Our organisation:
Within the tuberculosis domain, we provide free care to tuberculosis patients in Flanders and Brussels. Our target populations are vulnerable groups such as prisoners, refugees and homeless people. Outreach to these groups is essential as mainstream care does not reach them sufficiently. Care is provided according to the principle of quality healthcare for all.
Today we are looking for a project officer for our team to support us in connecting to the specific target group of the Habesha community (Eritrea, Ethiopia).
Your workplace:
Your base location will be the Centre for Respiratory Healthcare (CRG) in Antwerp, but you will mainly work in and around those places highly frequented by your target group. You will often travel to Brussels and occasionally to different cities and towns throughout Flanders.
Your tasks and challenges:
- Build strong connections with people from Eritrea en Ethiopia;
- Build trust between the community and our respiratory health centres. You will become a key person between our nurses and those responsible, role models and members of the community, so that we get to know each other better and trust in our work grows;
- Make tuberculosis more discussable in the community;
- Motivate people with your background to persevere with the difficult treatment, by explaining it in their own language and customs, and providing psychological, social and care support. You will motivate them to participate in research into the spread of infection and in preventive treatment. You will also help to optimise participation in screening sessions. This may be done using a mobile screening unit on location.
- Establish contacts with specific initiatives by or for this target group, strengthen these and expand them to new points of contact.
- Build a close relationship with the community and regularly give accessible information sessions about tuberculosis, its treatment and our free services;
- Organise screening days in the communities, together with our nurses, and guide people through the screening process;
- Help people on their way to and during contact tracing and therapy;
- Help collect data to properly evaluate this project;
- Maintain and strengthen the network of humanitarian organisations (in Brussels and elsewhere) to provide free TB care to vulnerable people.
Your profile and talents:
- We are not looking for your degree, but for your network and good connections within the community. A paramadical background will not be necessary;
- You speak and understand Dutch or English fluently as ofcourse several languages withing the target group (Tigrinya, Amhaar,…);
- You function independently but also enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team;
- You are a quick networker and you communicate with great empathy and listening skills;
- You are a good planner/organiser and flexible in this respect;
- You know the neighbourhoods where your target groups are located like the back of your hand, or you are prepared to quickly feel at home there;
- Relevant work experience is not a must, nor is prior medical knowledge, but it can help you master the topic quickly;
- You are willing to move around frequently between Antwerp and Brussels, and from time to often in other cities and towns in Flanders; it goes without saying that we will reimburse your travel expenses;
- You are passionate about working with vulnerable people to combat health inequality.
