The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a vacant position in drinking water / wastewater systems. The position is affiliated with the department’s Water and Wastewater Engineering Group. The group is responsible for teaching in various areas, including urban water management, infrastructure asset management, drinking water and wastewater treatment, water chemistry and hydro-informatics. The group has a broad portfolio of national and international research and education projects and is involved in many relevant national and international networks.
We are seeking an innovative, creative, and responsible candidate to lead teaching and research activities in water and wastewater systems.
Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.
Duties of the position
- Teaching & Supervision – Deliver lectures, labs and seminars and supervise Bachelor, Master and PhD students
- Curriculum Development – Actively contribute to the development and delivery of high‑quality education
- Research – Conduct independent and collaborative research on topics such as hydraulic network modelling and optimization, infrastructure resilience and risk assessment, smart sensor integration and data analytics, water quality dynamics in transport systems, integration of green infrastructure, and sustainable urban drainage systems
- Dissemination – Publish in high level peer‑reviewed journals, present at conferences, and secure external funding (grants, contracts, industry partnerships)
- Strategic Contribution – Contribute to the group’s overall research agenda by preparing large‑scale proposals and developing strategic projects
- Networking – Expand and deepen national and international professional research networks
- University Community – Actively participate in the university’s broader research community (seminars, workshops, committees)
- Administration – Perform administrative duties related to education, research and innovation activities
Required qualifications
Professor:
You must have the following qualifications required for the position of professor:
- A doctoral degree in civil/environmental engineering or another related field with a strong focus on urban water systems
- High-quality knowledge of urban water system modelling, monitoring and management. This should include at least one (preferably both) of the following: Urban drainage systems, water distribution systems
- Experience with planning, management and execution of measurement and field campaigns
- Educational experience
- Proficient communication skills in English and Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills at level B2
Additional requirements for professor must be documented:
- Quality development in own teaching and supervision over time and a high degree of reflection on own practice
- Broad experience with supervision, preferably at master's/PhD level
- Initiate, lead and/or participate in the development of educational quality in the academic communities
- Competence in knowledge in use (innovation, dissemination and interaction with society) and/or
- Academic leadership and elected posts/appointed roles
Associate professor:
You must have the following qualifications required for the position of associate professor:
- A doctoral degree in civil/environmental engineering or another related field with a strong focus on urban water systems
- High-quality knowledge of urban water system modelling, monitoring and management. This should include at least one (preferably both) of the following: Urban drainage systems, water distribution systems.

For both positions:
You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level B2of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
Preferred qualifications
- Research and development work relevant to the position. Scientific production from the last six years will be emphasized.
- Strong pedagogical skills and teaching experience, including (co-)supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD candidates, with the ability to motivate, engage, and inspire both students and colleagues
- A well-developed national/international research and/or industrial network
- Experience from grant application development and evaluation
- Project leader experience and experience with management of larger research projects/programs
- Knowledge/Experience in infrastructure planning and design on a city/catchment scale
- Sensor technology, including low-cost and non-contact sensors
Personal qualities
- Excellent cooperation, communication and dissemination skills
- Highly motivated for career in research and education
- Highly interested to work in multidisciplinary teams

As Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 750 000 – NOK 950 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. Professor (code 1013) you are normally paid from gross NOK 950 000 – NOK 1 150 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance withthe regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.
