About the position
The PhD research project is part of the new Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, led by NTNU.
Digitalization and AI are transforming society at an unprecedented pace. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the maritime industry is not just a trend but a shift that is redefining the future. The maritime industry is now embracing AI with great enthusiasm, and the mission of the Norwegian Maritime AI Center is therefore to accelerate operationalization of AI in the maritime value chains.
The objective of this PhD project is to develop AI enabled route planning and navigational intelligence for risk based and energy efficient maritime navigation. The work will use the emerging IHO S100 maritime data standard together with historical, real-time and forecast information including shipping traffic, navigational hazards, bathymetry, and metocean conditions such as waves, currents, water levels, wind, and ice. Machine learning models will be developed to forecast future variations in such dynamic conditions and to incorporate the operational state of the vessel into routing decisions. The resulting route planning solutions will support improved navigational safety, operational resilience and reduced emissions both for conventional and autonomous vessels.
The research will be carried out together with industry and public partners in the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, with opportunities to contribute to emerging maritime capabilities such as S100 based navigational data services, energy and weather optimal voyage planning including wind assisted propulsion, enhanced situational awareness for safe navigation, and predictive management of green energy storage systems.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Børge Rokseth.

About the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre
The center shall position the maritime sector for accelerated and successful use of AI. The demand for safe and sustainable maritime activities, as well as the shortage of crew and engineers, are key drivers for change in the maritime sector. At the same time, there is a pull for growth, increased efficiency and profitability, while managing volatility in the markets. Moreover, the sector is critically important for global supply chains and security in a tense geopolitical situation. To demonstrate and prototype maritime AI solutions, the center will address a diverse and impactful set of use cases: Logistics, shipping and business transactions; Ship design and construction; Voyage planning and optimization; Condition monitoring and maintenance; Crew training; Maritime traffic and ship surveillance; Decarbonization and energy management; Autonomous ships and remote control.
The research partners are the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), University of Oslo, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Royal Norwegian Naval Academy, Norwegian Mapping Authority, MET and SINTEF Nordvest. There are about 30 user partners from the maritime sector, in addition to hundreds of members of the Maritime Forum, Blue Maritime, Ocean Autonomy, and Maritime CleanTech clusters. The center will be a hub, orchestrating the interfaces with research partners and user partners to facilitate collaboration, knowledge creation, dissemination, innovation, and sharing of knowledge. The Norwegian Maritime AI Center is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the partners for the period 2026-2030. Duties of the position

Required selection criteria
- You must have strong competence in modelling, control, optimization or artificial intelligence, including good programming skills. This background is typically obtained through studies in engineering cybernetics, robotics, control engineering, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, or similar engineering disciplines. Experience or interest in maritime risk assessment and navigation is considered an advantage.
- You must have a Master's degree in engineering, informatics, or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position and no later than September 2026.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to PhD program in Engineering Cybernetics .

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD program in Engineering Cybernetics within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral program throughout the period of employment.

