PhD Research Fellow in Systems Engineering
UNIVERSITETET I SØRØST-NORGE CAMPUS KONGSBERG
Norway, KONGSBERG

Do you want to contribute to the development of knowledge, insight and solutions that are relevant to society and working life today and in the future?

We are looking for a PhD research fellow within Systems Engineering.

About the position

Are you interested in Systems Engineering, and want to engage in research with skilled colleagues who share your interests? Maybe you can become our new colleague at Department of Science and Industry Systems at the Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences. The position is available from August 1, 2026.

This is an educational position that is primarily intended to give promising researchers the opportunity to develop academically and professionally through organised research training.

It is a condition that the person who accepts the position applies for and is granted admission to the faculty’s doctoral programme in Systems Engineering within three months of starting in the position.

The doctoral programme includes relevant courses corresponding to approximately six months of study (30 ETCS), a thesis based on independent research, active participation in national and international research environments, relevant research dissemination, a trial lecture and public defence of the thesis. Read more about organised research training at USN on our website.

The research fellowship is for a fixed term of three years with pure organised research training.

Your personnel manager will be Head of Department Aida Omerovic. The place of work will be at campus Kongsberg.

The person appointed will be a part of a dynamic research environment within the research-based innovation Centre for Effective Engineering and Learning in Complex Systems, SFI CELECT. Its vision is to do more with less- and faster. Norway’s leading industrial companies are part of centre. This constitutes a research context for the 30 PhD candidates that will be collaborating across USN, NTNU, and the University of Agder. The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the Industrial Research School in Complex Systems (INRESCOS).

The position is funded through SFI CELECT supported by the Research Council of Norway.

About the doctoral project

This PhD aims to explore the collaboration between human intelligence and AI within Systems Architecting.

Systems architects ensure effective system behavior, interfaces, as well as competitiveness, particularly in early development stages. Organizations are implementing digital tools to help with these tasks, but significant barriers persist in practice that hinder effective deployment of broader digital engineering environments, and specifically effective adaption of AI. There are several trade-offs applying AI to assist in design & architecting, as humans require context awareness while AI depends on accurate and reliable information.

The main focus is integrating human expertise with digital assistants for systems architects working on complex systems (i.e. autonomous drones, maritime surveillance, operational logistics).

The candidate will explore how the systems architects will work effectively in the future, communicating to both humans and machines (including AI agents), and build methodologies shaping the future of systems engineering.

Typical research questions could be: How can tacit systems-architectural knowledge be captured and shared between humans and with machines? How to effectively collaborate on an architectural level with AI assistants?

The candidate will be working with complex technology development initiatives, directly with the CELECT partners (including industry and governmental organisations within maritime, aerospace, manufacturing, and defence) and needs to be responsible for reporting progress and delivering outputs to the CELECT centre.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to drive innovation in systems architecture and human-AI collaboration within the context of Norwegian Industry.

About the position

Are you interested in pursuing a doctorate and developing a career in research and higher education? As a PhD candidate with us, you will work toward your doctoral degree while gaining valuable research experience and transferable skills that open opportunities both within and beyond academia.

About the project

Buildings represent about 40% of energy use in Europe. They can contribute to the flexibility of energy systems by shifting their energy use over time, for example, by providing services to electricity or district heating networks through so-called demand response (DR). One key objective is to reduce energy consumption during peak periods in the energy system while maintaining acceptable comfort conditions for occupants. In cold climates, space heating represents a dominant energy load. Advanced control strategies can adjust this load by temporarily modifying indoor temperature setpoints over time. Although automated demand response (ADR) has been widely investigated in simulation studies (“virtual experiments”), there are still relatively few examples where customized ADR solutions have been implemented and tested in real buildings over extended periods. Important challenges remain before such solutions can be deployed at scale. For example, measurement data in buildings may be limited or poorly structured and lack proper contextualization or standardization. In addition, buildings are not always constructed or operated exactly as originally designed. Real-world conditions may also involve more complex physical phenomena than those represented in simulations, such as heating system dynamics or occupant behavior. Finally, existing legacy building automation systems may not be well-suited to support advanced control strategies.

This PhD is part of the EDISON project led by SINTEF Community and with key industry partners. It aims to develop a scalable ADR framework (or technical pathway) that can address these practical limitations and demonstrate it in a real building. The final objective is to provide a well-documented workflow for scalable ADR implementation, supported by experimental validation in a real-world case study. Unlike most research limited to simulations, this PhD will deploy and validate control strategies in real buildings over long periods.

