About the position

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MTP) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has five vacancies for PhD candidates within different disciplines of Systems Engineering/New Product Development, funded through the Centre for Research-based Innovation, SFI-CELECT (Research Centre for Effective Engineering and Learning in Complex Systems).

The positions are 3-year doctoral research fellowships starting in 2026. The PhD candidates will be embedded in the research activities of SFI-CELECT and will work closely with NTNU, University of Sout-Eastern Norway (USN), University of Agder (UiA), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and leading industrial partners in the product manufacturing, defence and aerospace, and maritime sectors.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

About SFI CELECT—Centre for Effective Engineering and Learning in Complex Systems

SFI-CELECT is a new Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI), starting 2026, funded by the Research Council of Norway and industrial partners and led by the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) in close collaboration  with NTNU and UiA, and a broad consortium of leading companies across industrial sectors. Through research on new methodologies for effective engineering and learning in complex systems, we aim to accelerate innovation and value creation in industry by developing better methods and smarter tools to do more with less—and faster. SFI-CELECT runs from 2026 to 2033 and is Norway’s most ambitious long-term research initiatives within innovation in complex systems.

The primary objective of SFI-CELECT is to leap the innovation and product realization capabilities in some of Norway’s leading industries by enhancing how new products are developed and managed. Operating within an integrated academic-industry ecosystem, SFI-CELECT will generate research-based methodologies, methods and tools for effective and efficient product innovation and realization, embracing the complexity and dynamics in today’s business environments where digitalization and AI tools play an increasingly important role.

A key aim of CELECT is to establish an integrated academic-industry learning and educational ecosystem, where PhDs and researchers work together across disciplines to solve complex problems of high industrial importance using industry-as-a-laboratory as the research context.

Education and competence building are central pillars of CELECT. The centre will educate more than 30 PhD and postdoctoral researchers and over 120 MSc students, strengthening Norway’s international position in new product innovation. Work location for the five positions posted herein is NTNU – Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Trondheim, Norway.

PhD position 1: Human–AI Decision‑Support for Efficient Value Chains of Complex Products

The PhD will utilize and develop human‑centric AI decision-support tools for analyzing and designing efficient and sustainable value streams across various complex industrial supply chains. The main focus is integrating product and process requirements/specifications, logistics resilience, and sustainability into a unified multidimensional modelling framework, with specific emphasis on synergies between defense, manufacturing, maritime and public sectors. The candidate will build and verify a digital decision-support platform, integrating simulation, optimization, and ethical AI for joint human–AI evaluation of supply chain and lifecycle trade-offs (e.g., defense supply resilience, maritime logistics sustainability, manufacturing flexibility, public procurement ethics).

The candidate will work in close collaboration with industrial partners and needs to be responsible for reporting progress and delivering outputs to the CELECT centre.

PhD position 2: Next generation knowledge management: Digital tools and organizational learning as complementary capabilities for effective product development

This PhD will research how new, enabling digital tools and digital threads can be effectively integrated into work flows in new product development (NPD) to provide a robust basis for organizational learning. The possibilities to acquire knowledge from inside and outside the organization for the design and development of new products have increased dramatically in recent years. Despite this shift, however, long-time established NPD methods that form the basis for company practices have virtually remained unchanged with their focus on building capabilities for inside knowledge transformation. In response, this PhD will research how organizations can sustain competitive advantage by leveraging organizational learning in today’s digital NPD context, where project learning increasingly requires openness and rapid knowledge acquisition, often from outside the organization. Relevant research questions are: What are (the characteristic of) ‘organizational learning’ in today’s digital era? How can it be reinforced? How can organizations effectively convert and manage knowledge acquired for decision support across NPD projects into improved capabilities for executing future projects and sustained competitive advantage?

PhD position 3: Knowledge-Based Development (KBD) for Instant Decision Support in digitally supported NPD processes

The aim of this PhD is to develop effective knowledge-based strategies for improved decision support in NPD processes. The PhD will develop, test and verify the next generation platform for improved decision support in NPD, bridging theory, practices, processes, people and digital tools, and equipping companies with the absorptive capability necessary to effectively navigate the increasing product-service lifecycle responsibility and complexity in various company-business contexts.

This position will complement PhD position 2 above, which focuses more on the organizational learning dimension, by primarily focusing on how NPD teams efficiently can acquire information and knowledge to support instant decision making in projects. Some main research questions: What are the main components of a knowledge-based development framework (where digital tools play an increasingly important role)? How can organizations enable interoperability between people, processes and IT/AI tools within such a framework? How do contextual factors play a role for implementation of such a framework? How can we balance between standardized core components and localized adaptions in companies operating globally?

