Doctoral student in Control-oriented system identification
Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB
Sweden
We are looking for a Doctoral student to become part of our team in the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Join our innovative team and contribute to exciting research in data-driven control in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
About us
At the department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, Systems and Control, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. We work with sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, such as energy efficiency and electrification in areas ranging from transport and production systems to communication solutions and biomedical engineering.
You will join a group within the Automatic Control unit of the Systems and Control division focusing on data-driven control methodologies.
About the research project
Model-based control is arguably the prime framework to perform certifiably-safe regulation of dynamical systems. However, when dynamics are complex, nonlinear and partially unknown, such a model is typically obtained from observations by performing system identification. Typical identification algorithms are agnostic of the downstream task they will be deployed on, and this may lead to a suboptimal control performance. In this project, we will investigate control-oriented biases and their impact on system identification and control, addressing key issues such as persistence of excitation, safe exploration, input design, and connections with direct control methods.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Engineering or Applied Mathematics, preferably with a major in automatic control or similar
*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• Experience in system identification and machine learning is a merit.
What you will do
• Perform research, developing your own scientific concepts and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing
• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Electrical Engineering
• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
• As a WASP student you will also be part of a graduate school network across leading Swedish universities, offering specialized courses for AI, extra training, study visits and conferences broadening your skills.
Contract terms
• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
What we offer
• As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
• Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.
Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence.

Doctoral student in Kernel-based multi-task learning
Chalmers Tekniska Högskola AB

About the research project
In many scenarios (arising, e.g., in biomedical systems), performing system identification is challenging due to the system complexity and the limited data-set size; however, often data coming from related, similar scenarios might be available. In view of this, the goal of this project is to advance the theory and practice of multi-task learning. The problem will be framed in the context of kernel-based methods for identification, aiming for a principled representation of task-relatedness; derivation of uncertainty bounds; and a rigorous analysis of learning rates.
