Job description

This PhD position is funded by the Research Council of Norway through the project EEIwarm, which seeks to better understand the acceleration in global warming in recent years, and particularly the surge in warming from 2023 – 2025. Specifi-cally, the project will investigate the physical underpinnings of the heat surge and its persistence, with particular emphasis on Earth’s energy imbalance (EEI) and ocean heat content (OHC), in order to close an existing knowledge gap and im-prove near-term predictions. Other partners in the project are University of Ber-gen and Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC, project leaders), and researchers from ETH-Zürich in Switzerland are international collab-orators.

The primary research tool in the project is the Norwegian Earth System Model, vesion 3 (NorESM3), and a central satellite dataset for EEI is from the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES). The specific tasks intended for the PhD fellow are to (i) Analyze observational datasets to quantify cloud and radia-tive flux variations associated with the rapid warming of 2023 - 2025, (ii) Apply atmosphere-only NorESM3 simulations to explore drivers of the rapid warming (iii) Diagnose atmosphere-only and coupled NorESM3 simulations to link cloud processes and EEI anomalies to the rapid warming.

Required qualifications:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Meteorology or a related field
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and ideally also in a Scandinavian language
• Relevant experience in analyzing output from, and ideally also running, weather and/or climate models
• Strong programming skills and experience working with large (simuated or observed) data sets

Desired qualifications:

• Familiarity with NorESM and/or CERES data

About the position

A permanent position as Associate Professor in theoretical or computational quantum science and technology is available at the Department of Physics, under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Department of Physics have a strategic goal of strengthening research and educational activities in quantum science and -technology (QST). The successful applicant is expected to take a leading role in realizing this vision.

QST activities in the department are growing and presently span both experimental and theoretical research, as well as quantum physics education research. On the experimental side, our main focus is on semiconductor materials for quantum sensing, and fundamental studies of quantum material properties. Theoretical activities include research on quantum information theory, quantum algorithms, quantum engineering, many-body theories for quantum technologies, quantum machine learning, and fundamental quantum science. There are strong ties to related activities in the Department of Mathematics and at the Hylleraas Center for quantum chemistry. 

Two newly established research centers in quantum technology, the Centre for Defects in Semiconductors for Quantum Sensing (link) and the Centre for Quantum Computing and Applications (link), serve as important catalysts for increasing collaboration across departments and with research institutes and industry. There is also growing national, Nordic, and international collaboration in both quantum research and education.

This position is focused on strengthening research and education within theoretical and/or computational QST in the department. 

Job description/ main tasks 

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the department’s strategic effort in quantum science and -technology, with particular focus on theoretical and computational approaches. Relevant research background includes, but is not limited to, quantum algorithms, quantum optimization, quantum simulation, quantum engineering, theoretical and computational many-body physics, quantum sensing, quantum materials, and fundamental aspects of quantum science relevant to quantum technology. 

The candidate’s expertise should align with and complement our existing research strengths, with the potential to deepen interaction across research sections and departments within the faculty. It is an advantage if the candidate’s research activities have relevance to strategic initiatives at UiO.

The successful candidate is expected to establish and lead an outstanding independent research program, participate in and coordinate collaborative networks and projects, supervise students and post-doctoral researchers, actively pursue national and international research funding, contribute to teaching at all levels within the Department, and promote productive interaction between academia and society.

The appointed person is expected to play an important role in strengthening the new Bachelor’s program in quantum technology, and the new Master’s program in quantum science and -technology. What skills are important in this role?

Required qualifications:

• The successful applicant must have completed a Master’s degree in physics and a PhD in physics or a related field central for the position.
• Postdoctoral experience.
• Documented high quality research in a relevant field, demonstrating ability for independent and significant scientific production after the PhD. The main emphasis will be on the candidate’s scientific production from the last five years.
• Experience with attracting external research funding and leading scientific research projects
• Experience with scientific programming and the use of numerical methods in research and education

If the successful candidate does not have sufficient mastery of a Scandinavian language, B2 level, the candidate will be required to learn sufficient Norwegian within three years of employment.

