You will be part of the Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of LIST, which conducts cross‑disciplinary research to support the transition toward a more sustainable, resilient, and healthy society. SUSTAIN combines expertise in environmental sciences, circular economy, risk and safety assessment, and sustainable innovation to address complex challenges related to human and environmental health, climate change, and resource efficiency, developing knowledge, methods, and transferable software for the simulation and comprehensive sustainability assessment of socio-economic systems. Its purpose is to foster sustainable eco-innovation, through products and technologies, as well as support sustainability-oriented policy implementation and behavioural change to promote decarbonisation transitions. Within the SUSTAIN Unit, you will join the Industrial Ecology (IE) research group. The group consists of 14 researchers with a broad range of expertise and diverse cultural backgrounds, and united by the common purpose of supporting the sustainability transition. The IE Group conducts research at the intersection between life cycle assessment (LCA), other quantitative industrial ecology approaches (material flow analysis, input output analysis, etc.), and data-driven methods (optimisation, generative AI, agent-based modelling, machine learning). Our work provides decision support for policy makers, industry stakeholders, and researchers by delivering actionable insights into resource use efficiency, circularity, and environmental impacts across scales—from products and cities to global supply chains. By joining us you will contribute to this exciting endeavour. You will work on life cycle assessment in various contexts, spanning from industrial processes to territorial analyses and national and international policies. In addition, you will contribute to the assessment of impacts on ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services, integrating biodiversity and natural capital considerations into sustainability assessment frameworks. This work will support the development and application of methods that link life cycle thinking with ecosystem services evaluation to better inform decision‑making in environmental management and policy. You will be mainly in charge of: Conducting research and contribute to the development of LCA modelling pipelines to evaluate the environmental impacts of products, technologies, and systems across their life cycles. Contributing to the development and application of methods that integrate ecosystem services and biodiversity considerations into environmental sustainability assessments. Applying and further developing quantitative tools from industrial ecology (e.g., LCA, material flow analysis, hybrid approaches) to support sustainability transitions at product, sectoral, territorial, and policy levels. Analysing complex environmental datasets and translating results into actionable insights for research, policy, and industry stakeholders. You will join the Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and will actively contribute to the WeForming and EnerTEF project, funded by the Horizon Europe, in collaboration with research institutes and Industrial partners around Europe. WeForming and EnerTEF focus on the use of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) in smart grids. In the case of WeForming, this includes the integration of energy storage systems together with smart electric vehicle chargers, while EnerTEF focuses on establishing Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) for the energy sector. Specifically, this project leverages industrial communication networks, distributed controllers, AI models, and state-of-the-art IBR-based infrastructure to optimize EV charging and energy systems. Education • A PhD's or MSc degree in electrical engineering, automation, computer science, or a related discipline, with proven expertise in the operation and control of smart grids. Experience and skills • Solid hands-on experience in designing and deploying automation and control architectures involving IBRs, distributed controllers, communication networks, SCADA, and cloud-based platforms. • Experience in projects using cloud-based platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP), containerized services (Docker, Kubernetes), and middleware brokers (MQTT, OPC-UA, AMQP) to interact with distributed controllers. • Practical knowledge of distributed control systems and real-time operation of smart and active distribution grids, including IBRs for battery storage, PV, and hybrid DERs. • Familiarity with grid-forming control principles, converter modelling and deployment of real-time distributed responses to improve grid conditions. • Experience with RT-HIL platforms (e.g. OPAL-RT, Typhoon), including closed-loop interaction with real hardware and field devices. • Strong programming skills in Python, C/C++, and experience with data-centric control and monitoring architectures. • Experience working in interdisciplinary RDI environments and contributing to experimental demonstrators (lab and field). • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills suited for both technical and collaborative work. This is a PhD project to investigate the role of evaporation during small rainfall events on forest function. Low-volume water pathways in forests such as direct absorption of water and evaporation from the forest floor may become greater in importance during drought. This research will focus on innovative measurements of these processes, using isotopic tracers, micrometeorological monitoring, and emerging techniques to estimate fluxes in trees and soil. Instrumented field sites in Luxembourg, Switzerland, and the Netherlands will allow inter-site comparisons. This position is within the Catchment and Ecohydrology Group, which is part of the Environmental Sensing and Modelling Unit at LIST. Collaborating groups are the Water Systems Monitoring & Modelling group at Delft University of Technology and the Institute of Environmental Engineering and WaldLab Zürich at ETH Zürich.
