform experimental research using pulsed laser deposition of thin films, combining Van der Waals materials (topological insulators) with Perovskite oxides (magnetic oxides) to fabricate emerging interface properties. 

The position will focus on the electronic reconstruction of the interface, developing ways to characterize the topological features of the material. 

• To fabricate heterostructures using pulsed laser deposition
• To fabricate electronic devices with lithography
• To actively take part in the multidisciplinary activity of the research group (project meetings, workshops, etc.).
• To characterize electronic and magnetic functionality
• To actively apply for beamtime at international synchrotron/neutron facilities and take part in such measurement
• To actively take part in the guidance of master students in the group.
• To develop and disseminate research results on the subject through scientific publications.

Required selection criteria

• The candidate must have a completed master’s degree (or equivalent), and your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level 
• The candidate must have a strong academic background in the field of solid-state physics, materials science, materials chemistry, electronics engineering, nanotechnology or equivalent, and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd
• The applicants are required to justify their candidateship by explicitly explaining their personal motivation and academic aptitude for pursuing a doctoral degree within this research field.

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The period of employment is 3 years for the doctoral work with the possibility of extending to four years with teaching duties.

About the position

The position is part of the research project “Prediction of genetic values and adaptive potential in the wild (GPWILD)” (https://www.ntnu.no/gjaerevoll/gpwild), funded through a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). A major goal of the project is to develop cutting-edge statistical methodology to analyse and make predictions from large-scale genomic data, which is currently generated for many wild animal populations. To this end, the project combines modern statistical methodology and builds on the current state-of-the art in animal breeding, human genomics, ecology and evolutionary biology. The post-doc will thus work with a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and can contribute towards the development of methods that will make an impact to better understand evolution and the robustness of wild anmial populations, with the ultimate goal to help preserving biodiversity.

The post-doc will work at NTNU in Trondheim, and the fellowship will be hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences (https://www.ntnu.edu/imf). The project is a close collaboration with evolutionary ecologists from the Department of Biology (https://www.ntnu.edu/biology) and the Gjærevoll Centre (https://www.ntnu.edu/gjaerevoll) at NTNU, as well as with international researchers in the field.

The successful applicant will be offered a 3,5 year position, including 6 months for career enhancing work.

Duties of the position

• Develop and implement new efficient and accurate statistical methods for genomic prediction, as well as for the decomposition of phenotypic variance into components relevant for evolutionary processes. This is done using genomic data from wild animal populations.
• Use the new methods to derive insight into evolutionary processes of the study systems of our collaborators.
• Core components of the research involve, among others, Bayesian hierarchical modelling, shrinkage methods, machine learning (ML) or dimension reduction approaches, generalized linear mixed modeling, and performing simulations using specialized statistical programming tools.
• Writing and publishing papers in international, peer-reviewed journals.
• An important part of the project is collaboration with evolutionary biologists, mostly at NTNU, but also internationally. The post-doc is therefore expected to maintain and nourish these collaborations, as well as disseminate their statistical research to a broader scientific audience.
• Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions.
• Teaching and other career enhancing duties such as mentoring PhD and Master students.
• The cadidate is expected to show a high level of initiative, motivation and independence for research and writing.

Required selection criteria

• You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Statistics or equivalent.

The project focuses on developing AI-supported approaches to improve how large public building portfolios are evaluated and managed. You will work with real use cases and contribute to research that aims to make decision processes more consistent, transparent, and evidence-based.

You will collaborate with a broad network of internal and external partners, including practitioners, domain experts, and researchers. This provides a unique opportunity to combine academic research with practical application in a highly relevant societal context.

About the project

The PhD project is part of a broader effort to develop AI-supported decision frameworks for public asset management, with a focus on improving evaluation, prioritization, and long-term planning of building portfolios. The work will explore how AI can support more consistent and data-informed assessments while maintaining a human-in-the-loop approach where expert judgment remains central.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTNU, SINTEF Digital, and the Department of Engineering Cybernetics. It is conducted in close collaboration with Statsbygg and other relevant public building owners and authorities.

The research is embedded in the Norwegian Center on AI for Decisions (aiD), ensuring strong interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, research institutes, and public sector partners.

Siemens zoekt een enthousiaste Service Engineer voor de divisie Smart Infrastructure. Deze afdeling levert geïntegreerde klantgerichte oplossingen. We zoeken versterking binnen Brandveiligheid (brandbeveiliging en -detectie, alarm en evacuatie, blussystemen, risicobeheer).

U zult werken in de regio Brussel en de periferie van Brussel.

Als service engineer start je met een intensieve on-the-job training. Eerst loopt u mee met een ervaren collega om onze klanten, systemen en werkwijze goed te leren kennen. Daarna ga je steeds zelfstandiger aan de slag en past u uw technische kennis actief toe.

