About the position
Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? Do you have a background in electrical engineering, operations research, math/physics, or a related field, and are you interested in energy systems and markets? As a PhD candidate with us, you will work toward your doctorate while gaining valuable experience that qualifies you for a future career in higher education and research, both within and beyond academia.
The Department of Electric Energy (IEL) at NTNU is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a full-time (100%) PhD position for 3 years as part of the research center FME NorthWind. You will join the research group Electricity Markets and Energy System Planning (EMESP) at IEL, where we foster an open, inclusive, and collaborative working environment.
Our work environment is defined by a friendly, supportive atmosphere, with regular gatherings such as research group professional meetings, weekly colloquia, shared lunches, and “Friday coffee” sessions to end the week. These formal and informal events offer opportunities to share ideas, celebrate milestones, and build relationships. PhD candidates also organize social activities open to everyone interested, fostering a welcoming and inclusive community.
Your immediate Line Manager will be the Head of Department.
About the project
This PhD is a part of FME NorthWind, a Centre for Environmental-friendly Energy which works to turn wind R&D into a profitable export industry that creates green jobs and respects nature. The research will address the grand science and engineering challenges to realise the full potential of the wind energy sector in a sustainable future.
To facilitate the transition towards a zero-emission European power system, a substantial amount of wind power and other variable renewable energy (VRE) sources is needed. Wind power provides energy at zero marginal cost but is variable and can be hard to predict. Therefore, wind power is exposed to both variations in electricity prices and balancing prices. In the later years, there has been an ongoing development in the European balancing markets towards more standardized products for reserves and balancing. At the same time more countries, including the Nordics, have introduced flow-based market coupling. Fundamental market models are crucial tools to analyse the consequences of these market developments, and to build strategies for minimizing the costs for reserves and balancing services that are needed to accommodate large amounts of VRE.
Based on analytical and state-of-the-art market models, the aim of this Phd is to utilize and develop multi-market models that incorporate electricity spot markets and markets for system services. The models will be used for analyzing the future requirements and costs of system services in low-carbon energy futures. Moreover, it will study how various reserve requirements and balancing activation principles impact electricity prices, power flows and needs for flexibility, as well as the profitability of the individual generators.
The Phd will build upon previous modelling and analysis activities at NTNU and SINTEF, where fundamental multi-market modelling has been a topic of research over many years.
Your main supervisor will be Professor Magnus Korpås, with co-supervisors Professor Arild Helseth (IEL, NTNU) and Senior Researcher Matti Koivisto at the Technical University of Denmark.
