Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in Social Anthropology. The position is fully funded by the European Research Council (ERC) through the project GENMAR (2026–2031). The successful candidate’s postdoctoral project must therefore make a clear and substantial contribution to the themes and objectives of GENMAR.

Prospective candidates must present a project proposal ethnographically situated in either Brazil, Tanzania or Thailand. Further instructions about the project proposal are outlined below.

About the project/work tasks:

The GENMAR-project will advance empirical and theoretical knowledge about why and how women are continuously marginalized in the fishery sector.

Current research shows that fisherwomen’s roles and contributions are not only habitually underrecognized, but they are also often excluded from governance- and management processes and lack social and economic rights. However, we know little about how gender equality policies- and recommendations in fishery are negotiated through political- and advocacy systems. Further, in the face of increased attention to the issue, little is known of where and why it loses momentum in political systems. Moreover, women’s role and agency in fishery politics, advocacy and governance is an understudied field, offering limited knowledge of how and why their struggles are hindered.

GENMAR’s research objective is situated at the intersection of these three knowledge gaps. The project will develop a multi-sited, multi-scalar, comparative and theorized ethnography of gender inequality, gender advocacy and gender policies in fisheries in Spain, Brazil, Tanzania and Thailand, and a case study of fishery policy in the EU-commission and the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Theoretically, the project draws on the existing literature about the gendering of fisheries, in dialogue with gender studies, social science concept analysis, legal anthropology and anthropological approaches to the state, organizations, law and policy. Methodologically, the project draws on ethnographic fieldwork, extended interviews, focus groups, document- and media studies and law- and policy analysis.

The project’s PI is Associate Professor Iselin Åsedotter Strønen. For more information about the project, see In/visible women of the sea. Gendering fishery politics and advocacy (GENMAR) | UiB

Responsibilities

Required qualifications

  • The applicant must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within social or cultural anthropology (dissertation must be approved by the deadline)
  • A documented research trajectory reflecting the thematic and/or theoretical focus of GENMAR. Documented research experience with the gendering of fisheries is an advantage but is not an absolute requirement.

  • Prior experience in large research projects and/or prior experience from working in academia in educational/institutional/organizational roles

Doctoral student in the topic of glass dynamics at ab-initio
Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB
Sweden
We are looking for a Doctoral student to become part of our team at the Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics at the Department Physics. About us The Department of Physics' core activities take place within the framework of six divisions. Our research profiles include basic research, biological physics, materials for energy applications, disordered systems, complex oxides, surface and nanophysics, and subatomic and plasma physics. We provide a competitive advantage by linking top-level international and interdisciplinary academic performance in the areas of materials science, nanotechnology, life science and energy research with world-leading industrial research and development projects. The division of Condensed Matter and Materials Theory constructs models for and develops an understanding of a large variety of materials and other condensed matter systems, sometimes leading to new materials, novel technological devices, or structured media with properties beyond those occurring naturally. To this end, we combine theoretical, methodological and computational techniques, often in close collaboration with local and international experimental groups. About the research project  Organic glasses offer tunable optical properties, flexibility, and low weight — making them vital in optoelectronics and pharmaceuticals. Yet accurately simulating their dynamics, particularly the molecular slowdown at the glass transition, remains a major computational challenge. This Doctoral student project addresses this by combining generative AI models and machine-learned interatomic potentials to simulate glass-forming systems at near-quantum-mechanical accuracy and experimentally relevant time scales. You will develop AI-driven frameworks applied progressively to inorganic glasses, simpler molecular systems, and perylene derivatives — yielding new insights into multi-component glass formation and tools for the design of advanced amorphous materials. It also has a strong focus on sustainable use of food raw materials and on many different quality aspects of food. About the research project Diet plays an important role in human health. Effects are partly mediated by the thousands of small molecules present in foods, which are to some degree absorbed and/or metabolized by gut microbiota. Characterizing food- and microbiota-derived molecules and determining their levels in biological samples from humans is essential to study their health effects. Short-chain fatty acids represent small molecules derived from gut fermentation of dietary fiber and proteins, which have physiological effects or relevance to health. They represent an analytical challenge since they are present in small concentrations in systemic circulation and because of their volatility, which can easily cause contamination. We have developed a quantitative LC-MS/MS method for their analysis in different matrices. The method is further developed by including other fermentation-derived metabolites and is used for analysis of thousands of samples in different research projects in our laboratory. Job description In this position, you will be responsible for the method described above, develop it further, and analyze samples in close collaboration with our doctoral students, postdocs, and external collaborators. Your tasks will include the following: Being responsible for the maintenance and development of a quantitative method for the analysis of SCFA in different sample matrices (plasma, faeces, saliva, breast milk etc.) Being responsible to conduct analyses with the method in collaboration with students, doctoral students and postdocs Drive quality assurance work and documentation and presenting data, results and method development internally and externally, both in written and oral presentations Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory for the role: MSc in bioanalytical analytical chemistry, bioscience or chemical engineering Documented experience from modern LC-MS method development and analysis The following experience will strengthen your application: Experience from food or life-science mass spectrometric applications will be meritorious Experience from systematic quality assurance work is meritorious Contract terms The position is a temporary full-time employment for a maximum of 360 days.
