The research assistant will assist in research projects that study healthcare provision and the role of digitization. This is an exciting opportunity to shape new directions for the projects, work with novel microdata, and refine the skills needed for empirical research. We are seeking a candidate with an Economics degree (BA/BSc or MA/MSc) and a strong capacity for independent work within a supervised research environment. “Predoctoral” refers to a candidate who has not yet started a PhD program but may wish to apply for one later. The position is ideal for those who want to apply for a PhD. Key responsibilities The primary task of the research assistant will be to assist in conducting applied economic research. At the European Spallation Source (ESS), we design and operate unique experimental equipment used by scientists from around the world. We are now looking for a hands on mechanical technician to join our Sample Environment Group as ESS moves towards operations. You don’t need prior experience with scientific or sample environment equipment. What matters most is your practical mechanical skills, your interest in learning new technologies, and that you are motivated to work with complex, custom built systems. About the role: As a technician in the Sample Environment Group, you will support the development, testing, installation, operation and maintenance of custom scientific equipment used in experiments with neutrons. Your work will be interesting and varied, covering everything from equipment assembly and prototyping to installation and operational support on scientific instruments. You will gain experience in working with equipment involving extreme temperatures, pressure, vacuum, fluids, lasers and automated systems. On-the-job training and support by experienced colleagues specialising in these technologies will be provided. What you will do: • Assemble, align, calibrate, maintain and repair custom-built equipment. • Modify and prototype sample holders and other bespoke components. • Carry out manual machining using lathes, milling machines and similar tools. • Support installation and testing activities together with engineers and scientists. • Maintain workshop tools, consumables and a safe working environment. • Work with other ESS teams such as safety engineers, rigging and facility services This role includes out of hours on call support during ESS operational periods, expected to begin in 2027. About you: This role could be a good fit if you are: • A mechanical or workshop technician with strong hands on skills. • A junior engineer who enjoys practical, hands on work. • A technician from an R&D, laboratory, test or industrial environment. • An experienced sample environment technician from a similar facility. You need to have: • Experience in mechanical assembly, maintenance or repair of equipment. • Confidence using manual workshop machines (lathes, milling machines). • The ability to read and work from technical drawings. • A strong focus on safety in all aspects of your work. • Working proficiency in English. You’re eager to learn, adapt quickly, and are interested in contributing across a variety of tasks. A genuine interest in repairing, improving, or building mechanical systems is vital. The RAI team is conducting fundamental research in all the aspects of robotics with a specific focus on aerial, space and bioinspired robotics. Subject description Robotics and artificial intelligence aim to develop novel robotic systems that are characterised by advanced autonomy for improving the ability of robots to interact with the surrounding environment and humans during the execution of specific tasks. Project description The vision of RAI is aiming in closing the gap from theory to real life, while the team has a strong expertise in field robotics. Specific application areas of focus are robotics for mines, aerial inspection of aging infrastructure, multi-robotic search and rescue, multi sensorial fusion and multirobot coordination, including multirobot perception, decentralization and mission execution. The RAI team has a strong European and National participation in multiple R&D&I projects. Duties As a PhD student you will perform research with substantial theoretical and experimental components that should be published in peer-reviewed major international journals and at major conferences. The position will include supervision of MSc and to assist in grant applications from research funding agencies/councils, the EU framework program or the industry. The position might also involve teaching assistance, seminars and presentations.You will be working in the field of robotic autonomy and all activities will be linked with National, European and worldwide R&D Projects. The research topic is in the area of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. More specifically, the position will involve dense research activities in the area of designing, experimenting and theoretical development, with the following research areas providing a template for relevant directions: - Embodied Intelligence for Soft Robotic Systems - Foundational Models for Adaptive Soft Robots - Real-Time Adaptive and Stiffness-Aware Control - Resilient autonomy for Self-Healing Soft Robotic Platforms - Uncertainty-Aware and Predictive Human-Robot Interaction Qualifications To be qualified for the position, you must have a MSc degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science or related subject.
