About the position

Are you interested in Applied Artificial Intelligence, Education, and Medicine, and want to engage in research with skilled colleagues who share your interests? Maybe you can become our new colleague? 

You will be affiliated with the PhD program in Technology at the Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences and formally employed at det USN School of business.

The PhD research fellowship is for a fixed term of three years with organized research training and is available from 01.01.2027 (or earlier if possible). 

It is a condition that the person who accepts the position applies for and is granted admission to the doctoral programme in Technology within three months of starting in the position. The doctoral program includes relevant courses corresponding to approximately six months of study (30 ETCS), a thesis based on independent research, active participation in national and international research environments, relevant research dissemination, a trial lecture and public defense of the thesis. Your personnel manager will be Bjørn Hansen, the Head of Department of Business, History and Social Sciences, and your main supervisor will be Associate professor Katarina Mangaroska. The place of work will be at campus Vestfold.

About the doctoral project

The BRAIGED project aims to develop an explainable AI-driven educational diagnostic assistant enabling new research on how AI technologies create novel prerequisites, opportunities and challenges for learning, decision-making, and clinical reasoning in medicine. The project aims to move explainability beyond a purely technical feature and toward an interactive educational process that supports metacognitive reasoning, student agency, and responsible use of AI. The project will generate new knowledge and practical tools for implementing context-appropriate explainable AI solutions in medical education.

A central use case is kidney disease (e.g., CKD) and clinical reasoning using renal scintigraphy imaging alongside tabular and textual clinical data. The project integrates experiential learning models and simulation-based learning scenarios, grounded in the paradoxical inquiry framework, to recognize and embrace contradictions inherent in AI-driven medical training.

During the doctoral project, we expect you to

• Complete the doctoral program and obtain the doctoral degree within the employment period
• Conduct high-quality research within the framework of the BRAIGED project
• Develop a theoretically grounded and methodologically rigorous PhD project related to responsible, explainable and governable AI in healthcare and medical education
• Contribute to scholarly publications in high-quality international journals and conferences
• Participate actively in the research group’s activities, including seminars, workshops, project meetings and collaborative research discussions
• Participate in relevant courses offered through the doctoral program
• Contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, students and other project partners involved in BRAIGED
• Contribute to data collection and analysis (qualitative and quantitative): interviews, focus groups, surveys, usability studies and learning-scenario data
• Develop and evaluate machine learning pipelines (including preprocessing, segmentation/feature extraction, model training and validation)
• Design and test explainability methods 
• Support the co-design and iterative prototyping of AI-driven educational diagnostic assistant tool 
• Be prepared for changes in your work tasks after appointment

Qualifications

To be employed as a PhD candidate it is required that you have: 

• Master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) (or equivalent qualifications) within Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Machine Learning; Biomedical Engineering, Medical Informatics; or a closely related discipline 
• Documented knowledge of relevant methodologies, both quantitative and/or qualitative, at master’s level
• Weighted average grade of B or higher on the master’s degree and thesis. The master’s degree must have been obtained by the application deadline for the position
• Excellent written and oral English language skills (See “Requirements for proficiency in English)
• Meet the formal requirements for admission to USN’s doctoral programmes and Faculty for Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime’s doctoral programme in Technology no later than three months after starting in the position

Project description

About the position

We invite applications for a PhD position in sea-ice dynamics and numerical modelling, funded through Arctic Ocean 2050 — Norway’s national, decade-long flagship program for Arctic Ocean research. The PhD project will advance discrete element modelling (DEM) approaches for sea ice, with a focus on ridging processes and wave–ice interaction in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), while also addressing computational efficiency and scalability.

The research will primarily build on and extend the SAMS (Simulation of Arctic Marine Systems) framework, using it as a platform for developing new sea-ice physics and modelling strategies relevant for next-generation Arctic prediction, monitoring, and decision-support systems.

The successful candidate will join a strong interdisciplinary research environment, gain access to advanced modelling tools and national computing infrastructure, and contribute to a high-impact research programme with strong relevance for Arctic decision support.

About the project

Rapid Arctic warming is driving profound changes in sea-ice extent, thickness, and mechanical behavior, with wide-ranging implications for climate feedbacks, ecosystems, infrastructure, navigation, and geopolitics. Despite major advances, large-scale continuum sea-ice models still rely on simplified parameterizations to represent critical sub-grid physical processes such as ridging, floe interaction, jamming, and wave-induced breakup.

Discrete Element Models (DEMs) offer a powerful complementary framework by explicitly resolving ice floes and their mechanical interactions. By allowing deformation, fracture, and redistribution processes to emerge naturally from contact mechanics, DEMs provide a physically grounded basis for improving our understanding of sea-ice dynamics and informing more realistic parameterizations in continuum models.

The overarching ambition of this PhD study is to advance DEM-based sea-ice physics in a way that bridges floe-scale mechanics, continuum sea-ice model parameterization, and operational decision support.

