The Faculty The Faculty of Technology and Society (TS) offers educations and research in computer science and media technology as well as engineering, natural sciences and applied mathematics. The Department The Department of Materials Science and Applied Mathematics unite interdisciplinary education and research in mainly three areas: engineering, natural science and mathematics. Three engineering programmes at bachelor level are offered: Building Engineering, Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Product Development and Design. In addition, the Science and Technology Foundation Year programme is offered. A programme on master level, Computational Materials Science, will be offered from autumn 2019. The Department of Materials Science and Applied Mathematics offers an active and international environment. About the position

Nord University, campus Bodø, offers a four-year PhD position at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture. The contract will be for a 4-year period with 25% career-promoting activities. 

The selected candidate is expected to start no later than January 31 2027. 

Pigs provide a translational bridge between animal experiments and human clinical care, particularly for cardiovascular, critical care, surgical, and device-oriented research, owing to their anatomical and organ-size similarities and comparable physiology and pathophysiology. This project will provide insight into novel approaches for continuous monitoring and treatment of severe injuries and critical cardiovascular conditions.

We are seeking highly motivated, creative, and ambitious applicants who are willing to collaborate with other members of a multidisciplinary team. This PhD position will be linked to ongoing, externally funded projects carried out by the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences. It will be associated with the Production and Welfare divisions of the faculty, located at the Bodø campus. The PhD candidate will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for large animal studies. – making fluency in a Scandinavian language a necessity for this project.

Qualification requirements

The candidate should hold a valid veterinary authorisation issued by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. In addition, extensive clinical experience in treating animals is required. Experience with the use of pigs as a model animal for medical research is required, as well as specific knowledge of pig anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, anesthesia, surgical procedures and diagnostic imaging. For non-native speakers, proficiency in spoken and written Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language, is essential. The position also requires proficiency in English, both written and verbal

  • A degree in veterinary medicine is required. Grade average of B or better (or equivalent score) both for the programme in total and the master’s thesis. See admission requirements: PhD in Biosciences
  • Valid veterinary authorization from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority is required. Applicants from outside the EU/EEA must submit proof of their degree and their authorisation. 
  • Certificate of training in laboratory/research animals is required.
  • A good knowledge and practical experience in the treatment of domestic terrestrial animals is required. Experience with research animals will be considered an advantage.
  • It is assumed that the person who is hired is admitted to the faculty’s doctoral program. The final project outline, including a plan for the doctoral work, must be approved and agreed upon within three months after admission. Termination may be considered if admission to the doctoral program is not available within this deadline, due to a lack of annual reporting of progress and/or serious failure in progress and in duty work.   • For the position, good English skills are required, both written and oral. For non-native speakers, proficiency in oral and written English is essential, documented by either the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification or internationally recognised certificates. 
  • Ability to speak fluently in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (level B2) is necessary for the teaching tasks. 

Candidates who already have a PhD degree will not be considered for the position.