PhD position 4: Strategies for leveraging cross-functional knowledge flows in digitally supported NPD processes

Since the outcome of NPD processes is not only the physical artifact but also the creation, recombination and transfer of knowledge, cross-functional knowledge flows are central to NPD effectiveness (quality of decisions and solutions) and efficiency (speed and ‘first-time-right’). This PhD will research how such cross functional knowledge flows can be enabled and leveraged in contemporary NPD settings where collaboration is increasingly mediated by shared digital tools rather than co-located interaction. Accordingly, s/he will investigate how organizations can make NPD work processes more productive by better understanding where digital tools has their limitations and which countermeasures that can be established to improve interactions across functional boundaries to make work flows more tangible and transparent with regards to identifying waste sources and lack of value.

PhD position 5: Generative AI for Systematic Concept and Architecture Exploration in Early-stage Product- and System Design

Generative AI is emerging as a powerful enabler for systematic concept and architecture exploration in early-stage product design, where the ability to rapidly explore and structure large design spaces is critical. By supporting the formalization of requirements, the generation of diverse solution concepts, and the synthesis of alternative system architectures, generative AI has the potential to augment human designers’ capacity to reason across functional boundaries and make informed trade-offs early in development. However, current applications remain largely ad-hoc, with limited integration into structured design processes and weak support for verification, traceability, and decision-making.

This PhD will investigate how generative AI can be methodically embedded as tools/methodologies into early-stage product and system design workflows to improve the breadth, quality, and transparency of concept and architecture exploration, while accounting for the limitations of digitally mediated design work.

The candidate will plan and conduct empirical studies and case-based research with research and industry partners, including mapping current practice, introducing method elements in real design projects, and evaluating effects on design quality, development speed, traceability, and robustness of decisions.

The Department of Electric Energy (IEL) at NTNU is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a full-time (100%) PhD position for 3 years as part of the project “KreDiT - Towards advanced monitoring and mitigation of stability issues in grids dominated by power electronic converters”. You will join the research group Power System Operation and Analysis (PSOA) at IEL, where we foster an open, inclusive, and collaborative working environment.

Our working environment is characterized by a friendly, supportive atmosphere, with regular gatherings such as research group professional meetings, weekly colloquia, shared lunches, and “Friday coffee” sessions to wrap up the week. These formal and informal occasions provide opportunities to exchange ideas, celebrate milestones, and strengthen connections. PhD candidates also arrange social activities, open to everyone who wishes to join, creating a welcoming and inclusive community.

Your immediate Line Manager will be the Head of Department.

About the project

Background of the position

The transition to a more sustainable energy system is fundamentally changing power grids, namely due to the introduction of an unprecedented level of power electronic converters (PECs). Although this technology is a key enabler of the energy transition, it also introduces complex stability challenges, many of which are not yet fully understood or addressed by conventional methods.

Existing commercial simulation tools often fail to predict stability issues due to model inaccuracies and the uncharacterized dynamics of PECs, which are typically proprietary and not fully disclosed by manufacturers. Efforts to characterize PECs through impedance measurements have led to the well-established Impedance-Based Stability Criterion (IBSC), however they face limitations when applied to large-scale systems with multiple PECs, and thus restricting the extension of the stability criteria in complex interconnected systems.

At the same time, the ongoing transition to digital substations (DiSts) presents new opportunities for enhancing stability analysis through advanced measurement infrastructure. Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), equipped with high-speed communication links and GPS synchronization, enable real-time data analysis and collection with event-triggered storage, making them valuable tools for analyzing transient power system behavior. These capabilities could be leveraged to improve PEC characterization and system-level stability assessments, yet their application in this context has not been widely explored.

However, the IBSC method still falls within the small-signal stability analysis, implying that results are only valid under small perturbations. Thus, a natural question is how to use large-signal stability methods (e.g.: Lyapunov/passivity, Popov Criteria, etc.) in an integrated fashion; e.g.: together with system-wide PEC characterization techniques enabled by DiSts, with the objective to complement the small-signal results.

About the project

The PhD falls within the Research Council of Norway (NFR) Collaborative and Knowledge-building Project (KSP) called “KreDiT - Towards advanced monitoring and mitigation of stability issues in grids dominated by power electronic converters.”

