The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.
Do you want to know more about LIST? Check our website: https://www.list.lu/
How will you contribute?
You will be part of the LIST Materials Research and Technology department, where you will carry out your work in the Quantum Materials Group, led by Dr. Florian Kaiser.
Quantum technologies have the potential to revolutionise the world in many aspects. Quantum colour centres in in wide bandgap semiconductors have recently emerged as a promising platform, since they can incorporate quantum systems, which can be scaled up by industrial processing. Along these lines, we have recently shown that individual colour centres can be integrated into silicon carbide nanophotonic waveguides with little-to-no degradation of spin-optical coherences. These finding define the strategy for developing a scalable quantum technology architecture.
Our strategy is to use multiplexed and integrated colour centres for quantum communication tasks. Key here is to generate entanglement between colour centres based on spin-photon entanglement, as well as Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. With this milestone demonstration, we strive to kickstart subsequent developments towards a quantum internet architecture.
The objective of this PhD thesis is to support our work towards optical interference between colour centres, i.e., Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. The initial part of this thesis comprises setting up our new optical cryostat platform, which is based on a combination of standard confocal microscopy, and interferometry. In the second step, you will benefit from our ongoing activities towards quantum photonic silicon carbide chips in which we generate colour centres in fibre-coupled waveguides.
You will determine the ideal pulsed excitation schemes for colour centres, considering spectral, temporal and polarization filtering. Subsequently, you will characterise the photon quality depending on experimental parameters, and implement initial two-photon inteference experiments outside of the cryostat, followed by a fully-on-chip demonstration inside the cryostat. If time permits, this project can be further extended to the generation of entanglement between two colour centre chips located in two different cryostats.

POSTDOC ON VEGETATION OPTIMALITY MODELLING IN THE PRESENCE OF ... (m/f)
Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology - LIST
Luxembourg, ESCH-SUR-ALZETTE
Temporary contract | 24 months | Belvaux
Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a leading Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) that drives innovation for the economy and society in Luxembourg and beyond. With cutting-edge expertise in Natural, Built, Industrial environments, Space, AI, Security and defence technologies. LIST bridges scientific excellence and applied research to design solutions that address real-world challenges and create positive impact.
The quality of weather forecasts, seasonal simulations, and climate projections depends critically on the adequate representation of land-atmosphere (L-A) feedbacks. These feedbacks are the result of a highly complex network of processes and variables related to the exchange of momentum, energy, and mass. Significant challenges persist in understanding processes and feedbacks.
The Land-Atmosphere Feedback Initiative (LAFI, https://lafi-dfg.de) is an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers in Germany and Luxembourg, from atmospheric, agricultural, and soil sciences, bio-geo-physics, hydrology, and neuroinformatics, proposing a novel combination of advanced research methods. The overarching goal of LAFI is to understand and quantify L-A feedbacks via unique synergistic observations and model simulations from the micro-gamma (» 2 m) to the meso-gamma (» 2 km) scales across diurnal to seasonal time scales.
The overall theme of the advertised position is: "Effect of land-atmosphere coupling on vegetation behaviour". The position will build on ongoing experimental and field monitoring work performed by a PhD student at LIST and other researchers in LAFI, and extend the existing Vegetation Optimality Model (VOM, https://vom.readthedocs.io) to test the following hypotheses:
1. Vertical mixing of air increases leaf and canopy water use efficiency;
2. Vertical mixing of air reduces plant heat stress (especially during dry periods), i.e., leaf temperatures are lower during periods with enhanced vertical mixing;
3. Optimality-based vegetation dynamics and stomatal control improves simulation of transpiration, soil water dynamics and CO2 assimilation compared to conventional parameterization of vegetation and stomatal dynamics.
Do you want to know more about LIST? Check our website: https://www.list.lu/
How will you contribute?
You will extend the VOM to simulate wheat and maize crops and consider the effect of L-A coupling strength on the feedbacks between canopy gas and energy exchange and the micrometeorological conditions in the canopy air space.
Crops will be simulated by prescribing known physiological limits of a given crop while allowing plastic plant properties to self-optimise for achieving a maximum net carbon profit.
L-A coupling will be simulated by introducing an explicit air volume representing the canopy air space and replicating the observed coupling between water and CO2 fluxes and concentrations within and above the canopy.
Simulations will be used to assess in how far vertical mixing is beneficial or detrimental for productivity under different environmental conditions (soil moisture, atmosphere) and how it might affect optimal stomatal control at the diurnal time scale. VOM simulations will be compared to simulations by the other models employed in LAFI to assess the potentially added value of optimality principles in improving the simulations of transpiration and ET, and to suggest improvements to the representation of root water uptake and stomatal control in the different models.

The gut resistome, i.e. all antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) circulating in the gut, determine the microbiome dynamic, i.e. how an individual's gut microbiome will respond to and recover from an antibiotic therapy. Moreover, the gut resistome is also a source of ARGs conferring antimicrobial resistance to virulent or clinically relevant strains. The horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between bacteria can occur in any environment and particularly when bacterial loads are high, like in the gut. Notably, the gut microbiomes of diseased individuals are enriched in facultative pathogens which encode ARGs and might have an increased infective competence. A risk assessment of ARG excretion caused by gut dysbiosis will be established by combining data obtained about the frequency of ARG transfer events by transduction in case of gut dysbiosis and the survival of AMR bacteria in surface water as well as their competencies to transfer ARGs into the environment.
By combining multi-faceted training activities leading to specialized as well as transferrable skills, the MICRO-PATH DTU candidates will achieve scientific and professional excellence by the end of their studies. Key elements of the holistic training program foreseen in MICRO-PATH are:
• Conducting research in the framework of a doctoral research project under the guidance of the PhD Supervisor
• Access to scientific and transferable skills courses such as project management, scientific writing, career development, presentation skills or good scientific practices
• Active participation (poster, talks) in scientific conferences
• Dedicated outreach activities