• Develop physically consistent representations of ice ridging within a DEM framework, enabling simulation of ice compression, mass redistribution, and ridge keel formation.
• Incorporate wave–ice interaction processes, with emphasis on wave-induced floe motion, breakup, and rearrangement in the Marginal Ice Zone.
• Derive emergent sea-ice properties (e.g. effective strength, deformation rates, floe-size distributions) and translate these into improved parameterizations for continuum sea-ice models used in climate and forecasting systems.
• Improve computational efficiency and scalability of DEM-based simulations through algorithmic optimization, hierarchical or multi-resolution approaches, and/or reduced-order methods.
• Apply the developed modelling framework to assess mechanical ice hazards relevant for navigation, infrastructure, and Arctic observing systems.

This PhD position is an integral contribution to Arctic Ocean 2050, supporting the program’s ambition to deliver scientifically robust, scalable modelling tools for a rapidly changing Arctic Ocean.

The project is particularly aligned with Research Theme 5 (RT5: Advances in Observing and Modelling), where it contributes to the development of a hierarchical, physics-based modelling framework that links global and regional continuum models with high-resolution, process-resolving simulations. By advancing SAMS as a discrete element modelling platform, the project will provide physically grounded data to improve continuum sea-ice parameterizations, support machine-learning-based model emulators, and enhance the realism of Arctic digital twins.

In addition, the project supports RT2 (The Changing Arctic Ocean) by improving representation of sea-ice deformation, ridging, and MIZ dynamics; RT4 (Abrupt and Extreme Events) by enabling mechanistic studies of storm-driven breakup and nonlinear ice responses; and RT3 (Human Impact and Sustainable Use) by delivering tools for ice-related risk assessment relevant to shipping, offshore infrastructure, and monitoring operations.

Duties of the position

• Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate

Required selection criteria

• You must have a relevant Master's degree in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, geophysics, oceanography,  or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you maybe considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme 
• Good oral and written presentation skills in English
• Experience with scientific programming

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme through out the period of employment.

As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.

For the necessary professional and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

About the position

The Norwegian Center on AI for Decisions (aiD) has vacancy for a PhD fellowship in Predictive AI-Based Maintenance and Optimization of Building Energy Management Systems. aiD is one of the new Norwegian AI research initiatives, funded by the Research Council of Norway and industry partners. It consists of 13 research partners and more than 60 partners from industry and public sector led by NTNU and SINTEF. All open positions will be cross-linked on the aiD website aid-center.no 

About the Position

Are you passionate about artificial intelligence, digital twins, and energy management systems in buildings? We are offering a fully funded, three-year PhD position to develop a cutting-edge AI decision-support tool for predictive maintenance and optimization of building energy management systems and technologies (i.e., Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning - HVAC). Partnering with Statsbygg, the Norwegian Government’s Building Agency, your research will be deployed across a massive portfolio of public buildings. Moving beyond outdated calendar-based maintenance schedules, your mission is to solve a critical economic and environmental timing problem: knowing exactly when it becomes cost-optimal to intervene in degrading or overloaded systems. You will overcome the scarcity of real-world fault data by combining Simulation-Based Inference (SBI) and Building Performance Simulation (BPS). By integrating historical facility management (FDVU) records with live building sensor data, you will train AI models to recognize abnormal performance patterns, quantify quality-adjusted service life, and autonomously recommend whether a system needs maintenance, recalibration, or a capacity upgrade. 

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

This position is hosted at the aiD Center, a premier research hub dedicated to advancing the role of artificial intelligence in complex decision-making processes. Hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and SINTEF aiD bridges technological, organizational, and human-centric gaps to foster a society where AI-driven value creation is safe and ethical. As an aiD-PhD candidate, you will collaborate closely with academic experts and industry leaders ensuring your research translates directly into portfolio-scale impact for the future of national real estate. Duties of the position

• Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate

Required selection criteria

• You must have a relevant master’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical power engineering or a related field. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level
• You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
• You must meet the requirements for admission to the Doctoral Programme - PhD - Faculty of Engineering Science - NTNU
• Good written and oral communication skills in English

• Machine Learning Expertise: A robust foundation in probabilistic modeling, Bayesian inference, deep learning, and/or anomaly detection
• Modeling & Simulation Experience: Familiarity with Building Performance Simulation (BPS) tools, such as EnergyPlus or IDA ICE
• Building Automation System (BAS) and Building Energy Management (BEM)
• Data Integration Proficiency: Ability to work with complex, heterogeneous data streams
• Domain Knowledge Advantage: Familiarity with building energy systems, HVAC operations, or fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) is considered a strong asset
• Work Experience: Relevant work experience in operation and maintenance of buildings

Salary and conditions

In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,-per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. 

The employment period is 3 years for the doctoral work.

For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme PhD in Engineering (Doctoral Programme) 3 years - Trondheim - NTNU within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.

The position is conditional on external funding.