KreDiT aims to develop new methods and tools to effectively monitor and address converter-driven stability and power quality issues arising from the higher reliance on power electronic converters due to the growing share of solar and wind power [...]. A strong focus of the KreDiT project is given to data-driven approaches to enable preventive and mitigating solutions for system operators.

SINTEF Energy Research is the project coordinator for this KSP project and will be managed by Dr. Tor Inge Reigstad. Therefore, the PhD candidate will also benefit from strong scientific collaboration with SINTEF researchers associated with KreDiT, namely Dr. Raymundo Torres-Olguin and Dr. Santiago Sanchez-Acevedo.

The main supervisor will be Associate Professor Gilbert Joseph Bergna Diaz (IEL), with Associate Professor Sjur Føyen (IEL) as co-supervisor.

Duties of the position

The main objective of the PhD is to investigate (linear and/or nonlinear) system-wide stability assessments methodologies for modern power grids dominated by inverter-based resources in the context of advanced measurement infrastructure enabled by the appearance of digital substations.

This may include, for example:

  • An investigation into their applicability and associated challenges
  • Further development of the stability assessment to increase its applicability

About the project

FME RenewHydro

FME stands for Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research, and FME RenewHydro is a new research center for environmentally friendly energy, developing hydropower to be more flexible and contributing to more sustainable renewable energy. With increased cooperation and new knowledge in technology, markets, environment and society, the research center RenewHydro will work to reach national energy, climate and nature targets.

In RenewHydro, researchers in the fields of technology, biology, economics, society and climate will collaborate with experts from the hydropower industry and public administration to solve key challenges in the energy field, develop solutions for a low-emission society and strengthen the business community's ability to innovate.

In addition to technology for the hydropower plants themselves, the researchers will look at, among other things, security of supply, how climate effects change hydropower, how the power can and will develop, and how hydropower can take into account the environment in rivers and reservoirs in the form of nature-based solutions.

We face major challenges in the future. Climate change will affect the whole society, including hydropower and nature. In RenewHydro, we will therefore also focus on the major connections with biological diversity, sustainability and land use.

NTNU leads the center and the main research partners are the Norwegian School of Business NHH, the Norwegian Institute for Natural Research - NINA and SINTEF Energi. Centre duration is from 2025 till end of 2032. See here for more information.

About the project

Hydropower machines in Norway have traditionally been designed and operated as base load suppliers. New operating schemes in different types of power markets make the loading of the machines different from the past. The operation is more intermittent and closer to design capabilities, combined with a goal to reduce maintenance and operational costs.

Thus, the early, precise, and cost-effective detection of faults becomes more important. The research is in part a continuation of ongoing research on fault detection and identification using electromagnetic signatures. Through previous research efforts, several mechanical and electrical failures in the rotor have been detected. A detector system with signal processing software is under development and testing. The research is at the international forefront.

In the continued research effort, other mechanical and electrical faults are targeted. This includes stator faults such as stator winding short circuits. The PhD Candidate is expected to utilize FEM numerical models, combined with signal processing and pattern recognition, to identify targeted faults. The research extensively uses laboratory and field (power station) testing.

As mentioned above, you will be a part of the research group Electrical Machines and Electromagnetics (EME) at IEL, where you are expected to take an active role in the group and participate in activities.

The main supervisor will be Professor Arne Nysveen (IEL). Co-supervisor will be Dr. Hossein Ehya (AIMSES).

Duties of the position

  • Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above.
  • Literature review on advanced low-cost sensor technologies applicable for monitoring the health of stator winding, stator core, rotor, and rotor windings.
  • Modelling and simulation of fault signals and detection using various sensors.
  • Explore different signal processing methods for improved robustness in detection and discrimination of faults.
  • Experimental verification in the laboratory and field (power station).
  • Participate in activities of the research group Electrical Machines and Electromagnetics (EME).
  • Academic publications and dissemination. Researchers in RenewHydro are expected to contribute regularly to internal and external seminars with research partners and sponsors.
  • Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational/research institutions.
  • Complete academic training consisting of coursework corresponding to a minimum of 30 ECTS.

Career-enhancing work, which is in addition to the research project and doctoral education, may be offered to a candidate who demonstrates clear motivation and ability for such work, and if the Department determines there is a need. Examples of career-enhancing work include, but are not limited to, contributing to teaching, laboratory and exercise teaching, supervision, and examination work within the employee's areas of competence.

Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.

Over SAVE Steden & Gemeenten