Uw taken

Deze zullen variëren en evolueren op basis van uw ervaring en technische kennis.

• Correctief en preventief onderhoud van veldapparatuur en werkstations, zodat de systemen van onze klanten optimaal blijven functioneren.
• Uw analytisch vermogen en probleemoplossend denken stellen u in staat om de drijvende kracht te zijn achter onderhoud, updates en vernieuwing van installaties bij de klant
• Uitvoeren van uitbreidingen en moderniseringen van subsystemen en integraties met andere systemen
• Uitvoeren van software-updates of upgrades volgens project of contractuele overeenkomst met de klant
• Verzorgen van systeemtraining voor gebruikers bij de klant
• Controleren van alle technische dossiers en indien nodig aanpassingen laten uitvoeren door het engineering team

Wij zijn momenteel op zoek naar een Commissioning Engineer Fire Safety om het team in regio Brussel/Vlaams-Brabant te versterken. Indien nodig spring je ook bij in andere regio’s.

Jouw taken:

• Je voornaamste taken zijn  troubleshooting, testen, programmering  en optimalisering van onze producten. Hierover  rapporteer je grondig en gericht.  
• Als commissioning engineer ben je dagelijks op de baan om installaties bij klanten te verzorgen. Je verkrijgt de benodigde technische informatie via de project manager. Op termijn zal je steeds meer proactief voorstellen mogen doen f.v. de projecten. Bij de klant sta je in voor het  controleren, testen  en programmeren van de installatie. Op basis hiervan definieer je ook de te nemen acties i.f.v. veiligheid, preventie en probleemdetectie.  
• Je bent eveneens verantwoordelijk voor het detecteren en analyseren van storingen, zowel bij inbedrijfstelling als bij bestaande installaties.  
• Je houdt zorgvuldig je  technische dossiers bij en rapporteert prestaties en afwijkingen.  
• Als technisch expert  blijf je op de hoogte van technische ontwikkelingen zodat je klanten steeds van een professionele en hoogst kwalitatieve service kunt voorzien.  
• Jouw  proactieve en probleemoplossingsgerichte  mindset zorgen ervoor dat je doorheen het hele proces in dialoog blijft met de klant en de project managers. Je  schat de situatie in op de werf,  identificeert en concretiseert de wensen van je klant en  vertaalt deze naar onze systemen. Je fungeert als  technische customer service ter plaatse. 

Jouw vaardigheden:

• Je hebt een Bachelor in Elektromechanica/ Elektronica of gelijkwaardig door professionele ervaring. 
• Gepassioneerd ga je aan de slag en je vertoont een grote interesse en/of affiniteit met  brandveiligheids  – en beveiligingssystemen, - normen en – installaties. 
• Kennis van IT en interesse voor complexe IT-systemen is een must 
• Je houdt ervan autonoom en proactief te werken.
• Je bent flexibel naar projectinhoud en uurroosters toe. Op termijn ben je bereid in een wachtsysteem mee te draaien.  
• Je weet jouw klanten goed te woord te staan in het Nederlands en Frans. Professionele kennis van Engels is een grote meerwaarde.

Jouw taken:

• Het verzekeren van het onderhoud volgens de regels van de kunst (met een focus op teogangscontrole/CCTV/Inbraakdetectie).
• Het uitvoeren van aanpassingen aan security installaties bij klanten. Dit kunnen kleine aanpassingen zijn, maar je kan ook in indienstname activiteiten van grotere installaties ingeschakeld worden.
• Controleren van alle technische dossiers en daar waar nodig aanpassingen laten uitvoeren door het engineering team.
• Controleren van de bij de klant geplaatste materialen in functie van de materiaallijsten die aan de serviceovereenkomst gelinkt zijn en verschillen doorgeven aan de service administratie.
• Operationele assistentie bieden aan klanten, on site of remote.
• Het adviseren en bijstaan van klanten betreffende het optimaliseren van hun security installatie.
• Permanente co-working met collega field engineers, small work engineers en service verantwoordelijken.
• Support leveren aan collega engineers.
• Het aansturen van onze subcontractors ter plaatse.
• Updaten, upgraden en migreren van bestaande systemen.
• Je versterkt de wachtdienst.

Jouw vaardigheden:

• Je beschikt over Graduaat of Bachelor elektriciteit, elektromechanica of gelijkwaardig door ervaring.
• Je bent Nederlandstalig. Frans & Engels zijn een plus.

4 jaar geleden besloot ik na 11 jaar dat een kapsalon méér mocht zijn dan een plek waar je even snel je haren laat doen.