• Potential to align with existing strategic initiatives in QST and to promote collaboration between sections and departments.
• Ability to teach courses on quantum computing, computational physics, many-body physics, quantum machine learning or similar topics, in addition to basic physics courses.

• Motivation for development and redesign of courses and teaching methods, and motivation to take part in developing and improving study programs.
• Experience with communicating university level research and education to a wider (non-scientific) audience.

Job description

A position as a PhD Research Fellow (SKO 1017) is available as part of the project Truth, Information, Democracy and Law - Department of Private Law (TIDAL) funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and Norid AS.

 The fellow will be responsible for their own PhD research and work closely with the TIDAL team at the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law, Department of Private Law, UiO (NRCCL)

The project runs from April 2026 until March 2030. In addition to researchers at the NRCCL, the project team includes researchers at Queen Mary University of London, University of Bergen, University of Tromsø, Lund University, Bond University, BI Norwegian Business School, and Boston University. At the NRCCL, the core project team comprises four people, including the PhD Research fellow. The project is led by Professor Lee A. Bygrave.

The appointment period is for three years dedicated to research training, or four years with career-enhancing work making up 25% of the total workload. 

A four-year fellowship requires that the appointee can contribute to the Faculty of Law's current teaching needs.

More about the position

The TIDAL project concerns the legal preconditions for a well-functioning democracy in an age marked by increasing generation and dissemination of disinformation, misinformation, and other forms of information disorder (ID). Drawing upon cross-disciplinary insights and approaches, including a policy field study of stakeholder viewpoints in Norway and the United Kingdom, the project tackles the fundamental question of whether the law needs to be reformed in order to tackle ID more effectively and, if yes, what avenue(s) of reform would be most sensible. It does so in light of the vexing problem that measures to combat ID in the name of securing or promoting democracy can end up undermining democracyʼs bedrock by tightening various freedoms and accountability frameworks that help buttress democracy and the rule of law. 

The TIDAL project not only examines how best to overcome the latter problem, but elucidates a range of other related matters. These include: the effects of recent legal initiatives by the European Union (EU) to curb ID; the interaction of hard law and soft law codes in this regulatory domain; and current geopolitical tensions at the global level over appropriate legal-regulatory strategies for tackling ID. 

At a more fundamental jurisprudential level, the project interrogates the relationship between law and the promotion of truth, analysing the borderlines between when law penalizes the dissemination of lies, “untruths” and other false or misleading information and when it abstains from doing so, along with the rationale(s) for either course of action.

As part of elucidating the relationship of ID and the law with a view to identifying optimal regulatory strategies for reducing the deleterious effects of ID, the project pursues five main sub-objectives:

(1) to map the non-legal structural factors causing ID, drawing upon scholarship in the social sciences and information sciences;

(2) to develop an holistic understanding of ID that bridges insights from the social sciences and information sciences with insights from legal-regulatory scholarship;

(3) to assess how the law, in light of these insights, currently facilitates and impedes ID;

(4) to evaluate what role law should play to remedy ID in the future and to develop and assess new norms, legal concepts, and regulatory frameworks, innovating legal treatment of ID;

(5) to assess the legal innovations within the wider geopolitical situation which Norway finds herself in, with a view to minimizing jurisdictional “overreach”.

The PhD Research Fellow is expected to work closely with TIDAL team members in pursuing the above-listed objectives. The PhD Research Fellow is also expected to engage in international dissemination activities and collaborate with key scholars in the field, outside the project group. Part of these activities will involve participation in the collection, coding, and analysis of data from policy field studies, writing research articles and other publications (e.g. book chapters, blogposts), participating in the ongoing reporting from the project, and assisting the project leader in the daily operation of the project.

Qualification requirements

• Applicants must hold a Norwegian five-year Master’s degree in Law, or an equivalent qualification with a strong legal component.
• Normally, the applicant should have grades that place them in the top tier. This requirement also applies to the master’s thesis.
• The working language of the TIDAL project is English, and applicants should have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken. Additionally, a strong command of Norwegian, alternatively Danish or Swedish, necessary for studying Norwegian policy discourse, is desirable.

