About the position
The Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging at NTNU announces a 3‑year postdoctoral fellowship within the ProCardio Center for Innovation. This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to world‑leading research in cardiac imaging, artificial intelligence, and precision medicine in cardiology.
You will join an interdisciplinary environment of cardiologists, medical imaging experts, data scientists, engineers, and clinical researchers. The fellowship will allow you to build a strong research profile, engage with national and international collaborators, and contribute to AI‑driven tools that directly impact patient care.
The position is located at the St. Olavs hospital campus in Trondheim, and you will work closely with ProCardio partners at NTNU, Oslo University Hospital, and industry partner GE Vingmed Ultrasound.
About the project
Cardiovascular diseases are highly heterogeneous, and current clinical classifications often fail to capture the underlying complexity. Echocardiography is the primary imaging modality in cardiac care and provides rich, high‑resolution information on cardiac structure and function. However, routine workflows typically extract only a fraction of the available information, and many quantitative parameters remain underutilized or inconsistently recorded. As a result, large-scale imaging datasets contain substantial latent diagnostic and prognostic information that is currently not leveraged in clinical practice. Advances in artificial intelligence now enable automated and standardized echocardiographic measurements with high accuracy and reproducibility, including the ability to re‑analyze entire imaging archives while accounting for image quality and operator variability. These methods create new opportunities for large-scale, data‑driven phenotyping and improved characterization of disease mechanisms and progression.
The postdoctoral project focuses on development of advanced AI methods for longitudinal and multimodal analysis of echocardiographic data, integrating imaging features with clinical metadata and outcomes. We have access to a unique large-scale dataset comprising more than 150,000 patients with corresponding metadata and follow‑up information, enabling robust modeling of disease trajectories and risk profiles. By exploiting these resources, we seek to generate deeper insights into cardiac disease complexity, improve risk stratification, and enhance the clinical utility of echocardiography in everyday patient care.
The ProCardio Center for Innovation is a national research initiative hosted by Oslo University Hospital with key partners including NTNU, UiO, Simula, Sørlandet Hospital, and several industry collaborators. The center develops clinically validated AI technologies that integrate multimodal data such as echocardiography, electronic health records, genomics, longitudinal follow‑up, and outcomes, to enable tomorrow’s precision cardiology. More information can be found at the ProCardio web page.