The supervision team is Prof. Laurent Georges (main supervisor) and John Clauss, PhD, researcher at SINTEF Community (co-supervisor).

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

  • Complete the PhD training consisting of courses (minimum 30 ECTS credits).
  • Carry out research of excellent quality within the framework described above.
  • Define and develop a scalable ADR setup suited for typical hydronic heating and ventilation systems in non-residential buildings.

About the position

The Department of Information Security and Communication Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position on AI-driven network operations for cloud-native 5G/6G networks. The project will explore the mechanisms, control loops, and open interfaces needed to use Generative AI (GenAI) and Agentic AI safely and efficiently to operate modern softwarized network infrastructures.

Telecom networks are rapidly moving to cloud-native network functions (CNFs) and microservices deployed across core, regional cloud, and edge. This enables fast innovation, but it also makes operations harder as services have many dependencies, failures and performance degradations can cascade across domains and slices, and platforms are often multi-vendor with different APIs and data formats. At the same time, GenAI and Agentic AI can help engineers understand alarms and logs, propose recovery steps, and even execute actions—yet in carrier-grade networks every action must be correct, controllable, auditable, and SLA-compliant.

The PhD work is grounded in the systems reality of deploying AI agents against real network platforms, where decisions about whether to execute at the edge or in the cloud carry direct consequences for latency, bandwidth, and privacy. Any action an agent proposes must be validated and verified before it is applied, e.g., through policy gates, invariants, staged rollouts, and rollback mechanisms so that automation remains within sanctioned boundaries. Underpinning both is the need for dependability models that, combined with telemetry-driven learning, can guide self-healing decisions in a way that reduces downtime without inducing oscillation or cascading secondary failures.

The research focus is hands-on and systems-oriented: the candidate will build a closed-loop, verifiable self-healing prototype for cloud-native 5G/6G operations, evaluate it under realistic degradations (failures/underperformance), and produce results that matter for both academia and industry—fewer SLA violations, faster recovery, and safer automation.

About the position

A new PhD fellowship in path signatures, stochastic analysis, and learning from sequential data is available at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. The project will be supervised by Prof. Kurusch Ebrahimi‑Fard and is connected to the research activities of the national project SURE‑AI.

The PhD project focuses on developing mathematical and computational methods based on path signatures and related algebraic and analytic structures for the analysis and modelling of complex sequential data. Path signatures, originating in stochastic integration and rough path theory, provide expressive representations of time‑dependent data through sequences of iterated integrals and have recently gained significant attention in machine learning and data science. The project will investigate how these representations can be combined with concepts from physics‑inspired machine learning, drawing on statistical physics, dynamical systems, and stochastic processes, to design robust, interpretable, and mathematically principled learning methods. Particular emphasis will be placed on learning from noisy, high‑dimensional, and irregular data. Possible research directions include exploring connections between signature‑based feature maps and emerging quantum‑inspired or hybrid computational approaches to machine learning. Potential applications span time‑series analysis, dynamical system modelling, and the data‑driven study of stochastic phenomena.

The successful candidate will be offered a three‑year PhD position at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, NTNU, with the main workplace in Trondheim, Norway. About the position

The Department of Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is offering an exciting PhD position within the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, a national centre with a focus on applied artificial intelligence (AI) in the maritime sector.

The maritime industry is adopting AI technologies. The next decade will bring extensive digitization of operational data in yards, creating opportunities for more data-driven planning. AI can replace or supplement traditional planning approaches, which struggles to manage the uncertainty and variability that are inherent in complex engineer-to-order shipbuilding. Realizing the full potential of AI is both a technical and an integrative challenge. It requires combining what AI excels at, such as pattern recognition and processing data streams, with theories and methods for planning and logistics.

The PhD research will focus on AI-enhanced planning of operations in shipbuilding supply chains, examining how AI techniques can support decision-makers in analyzing real-time and historical data to better coordinate operators, equipment, and facilities, as well as manage operations across multiple projects and supply chain partners. A key part of this research is to investigate how AI can be integrated into planning methods and systems in supply chains, particularly how AI can anticipate disruptions, analyse trade-offs in tactical sourcing decisions, and contribute to improved supply chain performance.

You will join the Production Management Research Group at NTNU, which focuses on the design and planning of production and logistics systems. The research will be carried out together with industry and public partners in the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre. As part of a world-leading research community, you will investigate how AI can reshape planning and logistics in complex shipbuilding supply chains.
