Launch of the European Learning Model Data Model Browser

Last week the European Commission launched the European Learning Model (ELM) Data Model Browser. This tool allows you to easily navigate and explore the different elements of the ELM and the connections between its over 480 properties. The data model allows for the description of all data related to learning, including formal, non-formal and informal learning.

What is the ELM?

The ELM, is the first multilingual data model for learning. The long-term support version of ELM was launched in May 2023. Built on open standards (W3C Verifiable Credential data model), it provides the first unified and comprehensive data model across the European Education Area.

The ELM can facilitate the recognition of qualifications and validation of skills, promoting a culture of upskilling, reskilling, and lifelong learning. It caters for the needs of general education, Vocational Education and Training (VET), higher education, adult learning, and labour market trainings.

You can find more detailed information about the ELM on the introduction to the ELM page.

Uses of the Data Model Browser

The Data Model Browser allows you to visualise the properties of the ELM. You will be able to view the full ontology and examine the different application profiles of the ELM in RDF and XSD formats. The Data Model Browser aims to support the understanding and adoption of the ELM.

You can also find further information on the uses of the ELM through an overview of the relevant application profiles: Learning Opportunities and Qualifications (LOQ), Accreditations (AMS), European Digital Credentials for Learning (EDC) and Person Identity (PID).

The Data Model Browser is currently available in English, but the multilingual version will be published this autumn, allowing you to browse the ELM in all 29 Europass languages.
