About the position

About the strategic area Ocean and coast

NTNU Ocean and Coast is one of five strategic research areas at NTNU. The idea behind these research areas is that complex societal challenges (such as the climate crisis) must be solved collectively. These strategic research areas are therefore established to promote

interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. The goal is to develop new solutions through radical interdisciplinarity, thereby contributing to real change and a better future.

Inspired by NTNU's strategy ‘Knowledge for a Better World’, the strategic research areas are intended to be a place where ideas meet action—a space for thinking outside the box and developing groundbreaking solutions to problems that truly matter. These research areas cover the full breadth of academic disciplines at NTNU, including artistic research, and all faculties are invited to contribute.

The Ocean and Coast strategic research area focuses on societal challenges related to the open ocean, coastal areas with their fjords and coastal communities, rivers and lakes, the water cycle, and water more generally. The Arctic faces particular challenges that will also be emphasized. Three key concepts define our approach: preserve, develop, and restore.

To address these challenges, NTNU Ocean and Coast has established eleven interdisciplinary research teams with different focus areas. We encourage you to visit our website for more information about these research teams: https://www.ntnu.edu/ocean-coast

The Department of Biological Sciences Ålesund (IBA) at Norwegian University of Science and Technology is opening a PhD position in AI-enabled biological monitoring as part of the ongoing COD-SPAWN project funded by the Ocean and Coast thematic research area of NTNU.

About the position

The NTNU University Museum is seeking a highly qualified, ambitious, and motivated PhD candidate for a project focusing on the genomics of cryptic coloration in anurans (frogs and toads).

Anurans display a diversity of colors and patterns that enable them to avoid detection by predators through background matching, masquerade (e.g., resembling leaves or bird droppings), or disruptive coloration. In many cryptically colored species, multiple color morphs co-occur within populations, and similar polymorphisms have evolved repeatedly across distantly related taxa. Proposed mechanisms for the maintenance of such polymorphisms include spatial and temporal variation in selection, heterozygote advantage, and pleiotropic effects linking coloration to other fitness-related traits.

The PhD project will generate and analyze genomic and transcriptomic datasets derived from both samples collected in the field (e.g., Ethiopia, Borneo), and tissue collections in natural history museums. Using population and comparative genomics approaches, the candidate will have opportunities to investigate the evolutionary mechanisms underlying (i) the maintenance of cryptic color polymorphisms within species, and/or (ii) the repeated evolution of similar cryptic color traits across lineages. While the project will primarily be computational and lab-based, there will be opportunities to develop complementary field experiments. The focal study system will be defined in collaboration with the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be employed at the NTNU University Museum’s Department of Natural History. The NTNU University Museum is the natural and cultural history museum of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. The Department of Natural History conducts research in systematics and taxonomy, evolutionary genomics, as well as in phylogeography, population genetics, and ecology with an emphasis on conservation biology.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

The successful candidate will join an international and interdisciplinary research environment at the Mineral Processing Laboratory at NTNU, working closely with researchers, PhD candidates, and industrial partners focused on sustainable mineral technologies for the future.

The Mining Engineering research group at NTNU provides a dynamic and collaborative working environment with access to advanced laboratory infrastructure and strong links to academia and industry. The position offers excellent opportunities for scientific development, international collaboration, conference participation, and contribution to research supporting the green and circular transition.

Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department, and the main supervisor will be Professor Pshem Kowalczuk

About the project

Flotation processes still rely heavily on conventional reagents that can be environmentally problematic, particularly in the context of water recirculation, increasing process complexity, and stricter environmental regulations. Although greener alternatives are emerging, their performance, selectivity, and robustness under realistic process conditions remain insufficiently understood.

This project focuses on developing a fundamental understanding of how green flotation reagents interact with mineral surfaces and process environments. The research will investigate adsorption mechanisms and selectivity, the influence of solution chemistry and water composition, and the stability and degradation behavior of environmentally friendly reagents under realistic flotation conditions. The project will also aim to establish relationships between molecular structure and flotation performance.

Experimental work may include flotation testing, electrokinetic measurements, and advanced surface characterization techniques. The successful candidate will work closely with other researchers and industrial stakeholders to contribute to the development of more sustainable flotation strategies for future mineral production and recycling systems.

The successful candidate will become part of the newly established MIN30 initiative at the NTNU Mineral Centre, a strategic research initiative focused on securing the future supply of critical minerals through sustainable and innovative technologies. The centre covers the entire mineral value chain, including exploration and resource characterization, mineral processing and extraction, by-product utilization, recycling, metal production, and environmental aspects associated with sustainable and responsible resource development. The MIN30 initiative will recruit several PhD candidates working on both fundamental studies and industrial applications related to future mineral and mining technologies and -methodologies. The candidate hired in this position will be integrated with other PhD candidates and researchers within the centre.

Duties of the position

The PhD candidate will investigate the fundamental behaviour of green flotation chemicals under realistic mineral processing conditions. Main research tasks include:

  • Complete doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
  • Investigation of adsorption mechanisms and selectivity of green flotation reagents on mineral surfaces
  • Study of the influence of solution chemistry, including pH, ionic composition, and water quality, on flotation performance
  • Evaluation of reagent stability, degradation behaviour, and interactions in recirculated water systems
  • Establishing links between molecular structure and flotation performance
  • Experimental flotation testing and electrokinetic characterization
  • Advanced surface characterization using techniques
  • Collaboration with other PhD candidates and industrial partners within the MIN30 initiative
  • Dissemination of research through scientific publications and presentations at international conferences.

Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
