The SoftiMAX beamline at MAX IV Laboratory is offering an 8-week summer student project focused on extending the lifetime of STXM zone plates through controlled in-house cleaning and process validation. Background / motivation In soft X-ray Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM), the zone plate is the main focusing optic and a critical, high-value component. During experiments the zone plate can be illuminated for days to weeks by intense soft X-rays (≈250–2500 eV) under vacuum (~10⁻⁵ mbar). In the presence of residual hydrocarbons this often leads to visible carbon contamination (also observed on other optical surfaces), degrading performance. Developing a gentle, repeatable cleaning process would directly benefit beamline operations and user experiments by keeping zone plates usable for longer. Project goal Design, implement, and characterize a gentle UV/ozone-based cleaning method in a controlled atmosphere, and establish a repeatable “dose vs. carbon removal” recipe using test samples. The work will include both hardware and measurement/validation. What you will do - Prepare and contaminate test substrates (Si₃N₄ chips) using an in-house carbon deposition system to create controlled “carbon layers” - Build and instrument a small UV/ozone cleaning chamber (stainless/quartz, fume hood compatible), with basic sensing (e.g., ozone trend, humidity/temperature) and safe operating procedures - Implement a simple controller/data logger (Arduino or Raspberry Pi) to run reproducible cleaning cycles (timing, purge steps, logging) - Quantify cleaning performance and repeatability using optical inspection (optical microscope) and, where available, access to advanced characterization methods (potentially including STXM and/or AFM) - Deliver a short operating procedure and recommended cleaning parameters suitable for routine beamline use, plus a brief report of results. Who you are - Background in Physics, Engineering, Electronics, Materials Science, or a related field - Comfortable with hands-on lab work and basic instrumentation - Experience (or strong interest) in programming microcontrollers / embedded systems (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Python, C/C++) - Interest in microscopy, surface science, vacuum systems, optics, or beamline instrumentation is a plus - Safety-minded and conscientious with experimental procedures. About the role We require a passionate and knowledgeable geologist with leadership or management experience. The chosen candidate will work on a variety of iron ore mining projects for a globally recognised miner, and is responsible for implementing workflow procedures based on direction from the company’s General Manager, specifically responsible for the AES staff and operations within Gällivare. The duties include supervising employees during day-to-day tasks and managing the overall workflow within the workplace. The candidate will be responsible for supervising geological and geotechnical data collection on projects at different development stages ranging from greenfield exploration to feasibility studies to advanced production stages, within the ‘Malmfälten’ mining Province of Northern Sweden. Main responsibilities Supervision of geological and geotechnical data-collection, ensuring best practice is followed. Assist with recruitment when required, plan the introduction, training and development of current and new staff. Staff performance evaluation, development talks and salary talks. Address physical or psychosocial workplace issues and risks. Undertake actions to create a safe, respectful and inclusive team environment, ensuring employees adhere to the company’s policies and guidelines. Audit and perform adequate quality control checks of various data sets, overseeing QA/QC protocols to ensure the highest quality of data. Education and qualifications The candidate must have a BSc or MSc degree in Geology or Geotechnical Engineering. Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate fluently in English in both speaking and writing is mandatory. Knowledge of Swedish is advantageous. A full, clean driving license is also mandatory for this position. Location The position will be based in Gälliavre, although travel to other locations in Sweden is sometimes required. The Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Technology is seeking associate senior lecturers to contribute to our growing activities. The position is located at the Division of Space Technology in Kiruna. The division offers a number of Master Degree programs in Space Science and Technology. The division conducts research in the areas of atmospheric science and space systems. The Space Systems group focuses on payloads, spacecraft and launchers for technology demonstration and utilisation as well as space applications and exploration in the upper atmosphere, Earth orbit and planetary space. The research and education activities are supported by high-quality infrastructure such as laboratory facilities for rocket propulsion, small satellites, asteroid engineering, and space avionics. Subject description Space systems includes systems for control, instrumentation and communication in the upper atmosphere and in space. Of particular importance are reliable, radiation resistant low-power electronic systems and miniaturization of these. Project description Luleå University of Technology will start an interdisciplinary regional development project linked to the “Campus Totalförsvar” initiative in 2026. The goal is to contribute applied and needs-driven research to various dual-use actors in Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties. Duties We like to welcome an enthusiastic and adaptable PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary research group linked to research on space-related solutions to monitor and provide support for critical infrastructure like energy supply, water supply, resource allocation, logistics, production, and other elements of preparedness in relevant dual-use environments. The goal is to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure against disruptions in various crisis situations. As a PhD student you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research and studies. In addition, you may have the opportunity to contribute to teaching. As a researcher you will be involved in challenging research projects. Qualifications You must have a master’s degree or equivalent in in aerospace engineering or a related subject and previous experience in the field of small spacecraft missions (pico, nano or micro satellites) like in example design, development or operations of small satellite hardware or software.