• Systemingeniør for sentralutstyr og interlocking innen fagområdet signal og CBTC
• Være en av flere tekniske spesialister innen det nye CBTC-systemet
• Sikre at anleggene tilfredsstiller gjeldende lover, forskrifter, teknisk regelverk og prosedyrer, og dekker T-banens driftsbehov på kort og lang sikt
• Bistå organisasjonen med tekniske vurderinger, rapporter og evalueringer på tvers av fagmiljøer
• Bidra til forvaltning og videreutvikling av Sporveiens OT-systemer i tråd med beste praksis, samt støtte drift av øvrige applikasjoner og fagsystemer
• Bidra i arbeidet med cyber security for industrielle og operasjonelle systemer, i tråd med relevante standarder og beste praksis
• Bidra til oppfølging og videreutvikling av driftsoppgaver og prosesser
• Utarbeide og vedlikeholde teknisk dokumentasjon, prosedyrer og ettersynsinstrukser
• Følge opp vedlikehold, garantibefaringer og garantisaker for anlegg
• Delta som fagressurs i prosjekter og sikre overgang til drift
• Erfaringsoverføring og kompetansedeling med interne ressurser
• Representere Sporveien i møter og dialog med eksterne partnere og leverandører

Stillingen inngår i staben til Vedlikeholdssjef hos Infrastruktur T-bane og rapporterer til Avdelingsleder Signal. Arbeidssted vil være Etterstad og Tøyen.

Nordkapp videregående skole
Nordkapp videregående skole ligger sentralt i Honningsvåg - byen ved Nordkapp.

Nordkapp videregående skole har tilbud innen naturbruk, fiske og fangst, akvakultur, restaurant- og matfag, konditorfaget, elektrofag, maritime fag samt studiespesialisering. Skolen har i tillegg ansvaret for distanseundervisning til 8 kystkommuner – Veksling LOSA. I tillegg har skolen ansvaret for Nettskolen Finnmark som er under stadig utvikling. Gjennom skolens kursavdeling arrangeres mange utadrettede kurs og utdanningstilbud for skolens elever, private og næringslivet. Det innebærer å sammenstille og vurdere budsjettforslag, vurdere løpende saker til beslutning i regjeringen og tidvis større utredningsarbeid for eksempel utarbeide tekst til stortingsmeldinger eller gjennomføre områdegjennomganger. 

Avdelingen arbeider ofte med korte tidsfrister og mange saker samtidig. Du må kunne bruke din fagbakgrunn til raskt å sette deg inn i, vurdere og presentere komplekse saker klart og kortfattet. Du må kunne jobbe selvstendig og ta ansvar for framdrift i sakene på ditt ansvarsområde, samtidig vil du få nødvendig lederoppfølging og samarbeide tett med dyktige kollegaer. Du vil tidlig få være med på å legge fram faglige råd for politisk ledelse.

Utdanning, erfaring og egenskaper

Faglige kvalifikasjoner:

• Høyere utdanning som siviløkonom, samfunnsøkonom eller annen samfunnsvitenskapelig utdanning på mastergradsnivå med gode karakterer
• God samfunnsøkonomisk forståelse
• Analytisk tenkning, nøyaktighet og evne til å sette seg raskt inn i kompliserte problemstillinger
• Interesse for samfunnsspørsmål
• God evne til å framstille og argumentere for faglige vurderinger både muntlig og skriftlig

Til stilling som rådgiver stilles det krav om minst 2 års relevant arbeidserfaring, og for seniorrådgiver stilles det krav om minst 5 års relevant arbeidserfaring. F.eks. fra statlig budsjettarbeid, økonomisk analyse eller utredningsarbeid. Kjennskap til offentlig forvaltning vil være en fordel. 

Vi søker både kandidater som kan starte i januar 2027 og etter sommeren 2027. Studenter som fullfører master innen sommeren 2027, kan søke på stillingen som førstekonsulent.

Annen informasjon

Lønn: kr 626 000 - kr 850 000 og betalt overtid. For særlig godt kvalifiserte kandidater kan høyere lønn vurderes.

Fra lønnen trekkes 2 pst. innskudd til Statens pensjonskasse.