About the position
We have an open PhD position for research related to this topic: AI-Driven Business Models, Financial Performance, and Value Creation in the Maritime Industry, connected to the Norwegian Maritime AI Center and Fjordlab.
The maritime sector is entering a phase where AI adoption increasingly affects financial decision-making, cost structures, investment strategies, and long-term value creation. AI influences how companies allocate capital and resources, price services, manage risk, optimize asset portfolios, and develop new revenue models. Yet the financial impacts of AI remain poorly understood, and companies face substantial uncertainty when evaluating AI-related investments in improving their value chains.
NTNU now have an open position for a PhD project investigating how AI-driven improvements in information flows reshape financial flows, and how maritime firms can convert improved operations into financial value. Examples include capital efficiency gains from better asset utilisation, OPEX reductions through smart operations, logistics and predictive maintenance, cost-avoidance from improved reliability, dynamic pricing enabled by real-time data, and new revenue mechanisms such as performance-based contracts and servitization.
The project is suitable for candidates with strong interests in finance, economics, business model innovation, supply chain management, and quantitative or data-driven analysis, and who wish to contribute to improving financial decision-making and strategic investment choices in an increasingly digital maritime industry. The PhD candidate will analyse company data, financial statements, investment decisions, risk models, and commercial strategies across the maritime sector, identifying conditions under which AI contributes to measurable value creation.
The position will be associated with The Norwegian Maritime AI Center and Fjordlab at NTNU. This affiliation will position the candidate in a network with other researchers at PhD and senior level. About the project
AI LEARN is a new Centre dedicated to the empowerment of human learning through responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence. In a world where AI systems are reshaping how we learn, work and participate in democracy, our centre tackles the promise and peril of hybrid intelligence—human and machine working and learning together. AI LEARN’s mission is to establish an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub that advances foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance and broad capacity building.
This postdoctoral fellowship is associated with the second and third clusters of the center which focus on Technological Advancement and Hybrid Intelligence. The goal is to investigate how to evolve advanced, human-centered AI technology to empower human learning, including designing, developing and evaluating systems and models to enhance learning through AI technology.
The Postdoc fellow will engage with developing AI-agents, models, frameworks and technologies for personalized and adaptive learning experiences, and for facilitating multi-agent communication to enhance human learning. We will utilize high quality datasets provided by our industry partners for model fine-tuning and alignment. Moreover, they will employ extensive experiments in collaborating partners (schools, public and private sectors) and engage with the analysis of the collected data. As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

About the position
The PhD research project is part of the new Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, led by NTNU.
Digitalization and AI are transforming society at an unprecedented pace. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the maritime industry is not just a trend but a shift that is redefining the future. The maritime industry is now embracing AI with great enthusiasm, and the mission of the Norwegian Maritime AI Center is therefore to accelerate operationalization of AI in the maritime value chains.
The objective of this PhD project is to develop learning-based methods for maritime tracking and prediction in time- and safety-critical applications. Artificial intelligence techniques will be utilized in order to improve detection capabilities, target recognition and shape estimation, data association, as well as intention prediction, beyond the state of the art. In order to support machine learning, the project will make use of historical radar recordings from several vessels as training data. The project will also study how state-of-the-art radar tracking can be used to record additional training data in an efficient and automatic manner, and how simulations can support data augmentation. Key deliverables of this project will be a multi-target radar tracker that learns to utilize radar targets’ amplitude signatures for data association and state estimation, and learning-based prediction models that anticipate the future motion of vessels seen in the radar data, based on the radar data, local geography and historical patterns. The methods are to implemented and verified in real-time using dedicated hardware such as graphical processing units. The PhD candidate will interact with other PhD candidates, researchers, companies and governmental agencies in the center. Together you will pursue different applications and explore different AI methodologies.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Edmund Førland Brekke.

About the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre
The center shall position the maritime sector for accelerated and successful use of AI. The demand for safe and sustainable maritime activities, as well as the shortage of crew and engineers, are key drivers for change in the maritime sector. At the same time, there is a pull for growth, increased efficiency and profitability, while managing volatility in the markets. Moreover, the sector is critically important for global supply chains and security in a tense geopolitical situation. To demonstrate and prototype maritime AI solutions, the center will address a diverse and impactful set of use cases: Logistics, shipping and business transactions; Ship design and construction; Voyage planning and optimization; Condition monitoring and maintenance; Crew training; Maritime traffic and ship surveillance; Decarbonization and energy management; Autonomous ships and remote control.
The research partners are the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), University of Oslo, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Royal Norwegian Naval Academy, Norwegian Mapping Authority, MET and SINTEF Nordvest. There are about 30 user partners from the maritime sector, in addition to hundreds of members of the Maritime Forum, Blue Maritime, Ocean Autonomy, and Maritime CleanTech clusters. The center will be a hub, orchestrating the interfaces with research partners and user partners to facilitate collaboration, knowledge creation, dissemination, innovation, and sharing of knowledge. The Norwegian Maritime AI Center is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the partners for the period 2026-2030. Duties of the position

- You must have an academically relevant background such as for example engineering cybernetics, control engineering, machine learning, statistics, informatics, mechanical engineering, or maritime technology.

Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position and no later than September 2026.
- You must have strong academic results from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

AI LEARN is a new Centre dedicated to the empowerment of human learning through responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence. In a world where AI systems are reshaping how we learn, work and participate in democracy, our centre tackles the promise and peril of hybrid intelligence—human and machine working and learning together. AI LEARN’s mission is to establish an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub that advances foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance and broad capacity building.
This fellowship is associated with the third cluster of the centre, that focuses on Technological Advancement. The goal is to investigate how to evolve advanced, human-centered AI technology to empower human learning, including designing, developing and evaluating systems and models to enhance learning through AI technology. A part of this work is also to consider opportunities for innovation related to start-up companies.
The approach followed encapsulates Design-Based Research and Responsible Research and Innovation principles. The PhD fellow will engage with designing and evaluating user-centred AI artifacts that support creativity, problem solving and knowledge co-creation. Moreover, they will employ extensive case studies in collaborating partners (schools, public and private sectors) and engage with the analysis of the collected data. This main goal of this particular PhD fellowship is to develop innovative applications, tools and models for AI game-based learning. Further, in collaboration with a postdoc, the candidate should establish models, frameworks, and technologies to create interactive, personalized and game-based learning experiences, and evaluate these.

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years, with potential extension to a 4th year in case the candidate engages with duty work (career promotion work. A minimum of three work years of the total term period must be dedicated to doctoral work.)
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.
The position is conditional on external funding.

PhD position for the topic ‘Bridging Adaptive Planning and Human-Centred Design Strategies to Address Climate Change Adaptation for Vulnerable Neighbourhoods and Groups’
Climate Change Adaptation for vulnerable urban neighbourhoods and communities is one of the most urgent issues researchers, governments and policymakers have highlighted in recent decades. While climate change adaptation has begun to recognise the heterogeneity and existing vulnerabilities in the built environment and society, frameworks and tools for harnessing community agency and including the interests of the most vulnerable are still generic. Recent studies recommend addressing climate change adaptation through multi-scalar adaptive planning combined with human-centred design approaches. Methodologically, adaptive planning relies on top-down, expert-driven decision-making, with an unclear role and agency for local communities. In contrast, human-centred design approaches rely heavily on community-oriented problem formulation and needs-based design, yet these are often not anchored well amongst actors involved in spatial planning. Limited studies systematically combine methods and insights from these diverse approaches, and an evidence-based spatial and visual methodology for decision-making at various scales is therefore lacking. This methodological gap is evident in climate change adaptation studies in the Global North and South. This PhD project, therefore, will formulate a context-specific and integrated methodology for addressing climate change adaptation and human-centred design in vulnerable neighbourhoods by combining qualitative and GIS-based mapping, community-oriented visual design engagement methods, and stakeholder analysis at multiple scales and in diverse contexts. This proposal addresses the lack of comparative, empirically grounded studies in flood-prone, low-income neighbourhoods. It will examine adaptive planning combined with a human-centred approach across the Global North and South, giving the research a wider relevance and impact.
This PhD project builds on two principal theoretical domains: adaptive planning and human-centred design in the context for preparedness for climate change. Insights from diverse global North and South contexts will strengthen the interrelations between the above-mentioned theoretical frameworks and enable building on valuable scholarship from both contexts.
Duties of the position

- Participate proactively in the following research, network and education groups as part of the 1-year career-enhancing work: Adaptation thematic group (funded by NTNU strategic area Civil Security), and Gemini Centre 'Equitable Partnerships for Global Impact'.
- Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions
- Teaching and supervision of master students in the program in Urban Planning at Department of Architecture and Planning and the Humanitarian Design Course in The Department of Design

Required selection criteria
- You must have a relevant master’s degree in urban planning, Industrial design or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position, and no later than 31st December 2025.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme in Architecture.
- Experience with fieldwork/professional (including internships)/educational experience in the African/Asian context
- Good oral and written presentation skills in English.
